NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

TiVo announced yesterday the launch of out-of-home streaming for its new Roamio DVRs. The software update allows subscribers to watch live and recorded shows with a Wi-Fi connection. Currently, the TiVo app is only available for iOS software, but an Android app is planned for early 2014.

YouTube is expected to release a new music streaming service next month similar to Spotify’s paid and free subscription model. The service will target mobile users, and per YouTube’s latest offline mode function, customers can also have the option to briefly store songs on devices. Billboard reported the details yesterday, but YouTube has yet to confirm the news.

…However, YouTube did officially announce on its blog that all channel creators with 10,000 or more followers are now eligible to create paid channels. Previously, the program, which launched in May, was available to only 70 channels.

Yesterday, Vine rolled out a new feature called Time Travel and an editing tool called Sessions. Vine videographers can now edit and save posts before sending them out to the mobile community. The Time Travel tool is the biggest addition though, as it allows users to remove or reorganize shots within a post.

Video streaming network Portal A acquired video production company Seedwell yesterday. Seedwell is known for working with Nike, HTC, Google and Pepsi and has 200 million views on YouTube.

CONTENT MEDIA

Hulu is now offering video clips for mobile devices to everyone, instead of just the site’s paid subscribers. However, the clips will include pre-roll ads, and consist of only short clips, rather than full episodes.

Twitter is getting ready for Halloween by encouraging its users to spookify their display names for the holiday. Gizmodo’s Leslie Horn rebranded herself as DEVil HORN, and Business Insider’s Steve Kovach changed his to Kovach-O-Lantern.

ADVERTISING

Ad tech company Civolution and Optimal, a software platform for real-time ad buying, are integrating their technologies to serve Facebook ads that are synced to TV commercials being watched by FB users. Such magic is the result of Optimal’s real-time bidding platform and Civolution’s ad-triggering service, which will enable brands to buy Facebook exchange ads within two seconds of the corresponding spots airing on TV. A test run by the two companies showed that when a brand’s commercial aired on TV and instantly displayed again on news feeds there was a 60 percent lift in consumer click-through-rates.

Samsung was fined for almost $350,000 for paying people to bash HTC on web forums. The fine came from Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission, which opened the investigation last April.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

ABC News Digital launched the new ABC News App for iPhone and Android devices yesterday. The re-designed app features personalized push notifications, a news inbox, a “Best Reads” section and hourly updates from ABC News Radio. 

Fandango has redesigned its app for the Apple iOS 7 to include a slew of new features. The app will feature Showtime Countdown, quick access to movie trailers and to Fandango’s original series Weekend Ticket, and a new predictive search engine. The new app is available for free in the App Store.

Filmmaker Neal Edelstein of the notoriously scary The Ring franchise and Hooked Digital Media updated its interactive mobile story app Haunting Melissa, just in time for Halloween. The story changes with each viewer’s experience, and new features include interactive motion effects, push notification sounds between chapters and the ability to share creepy screen shots from the story to Instagram. The first chapter is free for all Apple mobile devices.

RESEARCH

Americans are getting 30 percent of their news from Facebook, and 78 percent of those said they click on news links to media sites after logging on for unrelated reasons. The new study from Pew Research Center was released yesterday, and noted that since 64 percent of U.S. adults use Facebook, this means that one in three Americans consume news there, too.

Mobile gaming revenue is expected to reach $8 billion in 2013, and $12.8 billion by 2017 according to a recent study from Futuresource Consulting. The new Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles due in November are expected to grow physical and digital games to $50 billion in 2014.
In other words: Within a year, mobile gaming has grown 23 percent, due in part to the rise in mobile device use. Google, Apple and Amazon are no doubt taking notice.

EXEC MOVES

AOL has promoted Ran Harnevo as President of its new global division of AOL Video. The company also announced that Gabriel Lewis will head AOL On Originals in addition to overseeing AOL Studios.

Public relations company Stanton Communications has promoted Amy Calhoun and Catherine Imus to be Executive Vice Presidents and Senior Strategists. The firm also named Lori Russo to the post of Mid-Atlantic Managing Director. Patrick Brady is now the Managing Director of Public Affairs.
