Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10.04.13
Good morning. It’s Friday, October 4, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Scripps Networks Interactive launched a new online video streaming site, Ulive. The network will feature lifestyle videos from Scripps brands including HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network and Travel Channel, as well as 70 new original web series. Thirty-two original shows are on the site so far, and Ford has signed on as a launch partner. “Our network viewers are always looking for complementary content from our brands, and now this is how they can find it,” COO of Ulive Lisa Owens told Cynopsis.
Amazon Studios, in a race to catch up to Netflix, has ordered three new comedy pilots, which will be available for free on Amazon Instant Video in early 2014. Whether they go to pilot will be determined by customer feedback – in May, Amazon plucked five series out of fourteen pilots which will be video-streamed as part of the $79 Amazon Prime shipping service. Two Amazon comedies will bow this fall, Alpha House, starring John Goodman and Betas.
Entertainment network Crackle premiered its original web series Cleaners yesterday. The show features stars like Hannah Montana’s Emily Osment and David Arquette. The first season includes six 30-minute episodes available on crackle.com and mobile platforms.
FremantleMedia and Syco Entertainment created two YouTube channels dedicated to the best of The X Factor and Got Talent, featuring clips from any and all of their global versions. The partners also plan to produce original content, including spin-off shows and weekly roundups.
This Sunday, MTV will re–air biopic Miley: The Movement, enhanced with never-before-seen footage. However, fans can access the clips sooner through the MTV app for Android and Apple devices, by tweeting with the hashtag #UnlockMiley. Viewers can also track the “unlocking” status on unlockmiley.mtv.com. “Given the importance of mobile as an access point for our audience, we decided to premiere these sneaks exclusively in our brand app,” Senior Vice President of MTV’s Connected Content Colin Helms told Cynopsis.
Cartoon Network is airing its original movie CONTEST on Sunday, with a live online Q&A following as a way to recognize October’s National Bullying Prevention Month. Author and family expert Rosalind Wiseman will host the web chat with viewers at www.StopBullyingSpeakUp.com directly after the telecast.
IFC Network is announcing the comedy event Festival Supreme, and hyping it with a marathon of IFC comedy shows from Oct. 12-18 hosted by Jack Black’s band Tenacious D. Promotional spots featuring the band, editorial content and festival updates will be exclusively available at IFC.com.
IMAX released a behind-the-scenes video of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire online, yesterday. IMAX produced the video to advertise the technology that’s featured in the second movie installment, which will hit theatres Nov. 21. The video can be viewed on Fandango.
Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).
Brands pay to be seen, but what if the only eyeballs they’re attracting belong to a robot? The Wall Street Journal says sites are collecting big dollars based on inauthentic web traffic that’s produced by bots. Internet security site MdotLabs, which has counted as many as 15 billion invalid impressions on sites per month, says this fraud is costing advertisers an estimated $180 billion. CEO of ad solution provider Tremor Video Bill Day chimed in about the issue in an open letter, saying, “Collectively, we must demand more from our industry and help brand marketers and their agencies leverage the new digital world so that brand marketing can flourish online.”

Cynopsis Future TV Summit:
Content Innovation & Next Gen Advertising Models
October 17 | Grand Hyatt |NYC

Facebook, which reportedly began sending data reports to the major networks about TV-related activity, released a report to Variety on Thursday, and social activity around September premieres generally corresponded to ratings. The top three most active shows were ABC‘s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (which opened to 12.4 million viewers), Fox‘s Sleepy Hollow (10.1 million) and CBS‘s The Crazy Ones (15.6 million). Low in the “like” list were CBS’s We Are Men, ABC’s Lucky 7 and Fox’s Dads, all ratings disappointments. Establishing a relationship between ratings and social media is key to grabbing marketing dollars from the nets.
Picture messaging app SnapChat unveiled Stories, a new feature that allows a user to compile all of their snaps within the last day into a single bundle. Unlike the usual “snap,” it can be viewed over and over once sent to a friend.
In other words: SnapChat wants to get a piece of the Instagram video and Vine pies.
Naomi Bulochnikov announced that she is leaving Al Jazeera America for Sony Pictures Television as its Director of Media Relations. She will be leading the publicity for the company’s Crackle network.
Consulting company Futuresource has appointed Phil Maddocks as its Market Analyst for the education technology team and James Edwards as a sales marketing assistant. Futuresource also hired Nicky Price as research analyst for the broadcasting equipment team.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
It’s officially a dance off. Marina Shifrin, the woman who gave her notice earlier this week via a video set to a Kanye West tune, just got a taste of her own medicine. Her former employer, Next Media Animation, responded to her with a video of its own, touting how cool the company is, and how they are now… hiring. The videos can be viewed at www.cynopsis.com.
See you tomorrow,
Jessica Reese
