UK-based indie Acamar Films acquires the rights to author/illustrator Ted Dewan’s preschool book Bing Bunny. Acamar will create a new animated Bing Bunny (78 x 7) series and has already completed its first broadcast deal with CBeebies (UK). Acamar is also developing a publishing, licensing and merchandising campaign for the broadcast launch and has inked a multi-territory representation deal with TLC (The Licensing Company) to develop a long-term program with key partners around the world. Acamar and TLC have completed a worldwide deal with HarperCollins to publish classic Ted Dewan Bing Bunny stories and a major multi-format TV tie-in program. Bing Bunny looks at the realities, learning and adventures, ups and downs, of being a preschooler. Acamar’s co-founder Mikael Shields will produce the Bing Bunny series, with Lucy Murphy as associate producer and Howard Litton, former MD of Nickelodeon UK, serving as an Executive Producer.

LICENSING

Kidz Bop appoints Studio Licensing to represent licensing and merchandising for the K6-12 aimed Kidz Bop music brand in Canada. Studio Licensing will help bring Kidz Bop to Canada with a mass market consumer products program and integrated marketing program in 2013. The Canadian launch gets underway with the release of Kidz Bop 23 on January 15 in both Canada and the US. Kidz Bop will be supported by an extensive 2013 TV advertising campaign, which will see TV ads airing on kid and family networks including YTV, Teletoon Retro and Nick Canada in mid-December. In addition, the Kidz Bop Kids will make a number of appearances throughout the year.

Zodiak Kids completes new UK publishing deals for the preschool-targeted CGI animated property Tickety Toc. New publishing partners include: Igloo Books, which will launch a line of books (board books, paperbacks, pop-up books, coloring books and sticker & activity books) for the UK and Ireland in fall/winter 2013; Century Book will publish Annuals for fall/winter 2013; Immediate Media and Redan sign on to include Tickety Toc in its portfolio of magazines; Immediate’s Sunshine and I Love… from early 2013 and Redan’s Fun to Learn Friends and Fun to Learn Favourites from this month. Tickety Toc launched on Nick Jr. (UK) in April 2012, and last week on Channel 5’s Milkshake! (UK). Other free-to-air broadcasters that have picked up the series (52 episodes) include: TG4 (Ireland), France 5, Disney Junior (Canada), NRK Super (Norway), YLE (Finland), PTS (Taiwan), ATV (Turkey), Pop TV (Slovenia) and Network 10 (Australia). Zodiak Kids control all worldwide rights for Tickety Toc except in Korea and Japan.

Lima Sky, creators of popular mobile game Doodle Jump, signs three new licensing deals to create Doodle Jump-themed gear and apparel for the US. The new licensing efforts will see Doodle Jump products available in 2013. New licensees include: Freeze (shirts and tops for all ages); Fast Forward (bags and personal accessories); and Berkshire Fashions (cold weather and rain gear).

MARKETING

Nickelodeon and The Little Gym International, which offers experiential learning and physical development activities for infants – 12-year-olds at its 300 locations in 28 countries, enter into a partnership that will feature Dora the Explorer-themed birthday parties at 210+ The Little Gym locations in the US. The Little Gym will feature Dora-themed birthday parties that offer a unique curriculum developed with Nickelodeon and includes characters and activities from the series. The Little Gym also expects to also add Go, Diego, Go!-themed parties to its offering in 2012-13.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon and Sony Music Entertainment‘s (SME) release It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! Album. Four of the songs of the 11 on the new release are featured in the new stop-motion special, It’s A SpongeBob Christmas, which will air on Nickelodeon, Saturday, December 9 at 7:30p. The album also features seven new tracks co-written by Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob) and Andy Paley (Blondie, Brian Wilson, The Ramones). The album is currently available for digital download from online retailers.

DreamWorks Animation, in conjunction with smartphone games publisher PikPok, debuts DreamWorks Dash n Drop app ($0.99) for iOS and Android devices, based on the CG animated film Rise of the Guardians, which debuts in theaters Wednesday, November 21, 2012. A sleigh riding game, the DreamWorks Dash n Drop app is available from the App Store and Google Play. In the game, when there is trouble in the North Pole and gifts are everywhere – players jump in to help deliver them in the Guardians’ magical sleigh. Along the way, players will collect elves, coins, power-ups and upgrades as they travel around the world, while avoiding Pitch’s army of Nightmare enemies.

Nickelodeon has launched its new educational app, Bubble Guppies: Animal School Day in the US and Canada. Co-developed by Bubble Guppies TV series creators, Johnny Belt and Robert Scull and curriculum specialists, the new app teaches kids about animals and allows them to take part in a day of play at school. The app features a series of interactive games through which kids will learn about animal diets, habitats and attributes. The game also invites kids to follow any of the ten featured animals and complete an Animal School Day, they earn a Gold Star (Gold Starfish actually). In addition to playing through an entire Animal School Day, kids can choose to play one of the four re-playable educational games on their own. After every game, kids earn a reward sticker or a toy for Bubble Puppy. They can then visit and decorate Bubble Puppy’s doghouse to see and interact with their rewards. The Bubble Guppies TV series is executive-produced by Belt and Scull and co-executive produced by Janice Burgess, the team behind Nickelodeon series’ The Backyardigans and Little Bill.

Ruckus Media Group enters into multiple new e-Book partnerships for digital distribution including titles from five noted kid’s book publishers. Launching in Ruckus 2.0 at the end of November 2012 are e-Book titles from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, featuring: Toot & Puddle by Holly Hobbie, a collection titles by Todd Parr, Little Bee by Edward Gibbs, All Kinds of Kisses by Nancy Tafuri, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt‘s The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg, a number of Curious George e-Books, titles from Thomas Nelson such as Heaven Is For Real Kids, titles from Max Lucado and Margaret Wise Brown, and three song books from Iza Trapani from publisher Charlesbridge as well as picture books from All About Kids.

The first annual Asian Animation Summit (AAS), which will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia December 10-11, 2012, will showcase 36 new animated TV projects from producers in Australia, Malaysia, Korea and Singapore. These projects are in various stages of development and financing. AAS is designed to stimulate co-production and co-financing by featuring new concepts at an early stage to prospective co-producers, broadcasters, distributors and investors from Asia and international markets. Each of the projects will be presented in a moderated live pitch and question/answer session during the two-day event. An initiative of ABC TV (Australia), KOCCA (Korea) and MDeC (Malaysia), the AAS is produced and owned by Kidscreen.
