Google has some updates for its search algorithm and Google+. First, the new search update will affect 35% of web searches. How? It takes “freshness” and latest news and information into account. For example, for things that are frequently updated like recent events, hot topics or product reviews, the search will automatically pull up the latest information at the top, even if it was published within the last few minutes. For searches on recurring events, say conferences or the Emmys, you will also see the latest information, but what’s different is that Google won’t expect for you to enter search items like month or year to get that information; it will make that assumption and populate your search accordingly. Meanwhile, Google+ will get some YouTube and Chrome integration . A new YouTube slider lets you search for videos directly from your Google+ profile and then share the video to your friends all via a pop-up window so you don’t have to leave the social site. And YouTube playlists are going to be indexed into Google+ search results. As for Chrome, the +1 and G+ Notification extensions will now be offered on the browser, allowing you to share any page or website and keep track of your G+ activity no matter where you are on the web.



The Wall Street Journal‘s video service WSJ Live has signed distribution deals with Google TV, Roku, Apple TV and Dailymotion. It is the latest step in an aggressive expansion, notes Lost Remote, as the offering recently expanded to Boxee, Samsung and Sony connected TVs and Yahoo’s connected TV platform. The service, which originally started out as an iPad app, offers four hours of programming per day.

CBS stars are set to take over the network’s Facebook pages and Twitter feeds all of next week as part of the CBS Social Sweep Week. Stars from the network’s entertainment and sports shows will be in charge of their shows’ respective social media pages on the day their show airs. CBS will unveil which celebrities are taking part on the day of the program. Fans will be able to interact with the stars as they post status updates, photos, videos, show content and answer questions.

CNN Espanol has launched CNNEspanol .com for its viewers to have quick access to breaking news, latest videos and interviews. The website will also offer additional and extended content that goes beyond the edited versions that would be broadcast on the Spanish-language news channel. The site will also include an iReport section that will allow viewers to send their own videos, photos and stories.

Similar to what Google and Facebook have done, Twitter has a new feed called Twitter Stories that is meant to put a focus on interesting uses of the micro-blogging social network, says The Huffington Post. The site features celebrities and brands such as Roger Ebert and Burberry, along with fascinating stories from users who used Twitter in meaningful ways, such as getting a kidney or saving a user’s mother’s bookstore. Submissions can be made by tweeting at @TwitterStories or using the #TwitterStories hashtag.


TV e-commerce provider Delivery Agent has raised an additional $35.5 million in funding led by Intel Capital, which brings its total number in funds up to $107.3 million, reports TechCrunch. The start-up helps networks monetize content in two ways: by building online marketplaces for products and merchandise that appear on TV shows so networks don’t have to; and selling ad packages to brands that make the products that are set to appear on TV shows. Delivery Agent has already signed up the major networks, including NBC, FOX, CBS, ABC and MTV, for its service.

Facebook is becoming the most important tool in movie marketing and is on the path to become more valuable than the Super Bowl Ad, says Eric Kuhn, Agent, Social Media, United Talent Agency, from a report in Business Insider. To back up the claim, Kuhn noted that Paramount Pictures spent $3.1 million on a Super Bowl Ad for the latest Transformers movie, which generated 37,000 tweets. In comparison, Disney used Facebook to premiere the trailer for The Avengers, which cost them nothing, and ended up generating 61,000 tweets.

Ranging from $200,000 to $500,000 per ad package, Yahoo‘s Living Ads platform that comes within its Livestand news magazine app for the iPad might be priced too high, according to Mobile Marketer. Livestand is a direct competitor to Flipboard that creates a personalized news and magazine consumption experience for users that features content from over 100 publishers. While DreamWorks Pictures and Toyota are the first two brand partners for the app, Mobile Marketer says the pricing model might go the way of Apple’s decision to cut its iAd prices after initially charging $10 million for launch advertisers and $1 million for the rest.

Gorilla Nation has inked a deal to represent the online advertising inventory for nine separate multicultural sites, and in doing so will expand its own audience reach to 34 million unique visitors per month. The online branded sales company is a division of Evolve Media Group that sells website-specific, integrated media and ads across its online properties for Fortune 500 brand marketers.


Even with the rise of mobile devices and viewing, viewers are watching more television than ever, according to ‘s Fall 2011 TV Survey. In fact, 32% of viewers answered that they watch more than 30 hours of TV per week, and 93% indicated that they are watching more live television, up from 90% in 2010. Other interesting findings from the survey include:

  • In terms of DVR and on-demand, 71% watch more time-shifted TV in 2011 over 2010.
  • 62% watch more online content in 2011 than in 2010.
  • 15% watch six hours of online video every week, up from 4% in 2010.


For those of you suffering poor battery life on your iPhone 4S, Apple has announced that the issue lies within software. “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks,” an Apple spokesperson told TechCrunch. And fortunately, it may be sooner rather than later as Apple posted the iOS 5.0.1 beta to developers yesterday.


The Cinema Advertising Council has appointed Mark Mitchell to be its President and Chairman and Cliff Marks to be its Executive Director. Mitchell will bring his industry experience from being the chief revenue officer for Screenvision and numerous management positions at ABC Networks to his new post. Marks is a former ESPN/ABC sales exec who was also named one of the 50 top executives in advertising and media in AdweekMedia’s “Mediaweek 50.”
