10/27/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 27, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC has given that all-important shot in the arm to three of its new freshman series with requests for four more scripts for The Nine, Help Me Help You and Men in Trees.  NBC‘s Studio 60 has also received an order for three more scripts.

As for Fox‘s new series Vanished, producers have been told to wrap up the kidnapping of the Senator’s wife in 13 episodes, rather than in the full 22.  And in an unusual move, lead FBI investigator who annoyed nearly everyone was killed off in last week’s episode and actor Gale Harold was let go. Enter new actor Eddie Cibrian as the show’s new star, FBI Agent Daniel Lucas, who is also an ex boyfriend to TV reporter Judy Nash.  All in all, if this is one of your shows, the initial questions asked in the pilot will be resolved before the show goes away. If the show continues, the other unresolved issues will be dealt with then.

Freshman Score Card:
Shows ordered to full season:  5 – Heroes, Jericho, Shark, Ugly Betty and Brothers & Sisters
Shows cancelled (officially or unofficially):  3 – Kidnapped, Smith and 20 Good Years

Tonight’s Premieres:
NBC:  Las Vegas at 9p
Showtime:  Masters of Horror at 10p

* MORE STUFF *

ABC will debut Show Me the Money game show with host William Shatner, on Wednesday, November 22 at 8pm.  The game show, produced by Endemol, steps in as Dancing with the Stars finishes up.  Show Me the Money has the same type of format as 1 vs. 100 and Deal or No Deal in that one contestant is depending on a larger group of people for answers – be it trivial, suitcases of money or in ABC’s case, scrolls of money.  Each show is also 100% dependent on its host for the show to be successful. Fox will debut its new game show next month as well – The Rich List, which airs on Wednesdays at 9p as of November 1st with British host Eamonn Holmes.

NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution has sold the drama series Law & Order: Criminal Intent to the Fox-owned and operated stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other top U.S. markets beginning Fall 2007.  The 2-year deal is straight barter with 7.5 minutes of commercial time being retained by the station, and 7.5 minutes being sold in the national barter arena.  Stations will strip the show M-F either in early fringe or late night; and L&O: CI continues to run in strip form on the USA Network, and on Sunday nights on Bravo.  The series is produced by Wolf Films in association with NBC Universal Television Studios.

MGM Studios Inc. has made more programming available from its TV library for purchase and download on the iTunes Store. The new additions include first season episodes of The Addams Family, The Outer Limits and 32 half-hour shows from the animated Pink Panther TV series.

Retirement Living TV
has signed a deal to be on the satellite television provider DIRECTV beginning November 6, in addition to expanding its programming to eight hours Monday-Friday, from 9a-5p. This new agreement adds 15 million households nationwide to the cable network’s reach. Currently, Retirement Living TV provides four hours per day of new programming on CN8 The Comcast Channel, which will continue and reaches 9 million homes in twelve states.

Actor Arthur Hill has passed away at the age of 84.  He had one of those faces you always recognized after starring in the 1970’s television series Own Marshall – Counselor at Law, and dozens of guest appearances on primetime series, most recently in a 1990 episode of Murder She Wrote and a Columbo episode the same year.  He also appeared in numerous films including The Champ, A Bridge Too Far and The Andromeda Strain.  He also accepted a Tony Award for his Broadway performance as George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf in 1962.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

ABC‘s serial series The Traveler, a midseason series that originally had an order for 13 episodes, has been cut back to just 8 episodes (including the pilot).

Joining the cast of the USA Network pilot project To Love and Die in LA are Frances Fisher and Ivan Sergei.  Shiri Appleby stars in the project as a woman who goes to California to find her long lost father (Tim Matheson) and earns he’s a hitman by trade.  She then decides to follow in her father footsteps.  Fisher plays Appleby’s mother; and Sergei a love interest.

Casting Call: The casting producers of ABC’s Supernanny season three have launched the Winter Casting Tour in search of all types of families who need Supernanny, Jo Frost’s help. Families should have multiple children from toddlers to teens and be willing to take Jo’s hands-on advice. Production lasts approximately two weeks, and families from any state are welcome to apply. The producers are also looking for celebrities and their families to participate in this third season, from comics, actors, musicians to athletes. The casting tour will stop in various cities, or interested parents can apply anytime at [email protected] or mail to Ricochet Productions, Attn: Casting, 3800 Barham Blvd., Suite 210, Los Angeles, CA 90068. Information can also be found at ABC.com, keyword Supernanny or call the Casting Hotline at 877/NANNY-TIME (1-877-626-6984). Families should include a description of themselves and the children’s ages.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Lion TV USA has upped Allison Corn and Chris Bryson as Executive Producers, effective immediately. Both will be based in the company’s New York office, reporting to Tony Tackaberry, EVP.

Azteca America named Angelica Bengolea as VP & Director/Sales for New York.  She will oversee sales and business development for the the Northeast region.  She was previously Account Manager/National Sales with the Univision Television Group.  She will be based in New York.

NBC Universal Sports & Olympics has appointed Seth Winter to SVP/Sales and Marketing, where he will lead all sales and marketing initiatives for the NBC Sports and Olympics properties including NBC Sunday Night Football, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Notre Dame football, as well as major golf, tennis and horse racing events.

Friday Fun Fact:
With the removal of 20 Good Years from NBC’s primetime schedule, it marks the first time since 1984 that producer Tom Werner has not had a series on the air in network prime time. (That 70’s Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Cybill, Davis Rules, Grace Under Fire, Roseanne, A Different World, among numerous others.)

The History Channel presents This Day in History: 1904 The first rapid-transit subway system in America is opened in New York City by Mayor George McClellan. The first route of New York’s subway ran north from City Hall, under Lafayette Street and Park Avenue to Grand Central Station, west along 42nd Street to Times Square, then north on Broadway to 145th Street. At 2:35 in the afternoon, the first subway train emerged from the City Hall station, with Mayor McClellan at the controls. The mayor liked his job as engineer so much that he stayed at the controls until the train reached Broadway and 103rd Street. At 7 p.m., the subway opened to the general public, and more than 100,000 people paid a nickel each to take a ride beneath Manhattan. Today, the New York subway system is the largest in the world.
