Cynopsis: Kids!
11/05/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney XD commissions a new live-action comedy Wasabi Warriors (working title) that is set to begin production in Hollywood this January 2011 and debut worldwide in Spring 2011.  Wasabi Warriors revolves around a strip mall marital arts studio, the worst dojo in the nationwide chain, and the misfit group of kids that find a leader in rockin’ skateboarder, Jack, who comes to work there and teaches the kids about karate and life.  The series stars Jason Earles (Hannah Montana), Leo Howard (Leo Little’s Big Show), a black belt in real life who will play Jack, Mateo Arias (Cold Case, Hannah Montana), Dylan Riley Snyder (Life During Wartime), Alex Jones and Olivia Holt (Black & Blue). The series was created by Jim O’Doherty (Grounded for Life, 3rds Rock from the Sun, who, with Marc Warren (Jonas L.A., Corey in the House, That’s So Raven), will executive produce.  The series producer is Joey Scott. Wasabi Warriors is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Producer/Director/Writer Chris Columbus, and his 1492 Pictures banner, is partnering with Lagardere Entertainment, and Timoon Animation on the animated monster series Scary Larry (52×13), per Variety.  Scary Larry follows the adventures of a teen werewolf and his pals, a vampire, mummy and monster, who together form a got band called Frightsylvania.  With a budget of $7 million, Annabelle Perrichon is adapting the series from Slave Labor Graphics’ comic book series Little Gloomy.  Scary Larry has been pre-purchased by Canal Plus and Teletoon.

The Weinstein Company acquires the North American and UK rights to the 2D animated feature Santa’s Apprentice, per Variety.  Produced by Alphanim, the animation arm of France’s Gaumont, the movie is a spin-off of Jan Van Rijsselberge’s animated series SantApprentice, which finds Santa training a shy boy to take over his job as he unwillingly retires.  The movie is co-produced by Australia’s Avrill Stark Entertainment, in association with Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon.  Santa’s Apprentice is set to make its world premiere at AFM, and has already been picked up by HBO in Latin America, Victory Productions in Benelux, Cinemax in CIS, Four Star for the Middle East, Lusomundo for Portugal, Weg in India and PT Amero in Indonesia.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon is set to premiere a one-hour Victorious one-hour special, Freak the Freak Out, will premiere Thanksgiving weekend on Friday, November 26 at 8p.  The special features two new songs, a title track performed by the series star Victoria Justice, and Give It Up, featuring a performance by co-stars Elizabeth Gillies and Ariana Grande.  As part of its holiday weekend programming, the network will also debut the special 7 Secrets: Victoria Justice, a look at the stars life, on Saturday, November 27 at 9p.  In support of Freak the Freak Out:

  • The song Freak the Freak Out will be available for sale on iTunes, beginning Tuesday, November 23.
  • The Freak the Freak Out music video will also be available for streaming on Nick.com (
  • www.nick.com ) and via Nick’s wireless partners.

TVS (Television Syndication Company) completes further international deals for the teen-targeted Eco Company series.  Picking up the green-centric series are National Geographic for Turkey, Astro for Indonesia, as well as TVNZ in New Zealand, TVB in Hong Kong and Al Jazeera in the Middle East.  Eco Company focuses on real teens that have made the environment and green-related efforts their mission.  A total of 21×30 episodes are currently available.

In other TVS news, the syndication and distribution company recently acquired Green Science (5×22), which is available in two different versions, one aimed at kids and the other targeted to teens/young adults.

Consumer Products (WBCP) and long-time retail partner, Hot Topic ( www.hottopic.com ), are debuting an exclusive Harry Potter merchandise boutiques to support the upcoming release of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 1 (November 19, in case you’ve been in a trance). The Potter boutiques will feature new products based on the Harry Potter property at all of Hot Topic’s 680 locations in the US and Canada.  For those brave enough to stand up to a test, there is also an in-store mobile app that will offer challenges to customers who participate via their iPhone and Android devices., they can earn digital “badges” to unlock rewards.

STONE SOUP

American Greetings Properties (AGP) will serve as a sponsor of the ASPCA‘s (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Tommy P.
