CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
GEORGE LOPEZ FINISHES FIRST Season 5 Premiere GEORGE LOPEZ CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Friday, October 7, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. The good news is The WB has given the given the order for a full season of Supernatural with 22 episodes. Produced by Warner Bros. TV, Supernatural launched on September 13th. The bad news is another show on The WB has been cancelled: Just Legal from Jerry Bruckheimer, and starring Don Johnson and Jay Baruchel, ditched after just three outings. No word yet on what will fill the Monday night 9p time period on a regular basis (tho next week will be a repeat of Related), or when/if the remaining eps of Just Legal will ever see the light of day. Also cancelled is NBC’s Inconceivable (Touchstone Television), and airing in that time period for the moment will be Law & Order: Criminal Intent. While no official announcement has been made on this cancellation, Variety reports production has been shut down. These mark the 2nd and 3rd cancellations so far of the season, the first being Head Cases on Fox. Over on cable network FX, comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed with an order for 13 more episodes. On the flip side, Starved will not be renewed. Dennis Swanson has been named President/Station Operations at Fox Television Group overseeing 35 Fox and UPN local station affiliates. Swanson makes the shift to Fox from Viacom Station Group. You’ll recall quite recently Tom Kane was name top station dog at Viacom Station Group, which made Swanson the #2 guy. A move that perhaps helped sway his decision to join Fox. Tonight’s Premieres: * MORE GOOD STUFF *Paramount Domestic Television has signed Judge Judy to another four years on the bench, taking her thru 2009-2010 television season. Judge Judy has been in syndication for ten years now, this her tenth season, and she is among the top ten shows virtually every week. Scheduling Note: If you missed CBS’ premiere of Close to Home, you’ll get another shot at it on Saturday at 8p. Comcast-owned OLN launched its airing of the 2005 NHL season on October 5 with the NY Rangers vs. Philly Flyers and earned a .4 HH rating with 353,439 total viewers. As compared to the whole of 2005 averages (12/27/04-10/04/05), the total viewership is up 183%. Among men, the audience was up by 577% in Men 18-34, and up 277% with M18-49. The November 6 airing of NBC’s The West Wing will be a live performance and feature a Presidential Debate between the characters played by Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits. Because you know we have more than one time zone, this episode will be performed twice – once for the east coast and again for the central time and pacific time zones. Ted Koppel‘s last Nightline episode will air on November 22. ABC News will return on November 28 with the new post-Koppel edition of Nightline, and while no official information yet as to what that show will look like (single topic, multiple topics) and who will be hosting, Broadcasting & Cable reports staffers were told on Wednesday the show would have two anchors – based in NY and DC – and will include four segments. The season finale of the current season is scheduled for November 14 at 10p. Also from MTV, a new unscripted drama called 8th & Ocean. This series will join the schedule in first qtr 2006. The show focuses on a group of 10 young men and women, all models and all working in the fashion industry, and all living together in a beachfront apartment. 8th & Ocean was created by Liz Gateley. Joining the cast of CSI: NY as a regular this season is Anna Belknap in the role of Lindsay Monroe, a new young CSI member who recently made the trek to NYC from Montana. Belknap’s first appearance on the CBS series is in the episode Zoo York, airing next Wednesday, October 12. ABC has ordered a script from Storyline Entertainment that is reportedly inspired by songwriter Diane Warren. The story is about a woman who is a successful songwriter of love songs, tho is not nearly as successful in her own love life. The plan is if the show goes to series, says Hollywood Reporter, is to include music by Warren (Unbreak My Heart, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, How Do I Live, and so on), as well as include new songs Warren will write for the show. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Hispanic Communications Network (HCN) named Carlos Alcazar as President. He will oversee the company’s growth in the TV, custom publishing and internet markets. Hispanic Communications Network is a media campaign producer centering on the Latino market. Carlos was previously VP of a Pearson plc company. Britta von Schoeler has been named SVP/GM of Broadway Video Enterprises. She will report to Jack Sullivan, CEO. Britta is responsible for strategic planning, new business development and marketing for domestic and international exploitation of existing Broadway Video Entertainment programming. John Skipper has been chosen by ESPN as EVP/Content, taking on the programming responsibilities held most recently by Mark Shapiro. In addition to running programming and production, John will also oversee ABC Sports programming. * RATINGS *Wednesday — A18-49 Analysis: ABC led the charge on Wednesday night with an overall 5.8/15 A18-49 according to fast affiliate numbers from Nielsen Media Research.
