Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 21, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

DreamWorks Animation SKG has acquired the rights to Dav Pilkey‘s popular Captain Underpants book series, which the studio plans to bring to the big screen.  The Captain Underpants books follows the adventures of two mischievous fourth grade kids, George Beard and Harold Hutchins, who hypnotize their school principle and transform him into their comic book superhero, Captain Underpants.  Scholastic published the first Captain Underpants book in September 1997.  There are now a total of eight Captain Underpants books published in 19 countries.

Disney begins production on two new projects, a new Disney Channel Original Movie, Let It Shine, and a new Disney Junior animated series, Oki’s Oasis.

  • Production has begun in Atlanta, Georgia on Let It Shine, which is scheduled to premiere on Disney Channel in summer 2012.  Let It Shine is a modern teenage version of Cyrano de Bergerac that is set in the world of gospel music and hip-hop.  The TV movie will feature a soundtrack with 12 original songs by noted music producers/songwriters/performers including Rock Mafia (Selena Gomez and The Scene Love You Like a Love Song), Toby Gad (Beyonce’s If I Were A Boy, Fergie’s Big Girls Don’t Cry) and David Banner (Dance the Night Away featuring Denim from Footloose and Get Like Me featuring Chris Brown and Yung Joc).  Let It Shine stars Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris), Coco Jones (Radio Disney N.B.T.), Trevor Jackson (Cold Case), Brandon Mychal Smith (So Random!) Nicole Sullivan (MADtv), and Courtney B. Vance (FlashForward) and Dawnn Lewis (A Different World).  A production of G Wave Productions, Let It Shine is directed by Paul Hoen (Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, Jonas), and was written by Don D. Scott (Barbershop, Barbershop 2: Back in Business) and Eric Daniel.  The TV movie will feature choreography by Danny Teeson (American Idol) and associate Brandon Show (So You Think You Can Dance).
  • Oki’s Oasis stars singer-songwriter/actress Mandy Moore (Tangled) as the voice of Oki, a cat sheriff maintains the friendly in her Old West town of Nice and Friendly Corners.  Oki’s Oasis is slated to premiere in 2013 on Disney Junior channels and programming blocks around the world.  The series focuses on early social skills about being good friends and neighbors, which includes lessons about sharing, honesty and forgiveness, for younger viewers.  Oki’s Oasis is a production of Wildbrain Entertainment, a DHX Media company, in association with Disney Junior.  The series was created by Denis Morella and George Evelyn and developed for TV by Holly Huckins, the folks behind Disney’s Higglytown Heroes.  Morella and Huckins are executive producers and Evelyn is co-executive producer.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products, a division of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), appoints Riki Group as its exclusive licensing agency in the Russia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) market.  Effective immediately, the new pact marks a move from a traditional licensing deal to a master licensee representation for VIMN in Russia.  As part of a larger, long term and partnership between the two companies, the appointment follows the recent acquisition of channel distribution, digital media and program sales rights for Kikoriki, the popular animated property known in Russia as Smeshariki, across Central and Eastern Europe (excluding Russia), the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific region (excluding Greater China).  The VIMN and Riki Group partnership will also include international program sales and channel programming businesses in the RCIS market.  Riki Group will now handle licensing deals for all VIMN programs in RCIS, including Nickelodeon properties SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, iCarly and Avatar, as well as the MTV logo and brands, including South Park, Beavis and Butthead and Jackass. Products currently available in the market include plush toys, accessories, apparel and stationery, with new deal currently being finalized for new products in the region.  Prior to this partnership with Riki Group, VIMN’s properties were represented in RCIS by Plus Licens. Plus Licens will continue to build Nickelodeon’s consumer products business as their representative agent in territories across other CEE and Nordic markets.

German brand management and media company m4e is appointed as the new licensing agent for the preschool series Little Princess (65×11) by Zodiak Kids for German-speaking territories.  Under the deal m4e will grow the licensing program for the preschool brand with new and existing partners across categories, beginning with apparel, toys and stationery.  Telescreen, a subsidiary of m4e, already handles the merchandising for Little Princess in Benelux.  The Little Princess TV series, which is based on the books by author/illustrator Tony Ross, can be seen in Germany on KI.KA where the third season will debut soon.  The German merchandising programme currently includes of DVDs from Foreign Media Group, audio books of season 1 from Edel Kids, a monthly magazine published by Panini, and puzzles from Ravensburger.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks a new license deal with Goldbuch to launch a line of Rebecca Bonbon, the French bulldog character, branded stationery products in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.  The new Rebecca Bonbon stationery line, which will include diaries and folders, is set to debut at retailer Paperworld in January 2012.  Rebecca Bonbon is popular Japanese character created by the original Hello Kitty designer Yuko Shimizu.  FME exclusively represents Rebecca Bonbon globally (excluding Japan and Korea) on behalf of Crown Creative.

Entertainment One (eOne) enters into a license deal with Icefresh Foods for a line of Peppa Pig shaped ice cream lollies for release in the UK.  Based on the preschool brand, the new Peppa Pig ice cream lollies are set to debut in the UK from March 2012.  eOne’s other FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) licensees for the Peppa Pig brand includes Heinz, Yoplait, Frank Roberts, Victoria Foods, Finsbury Foods and Kinnerton.

Earth’s Best and Sesame Street have launched their Perfect Play-Date Sweepstakes ( ), which runs now through October 31, 2011.  Earth’s Best is a sponsor of Sesame Street and Earth’s Best line of Sesame Street snacks and meals are made with natural ingredients.

CBeebies (UK) commissions indie producer Darrall Macqueen to produce a second season of its preschool series Baby Jake.  Production has already begun on the new season (26×11) of the hybrid live-action/animation series featuring the adventures of Baby Jake and his animal pals, which is narrated by his six-year-old brother Isaac  who has the ability to understand each and every gurgle that Jake makes.  Baby Jake launched on CBeebies in July 2011.  The first season of Baby Jake is set to debut on international feeds of the CBeebies preschool network in Africa, Poland, Asia, India, Latin America and Australia this November 2011.  BBC Worldwide holds the global channel, distribution and merchandising rights to series one.

The second season of the CGI animated series Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures debuts on The Hub on Saturday, November 5, at 9a.  Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures, which features the adventures of Blueberry Muffin, Raspberry Torte, Plum Pudding, Orange Blossom and Lemon Meringue in Berry Bitty City, is produced for The Hub TV network by American Greetings Properties.

Zodiak Kids holds worldwide rights in all media for the property.
