Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Friday, October 9, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Twitter‘s recent $1 billion evaluation suddenly seems a little more reasonable. The microblogging service is currently in talks with Google and Microsoft to license its 140-character data feeds to both companies’ search engines, reports the WSJ’s AllThingsD. Integrating Twitter feeds into Bing and Google search would provide more immediacy to web searches, tapping into user activity and corporate tweets around breaking news, trends and current events. It’s not clear how Twitter would be compensated for helping to drive traffic to third party sites, but even a fraction of a percentage point of the $10 billion generated each year in search advertising would be quite a head start for a company that has yet to generate any real revenue.

Scripps Networks Interactive announced it is rebranding Fine Living Network (FLN) as the Cooking Channel and is the company is currently in discussions with distributors about a relaunch campaign. The Cooking Channel will be offered both in both standard and high def and will launch with a VOD component as well as a brand new website. The new network, currently in about 55 million homes, will operate out of Scripps Networks studios in New York City’s food-centric Chelsea Market. Showtime announced its debut of an exclusive animated webisode series titled Dexter: Early Cuts, debuting Oct. 25 on Sho.com. The 12-part series, narrated by Dexter star Michael C. Hall, will be presented in four, 1-2 minute chapters over 12 weeks, detailing how Dexter’s killing techniques evolved and revealing interesting tidbits about his life. The product incubation department Hulu launched last May, Hulu Labs, introduced a pair of new experimental services it is testing before launching them to the world at large:
- Hulu Publisher Tools are designed to help bloggers, publishers and website editors to quickly find embeddable videos hosted on Hulu or more than 100 third party sites. Simply search than check off which videos you’d like to embed and the site generates a playlist
- Hulu Desktop, a downloadable client application previously available for Mac or Windows enabling users to literally lean back from their screen and navigate the site using Mac or Windows remotes, is now available for Linux. (This will please a small but very devoted Linux following)
France-based video sharing site Dailymotion has raised another 15 million euros ($22 million) to help it pay the fees associated with higher bandwidth costs, per paidcontent.org. The site’s audience has continued to grow – Dailymotion claims 60 million monthly global uniques – but efforts to monetize that audience have fallen short; less than 10% of its videos include advertising.
Video sharing service Motionbox acquired similar personal video storage service Viddyou for an undeclared amount. Along with free uploading, both sites offer subscription-based premium services featuring HD playback and sharing, unlimited archival storage, and download capabilities. Existing Viddyou Premium users will be granted Motionbox Premium subscriptions.

The growth of Local Interactive Advertising will contract for larger media companies in the coming year as a broader array of national and local advertisers continue to adapt new technologies and spend more on online media, according to a new report from Borrell Associates. Local online advertising will reach $14.2 billion in 2009, up 12% from ’08, but that growth will slow to 5% in 2010 to $14.9 billion. While mobile continues to be a “hot growth category” in other areas, it won’t play as large a role in local media next year, making up only 15% of the total local interactive ad pie.
Microsoft is close to settling its decade-long knock down, drag out conflict with the European Union over antitrust issues related to bundling Internet Explorer with Windows. The EU announced a decision to test market a pair of measures that would one – allow European web users to toggle EI on and off and choose among several browsers, and two – insure the interoperability of future Microsoft products with non-Microsoft software.
Upping its toolset for mobile publishers and marketers, comScore introduced a new “Plan Metrix Mobile” media planning tool focused exclusively on mobile consumer segments. The service provides insight into mobile consumer behavior, tracking technology ownership and usage, demographic profiles, lifestyle, attitudinal, product purchase and offline media consumption data.
Consumer travel site and search engine Kayak.com announced it is opening up access to its travel search data to third party sites. The company is launching a travel demand benchmark, providing an open source of travel statistics and information from hundreds of millions of travel searches.

Online video services provider Ooyala has introduced a live video streaming feature for content publishers, integrating it with its existing analytics, branding and monetization tool set. The solution, which competes with other live streaming platforms such as Ustream and Bit Gravity, is simple to use and makes Ooyala yet another one-stop shop for content providers who want to deliver and archive live coverage of sporting events, conferences, music shows or theatrical performances. The company has already released the technology to some its existing clients, including EA, AVP Pro Beach Volleyball and the Arsenal football club. Francis Ford Coppola, who began making movies with an 8mm camera and a tape recorder, predicted in the 1991 Hearts of Darkness documentary that the “professionalism” of moviemaking would be destroyed with the proliferation of cheap video cameras. Well, cheap live streaming is doing the same for broadcasters. Giving small publishers the ability to reach a live, international audience across the web, measure it and monetize may be the final step in the democratization of media – leading to the tipping point, to coin an overused phrase. (Do we owe you a fiver for that, Mr. Gladwell?)
