Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 10, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network unveils plans for a new original live-action/CGI movie based on Tiger’s Apprentice, the young-adult novel by Lawrence Yep and published by Harper Collins.  The movie features a screenplay by David Magee (Finding Neverland).  Jane Startz (Tuck Everlasting, Indian in the Cupboard) serves as executive producer on the movie.  Currently in pre-production at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, Tiger’s Apprentice is set for release in 2010.  This movie project joins the network’s expanding development slate, which already includes the adaptations of comic books Firebreather, The Vanishers, Mice Templar and the sequel to the live-action Ben 10 movie.

ITV Global Entertainment enters a first look, exclusive distribution deal with indie producer Kindle Entertainment.  Under the pact, Kindle and ITV Global will co-develop projects for the worldwide content market, beginning with their first project, the preschool-targeted series, The Troubadours (26×22).  Additionally, the agreement gives ITV Global worldwide distribution rights to the recently announced film, Dustbin Baby (1×90), which is based on the novel by author Jacqueline Wilson.  Kindle is currently in production on the third and fourth season of the kids series, My Spy Family, for Turner Kids (UK and Europe), while its first preschool series, Big & Small, which it produces with 3 J’s Entertainment for BBC in association with Treehouse and Studio 100, debuts this fall.

MORE KIDS STUFF

qubo (www.qubo.com) inks new deals that will bring new programming to the qubo Channel line up this November:

  • qubo acquires the animated preschool-aimed series Maisy (26 episodes) from NBC Universal.  The series is based on the Maisy books by author Lucy Cousins, and follows Maisy the mouse and her animal friends as their new experiences.
  • In an acquisitions deal with PorchLight Entertainment qubo picks up the preschool series:

    • Adventures From the Book of Virtues (39 episodes) – produced by PorchLight in association with KCET/Hollywood, Adventures From the Book of Virtues is comprised of animated stories based on stories from William J. Bennett’s book, The Book of Virtues.
    • And, making its US debut, Gofrette (26 episodes). Gofrette revolves around an inquisitive and spirited cat and his friends.  Co-produced by Zoe Mae Productions and Subsequence Entertainment, Gofrette is based on the books by Doris Brasset and Fabienne Michot.  PorchLight handles international distribution for the series, excluding Asia and Canada.

Bejuba! Entertainment inks new international broadcast deals for its animated series Jibber Jabber (13×30) with KIKA (Germany), Jetix (Latin America), TRT (Turkey), E-Vision (Middle East), RTP (Portugal), Noga (Israel), ABC (Australia) and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel.  Jibber Jabber is a YTV original series, Northwest Imaging and FX and Jibber Jabber Toons Ltd production.  The series debuted on YTV last month.

Move over Jackie Chan and Jet Li … Entertainment Rights (ER) debuts Kung Fu Magoo (1×80) at Mipcom.  The movie will be released theatrically in Mexico in 2009, and in North America as a direct-to-DVD release by Entertainment Rights via its distribution partner Genius Products.  Produced in conjunction with Mexico’s Anima Estudios, Motion Toons and Entertainment Rights, this newest Mr. Magoo adventure features not just good old Quincy Magoo but also the voices of Col and Dylan Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) and Alyson Stoner (Camp Rock).  Also on Entertainment Rights’ Mipcom slate are:

  • Guess with Jess (52×10)  the interactive preschool aimed series follows the adventures of Jess the cat and his farm pals as they follow explore their world.  Set to launch on CBeebies in fall 2009, the series features humor and music.
  • Barbie Thumbelina (1×75)  this is the newest of the Barbie movies.
  • Shelldon (26×30)  this CGI animated family series follow Shelldon, a star shell, as he and his friends set out to make the world a better and greener place.

CITV (UK) acquires the TV and online rights TV-Loonland‘s multiplatform animated property Pat & Stan, which includes 350 shorts, 1×30 special, and the new series (39×7) set for delivery in spring 2009.  ITV1 (UK) picks up selected shorts from the series.  CITV is set to debut the shorts on its website soon, with a TV launch slated for December.  Targeted to K6-9, Pat & Stan is a co-production of French animation producer MacGuff, TF1 (France) and TV-Loonland

Looks like the weather is going to be pretty good for those headed to or already in Cannes for the market.  For Mipcom Junior over the weekend with mostly sunny skies and highs around 75F/24C and the lows about 53F/12C.  As for Mipcom, which begins Monday, there may be some clouds mixed in with the sun but the temps will hold steady.  See you all there.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BabyFirstTV names Summit Entertainment as its exclusive, US distributor for its baby/toddler developmental DVDS. 

Nelvana Enterprises completes deals ahead of the fall Toy Fair in Dallas next week:

  • Planet Toys signs on as the North American toy partner for the animated series Grossology.  Planet Toys will produce science kids and distribute the Anjar line of role-play products and action figures based on the series.  Grossology airs on Discovery Kids in the US and YTV in Canada.
  • With new episodes of the preschool series Max & Ruby heading into production, a number of licensee signs on for the property, including: Mater toy licensee Jakks Pacific/Play Along; Ty Inc (beanies); JV Apparel (apparel, sleepwear); SG Footwear (US footwear); The Canadian Group (games, puzzles); Penguin Young Readers Group (books).  The series airs on Nick Jr. and Noggin in the US and Treehouse in Canada.

Cartoon Network Enterprises signs new broadcasting and licensing deals for Ben 10 in Germany:

  • German licensing agency, CTM (Concept  TV & Merchandising), will cover all licensing categories, with plans to roll out a licensing program across the region as new partners continue to join.
  • Ben 10 will debut on Germany’s free-to-air broadcaster RTL 2 in January 2009, with Ben 10: Alien Force slated to debut there on Cartoon Network and existing German broadcast partner Kabel 1 later in 2009.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sean Cocchia is upped to SVP/Business Planning and Development, Disney Channel Worldwide.  Cocchia, who had been VP/Business Development, reports to Rich Ross, President/Disney Channels Worldwide.  Prior to joining Disney 10 years ago, Cocchia was an investment banking analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston’s Media and Telecommunications Group.

Odis R. Rodriguez, a former Univision/Galavision and Liberman Broadcasting exec, has been named by Spanish-language kids network Sorpresa! to be in its new regional ad sales office in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX as Account Executive/Southwest Region.  Odis will report to Jon C. Dubin, VP/Ad Sales at Sorpresa!

Joel Atley is appointed Sr. Sales and Commercial Executive, C4i, a unit of the Digital Rights Group.  Atley will manage sales to Scandinavia, Benelux, Middle East, Germany and Israel as well as handling C4i’s back catalogue across broadcast and multiplatform distribution.  Additionally, he will also work with i-Rights, DRG’s emerging media rights group.  Prior to this, Atley was Sr. Sales Manager, 2waytraffic and Celador.

Correction: Sommer Hixson has been named Sr. Director/Public Relations, Entertainment Rights.  Hixson reports to Nicole Blake, SVP/Marketing.  Hixson’s name was spelled incorrectly and her direct report was wrong in yesterday’s edition.
