Cynopsis: Kids!
09/16/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 16, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Gary Marsh is upped to President, Disney Channels Worldwide, while also maintaining his title and responsibilities as Chief Creative Officer.  Marsh takes over the reins from Carolina Lightcap who announced her resignation yesterday as President, Disney Channels Worldwide.  Lightcap had re-located to Burbank from Buenos Aries two years ago replacing Rich Ross, who had been promoted to Chairman/Disney Studios.  Marsh, a 15+ year Disney Channels veteran, most recently served as President/Entertainment and Chief Creative Officer, Disney Channels Worldwide.  He now oversees all creative and leadership responsibilities for Disney’s 100+ kid-targeted channels and feeds around the world, available in 169 countries and 35 languages, and includes the Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, and their corresponding websites, and Disney Cinemagic and Hungama brands; the Radio Disney broadcast, website, and satellite radio network and station group; as well as subscription VOD.  Lightcap joined Disney in 2000 and, prior to most recent position she was SVP/Programming and Creative Affairs, Disney Channels Latin America/Disney Media Networks, and CMO, The Walt Disney Company, Latin America.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

That’s a wrap!  Lionsgate completes principal photography on the new live-action feature film The Hunger Games.  Slated for release on March 23, 2012, The Hunger Games is the first in a series of movies based Suzanne Collins bestselling young adult trilogy published by Scholastic.  Directed by Gary Ross, the movie was filmed entirely in North Carolina over the course of 84 days, and stars Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, X-Men First Class), Josh Hutcherson (The Kid Are Alright) and Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song) as the main teen characters Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne.  The movie also features a number of noted adult actors including Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley and Toby Jones.

LICENSING AND MARKETING

9 Story Entertainment completes new license deals with Freeze and ABG Accessories for its animated series Almost Naked Animals for the US market.  Freeze, a unit of Central Mills, picks up the rights to create t-shirts, fashion tops and hoodies (all sizes) for launch in 2012.  ABG takes rights for cold weather accessories, Spring and Summer cut and sewn headwear, and rainwear, which includes umbrellas and slickers, also set to debut in 2012.  Based on books by illustrator Noah Z. Jones, Almost Naked Animals is produced by 9 Story Entertainment.   The kid-targeted comedy series launched on Cartoon Network in June 2011.

Disney’s kid-targeted social network Club Penguin debuts its first iOS game, Puffle Launch ($.99), on the App Store.  For the uninitiated, Puffles are the penguins’ pets in Club Penguin.  In the new Puffle Launch game, which originally debuted as a game within Club Penguin in March 2010 and played by 150,000+ kids daily, players blast Puffles through various challenges in 24 game levels.  Club Penguin reports that Puffles have become so popular in their own right that 20+ million Puffles have been adopted in 2011.

Preschool series Driver Dan’s Story Train expands into the digital world under a license deal with Avanquest Software, a developer of consumer software across multiple platforms. Avanquest Software will use Driver Dan imagery, branding and content to create and publish a Nintendo DS and PC activity collection of 12-15 mini games, which will launch in spring 2012 across the UK and Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.  Driver Dan’s Story Train is produced by 3Line Media in association with twofour54 Abu Dhabi.  A second season of the series is set to launch this fall on CBeebies (UK).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon Australia has named iCarly’s Jennette McCurdy (she plays Sam Puckett) and Nathan Kress (and he plays Freddie Benson) as co-hosts for the 9th annual Australian Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, which will air Friday, October 7, 2011.  With 1+ million votes already logged, Australian kids can still vote for their favorites in a range of categories at www.nickelodeon.com.au/kca until September 25, 2011. And yes  we can expect significant slime.

Season two of Pukeko Pictures preschool series the WotWots will premiere in the US and Canada next month.  In the US, the new season of the WotWots debut on The Hub on Wednesdays at 11:30a from October 4, 2011, with the second season bowing in Canada on Treehouse, where it will air daily, also beginning October 4, at 12:10p.  For the Canadian run, the WotWots recently partnered with Earth Rangers ( www.earthrangers.com) for an interstitial series, Life in Crisis (4×2), which will broadcast on Treehouse during episodes of the series.  The interstitials the WotWots focus on the Earth Rangers Back the Wild! campaign featuring endangered animals, the monarch butterfly, the spooted turtle, the American marten and the plains bison.

Moonscoop inks pre-sales ahead of Mipcom for the new second season of the CGI-animated series Casper’s Scare School (52×11 or 26×22).  Produced by Moonscoop with Classic Media and DQ Entertainment, Casper’s Scare School is newly acquired by broadcasters including Mediaset (Italy), Disney Channel France, DR (Denmark), and Telequebec (Canada).  The new season of Casper’s Scare School is set to deliver in June 2012.  Moonscoop handles worldwide distribution, excluding North and Latin America, and the UK, which is handled by Classic Media.  DQE manages distribution in the Middle East, Oceania and Asia.

Indie producer Moi j’aime la television (MJTV) will arrive at MIPCOM with two new series, the live-action series Switch, and its new mixed live-action and CGI animated series BleepHappy Audience is handling international sales for both new series.   Additionally, MJTV adds new partners for the Genie in the House  The Movie.

  • Switch (26 episodes), a Canal J (France) commission, is currently in pre-production with filming set to begin in spring 2012, followed by delivery in the fall.  Created by Grant Cathro (head writer – Genie in the House), screenwriter Lee Presman (Genie in the House, Shaun the Sheep, Rastamouse) and producer/director Phil Ox, with Grant and Lee serving as head writers, Switch is set in a high school and combines music, dance and a little bit of magic.  Jack (16) wants nothing more than to be a music star, but mostly he’s stuck in high school … until a young witch and a teen fairy crash land into his life  music and dance ensues.
  • Bleep is a multitasking, shape-shifting robot built by an advanced civilization in another galaxy to help with all those pesky home chores.  When Bleep is mistakenly delivered to a girl on Earth, Charlotte (14), things go a endlessly haywire for her and her family.  Bleep is also created by writer Grant Cathro and producer/director Phil Ox.
  • New partners coming on board MJTV’s stereoscopic 3D Genie in the House  The Movie, which is based on the TV series, are French theatrical distributor Gebeka (Kirikou I and II, My Neighbor Totoro) for release in French theatres, and Scopas Medien (The Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams), which will co-produce the movie and handle German language rights for the movie.  With a budget of close to US$14 million, the movie is slated to begin principle photography in summer 2012.
