National Lampoon plans to produce 12 films over the course of the next three years, and in fact the first three are already in the works, with scheduled releases next year, says Hollywood Reporter. National Lampoon’s Bag Boy, National Lampoon’s Ratko: The Dictator’s Son and National Lampoon’s 301: The Legend of Awesomest Maximus Wallace Leonidas have already been scooped up by Comedy Central, who will get the exclusive TV rights to the films just 12 months after their theatrical release dates, and ahead of the pay TV rights.

All reports indicate AMC will be renewing its freshman scripted series Mad Men for a second season. Tho nothing official from the network as yet, reports are another 13 episodes will be ordered. The series, created by exec producer Matt Weiner, has averaged 1.1 million viewers season to date. The finale of Season #1 is scheduled for October 18.

Logo, part of MTV Networks, acquired the first five seasons of the Showtime drama The L Word from CBS Television Distribution and will begin the series next summer. Airing all 62 episodes, The L Word chronicles a group of lesbian friends living in L.A. through all their romantic, work and family lives.

The Nielsen Company reported advertising spending for the first half of this year was down -0.5% versus the same period last year. The strongest category continues to be internet advertising at +23.2%, with Spot TV Markets 101-210 at +3.2% and Spanish-Language TV up slightly at +0.2%. The broadcast categories that saw a down trend include: Cable TV -0.3%, Spot Radio -1.8%, Network TV -3.8%, Spot TV Markets 1-100 -4.6% and Network Radio -8.5%.

In other news, The Nielsen Company issued a timetable to launch electronic Local People Meters (LPMs) to 38 more markets by 2011, making the total number of markets using LPMs at 56. These 38 markets are now measured by both Set Meters and handwritten diaries. Once all 56 markets are in play with LPMs, approximately 70% of the U.S. households will be measured by People Meters, providing demo numbers to those markets every day of the year, and not just during sweeps. While waiting anxiously at the dentist’s office, people have the opportunity to view California-based Private Dental Network (PDN), Inc the first digital television network created for dental offices with content for the patient. The new network will launch in the top 10 major markets reaching about 200,000 viewers per month. Advertising for PDN is being sold through Peak Advertising in Los Angeles or SeeSaw Networks based in San Francisco.


Bravo started production on a new docu-drama called Manhattan Moms (wt) which follows several rich socialites and their families as they contend with private schools, charity galas, running businesses and running off to the Hamptons to their summer homes. Richochet Television Inc. will produce with Lenid Rolov as Executive Producer.

A new project for NBC called Clash of the Choirs from BBC Worldwide Prods. and scheduled to debut in December. The premise is simple – get five celebrities to go back to their hometowns, form a choir and then compete against each other. Viewers have the ultimate say, voting for the ones they like and don’t like. Winning choir gets to chose a gift to be used and shared by their hometown. NBC has ordered 4 episodes and has scheduled them to air in one week just prior to Christmas.

ABC has given a script commitment to Foobar, about a group of computer geeks all working together at the same software company, from Original Films and Sony Pictures TV. The script was written by Alice Wu, herself a former computer geek working for Microsoft, turned screenwriter.

FX has a new project on the table – Paranoid is about a government agent specializing in surveillance, who discovers he is also under surveillance, reports Variety. The project is being written by Jim Uhls, who also wrote the film Fight Club.

William Blair returns to Cartoon Network as VP/Cartoon Network Ad Sales Promotions and Marketing. He will supervise custom advertising promotions and marketing for the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim and will manage promotions directors in New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Based in New York, William will report to Phyllis Ehrlich, SVP/Cartoon Network Ad Sales Promotions and Marketing.

Discovery Communications named Tom Cosgrove as COO/EVP for Discovery Channel and The Science Channel responsible for the overall strategy of both networks. He reports to Jane Root, President/GM and succeeds Doug Coblens who moved into the position of EVP/Business Strategy and New Media, Discovery Communications. Tom was SVP/GM of The Science Channel and will continue as acting GM until his replacement is found.

Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) elected Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Entertainment, Inc. as Chairman. He begins his two-year term, effective immediately. Nancy Daniels joined Burbank-based Discovery Studios, a new production division of Discovery Communications, Inc., as VP/Development and Production. Right now, she manages programs for TLC, Travel Channel, Planet Green, Discovery Health Channel and more.

John Baird, EVP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing with Scripps Networks announced his plans to retire at the first of the year. He has been with Scripps since 2000. The company says it will name John’s replacement before he departs next February.

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX ranked #1 overall Wednesday night at 3.0/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p the series opener of Kid Nation on CBS won the hour at 3.0/9. Kid Nation also let in the kids demo – 2.3/9 among K6-11. The debut of FOX’s new Back to You at 8p outdrew Kid Nation in the adult 18-49 crowd with a 3.1/10. The season debut of FOX’s ’til Death did a 2.7/8 at 830p. The CW’s premiere of America’s Next Top Model at 2.5/8, and a 4.2/12 among W18-34. At 9p, FOX led with the debut of Kitchen Nightmares at 3.1/8. CW’s Gossip Girl pulled a 1.7/4 ranking 6th in the A18-49 demo, but led in the W18-34 demo, the network’s sweet spot. At 10p, NBC led with the final hour of the finale of Last Comic Standing’s earning a 3.1/9.
