Cyn opsis: Kids!
09/15/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, September 15, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Nintendo announced yesterday its new Wii video game console will launch first in North America on November 19, with a price tag of $249.99. The Wii will com with one wireless remote controller, one Nunchuk controller and five different sports games on one disc. Nintendo also said the Wii will debut in Japan on December 2. Back here in the US, there will be 30 software titles, in a range of genres and ratings, by the end of the year. The first-party Nintendo game titles will sell for $49.99. That said it is worth noting that the Wii is backwards compatible with GameCube game titles. Maybe, they’ll make a fairytale game and then you can buy it and go Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home (yes a terrible joke but it had to be done).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Imagi Animation Studios has picked up the feature film rights to the anime franchise, Astro Boy, from the Tezuka Production Company. Based on the manga character created by Osamu Tezuka in 1952, Astro Boy, or Tetsuwan Atomu (translated: Iron Fisted Atom) as he was initially known, will be produced as a CG animated movie that is currently slated for release in 2009. The original Astro Boy anime series debuted in Japan in 1963, and the same year it premiered in the US on NBC.
BBC Wales will begin production next month, in Wales, on The Sarah Jane Adventures, a new live-action series for CBBC from Doctor Who writer/producer, Russell T Davies. Set in present-day West London, the series revolves around investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith, one of Doctor Who’s most popular companions (1973-1976), and her 13 year old neighbor Maria. The show will launch in early 2007 with a 1hr special that tells back-story of how Sarah Jane and Maria were brought together and their battle against the shrewd Ms Wormwood. Written by Davies and Gareth Roberts, The Sarah Jane Adventures will broadcast on the CBBC Channel and CBBC on BBC One. As for K-9, the robotic dog Sarah Jane gave to the good Doctor, he will appear in the special but won’t be in the series. I guess K-9 will be too busy with his own new series from Jetix Europe and Park Entertainment along with Bob Baker, who also wrote for Doctor Who.
RDF Media Group and Cinemation have entered into a deal to co-produce Hippo-T Hopp (26 episodes), a new animated TV and music series that will make its debut at Mipcom Jr. next month. The series is about Hippo-T Hopp, a hip hop rapper on the verge of greatness with a record deal in the offing. Expected to be available in 2008, Hippo-T Hopp will initially run in the UK, with RD USA looking for license the series in the US. Created by director Rob Minkoff, songwriters Michael & Patty Silversher and producer, John Semper Jr, all well known in their field, RDF Rights holds all of the TV rights to Hippo-T Hopp. Nigel Pickard, RDV TV’s Director/Family Entertainment, will serve as an Executive Producer of the series along with Minkoff.
Elsewhere, Rob Minkoff is currently developing Jay Ward’s Mr. Peabody and Sherman as a CGI animated feature for DreamWorks. Minkoff co-directed The Line King and directed the CGI animated movie Stuart Little and its sequel and is well know for directing the first two Roger Rabbit animated shorts.
B Wooding Media has added international brand management to its services with the global launch of Pacific Entertainment‘s Baby Genius, an infant/preschool targeted edutainment brand. The Baby Genius brand includes over 30 music CDs, 10 animated/live-action titles available on audio and DVD in English and Spanish as well as a consumer products campaign with a major U.S. retailer launching in 2007. BWM will launch the rollout of the international brand management for Baby Genius at MIPCOM.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Mattel has entered into a new licensing partnership with Procter & Gamble to produce Barbie oral health care products. The Crest and Barbie co-branded line is scheduled for release at the start of spring 2007. In addition, under the agreement all Barbie oral health care business will be handled by Procter & Gamble, which currently produces Barbie toothbrushes under its Zooth brand. Because I couldn’t leave you hanging, I asked a few questions and got some additional facts for you about the line: First, the flavor of the toothpaste will be, Burstin’ Bubble Gum. Secondly, there are no plans to include Ken in the new oral product line. Poor Ken, maybe he will get his own Doppler Radar or something like that one day soon.
Jazwares, release its Marvel Heroes Ani-Movie, animated movie maker set. Kids can make their own animated projects using stop motion, digital technology, which they can also edit and lay in sound effects and visual effects, and then watch on TV. Kids can choose backgrounds then place it on the stage, place Marvel characters, in this case, Spiderman, Hulk, Green Goblin and Dr. Doom. http://www.jazwares.com/
EXECUTIVE MOVES

Osborne will head-up 9 Story’s effort to grow its international distribution and portfolio of intellectual properties. Today’s Trivia Question: This company’s mascot is little more than the product itself, donned with cap and cane, as designed by a child in 1916, and for his design he was paid a whopping $5. The mascot is still in use today. Who or what is it? ( click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.
