Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Kabillion enters into a carriage deal with Time Warner Cable, growing the VOD kid-targeted network’s availability to 35+ million digital cable households in the US.  The multi-platform Kabillion service is also available on Comcast, Bresnan and Blue Ridge cable systems.  Kabillion is a joint venture between Moonscoop, Remix Entertainment Ventures and Studio 100.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBeebies commissions indie UK-based producer Darrall Macqueen to produce the new mixed live-action/2D photo animation, preschool series Magic Baby (26×11).  Magic Baby follows the enchanting adventures of Baby Jake, the youngest of 10 kids that live in a windmill.  Jake’s 6-year-old brother, Isaac, narrates the series and interprets Baby Jake’s giggles and gurgles and takes viewers into an imaginary world with Jake and his animal friends.  Magic Baby is a Darrall Macqueen production in association with Ireland’s JAM Media, which will be produced by Maddy Darrall and executive produced by Billy Macqueen of Darrall Macqueen and Sarah Colclough for CBeebies.  JAM Media’s Alan Shannon will serve as animation director.

Animator Rodrigo Blaas is in talks with DreamWorks Animation to adapt his already noted short-film Alma as a full-length feature film, per Heat Vision.  The movie will be executive produced by Guillermo del Toro.  Blaas, who has worked on a number of Pixar movies including Finding Nemo and UP as well as some of its shorts, will write and direct the Alma movie.  Blaas and del Toro are also set to co-direct the animated movie Trollhunters.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Chello Zone’s international preschool channel, JimJam, expands with new deals in the Netherlands and Portugal.  JimJam has just launched on KPN (Netherlands) as part of the broadcasters new digital kid-targeted package.  KPN also picks up JimJam’s non-commercial VOD service.  In Portugal JimJam launches this week on Vodafone’s IPTV service as part of its basic package.  JimJam is already carried in the Netherlands on CAIW Media, UPC Nederland, Canal Digitaal, CAI Harderwijk, Delta Kabelcomfort and Ziggo.  The preschool channel is also carried by Glashart Media. In Portugal, JimJam is currently available via Cabovisao, Optimus Clix and Portugal Telecom (Meo).

Habbo Hotel ( www.habbo.com ), a teen-targeted virtual world, launches Habbometer, which will survey teens around the world on a range of topics and provide the results.  Each month the site will post a short poll of its users to see what teens worldwide think are cool and not so cool.  The Habbometer results will be featured on Sulake.com ( www.sulake.com ), the website of Habbo’s parent company.  The first poll on Habbo.com focused on music and surveyed 47,000 teens from 33 countries about music (e.g. listening habits, downloading), some of the results include:

  • Paying for music
    • 33% of teens prefer to download music without paying for it
    • Teens in Chile are least likely to pay for music  51% say they prefer this
    • 21% of US and 20% of UK teens report downloading music without paying
    • 21% of teens prefer purchasing downloaded music
    • 37% of Australian teens say they favor paying to download
  • Teens and CDs
    • 20% of teens polled report buying CDs
    • Teens in Sweden (40%), Germany (37%) and Denmark (35%) surveyed are most likely to buy a CD.  That versus 14% of teens surveyed in the US

MARKETING/LICENSING

Senario builds distribution for the Zibits miniature remote control robots (each about two inches tall) around the world.  Zibits are debuting in the UK, Russia and Eastern Europe.  Further plans will see Senario make Zibits available is greater Western Europe in spring 2011.  There is also an iPhone game, Zibits Rush, available via Apple’s app store.  Additionally, Zibits is in discussions for possible console games and an animated series based on the mini r/c robot characters.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

UK based companies Cicada Productions (Nature in Focus, The Club) and Bellwether Media (Blue Eye of Siberia, Saville Row, Tweed) have merged to form Cicada Bellwether.  Bellwethers’ Malcolm Neaum will serve as MD of the new company, Frances Berrgan as Chairman, and Christian Holland will continue as Head of Production
