CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

11/04/05

Good morning.  It’s Friday, November 4, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.  Welcome to the November Sweeps!

Ken Tomlinson, former head of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, resigned his post on the CPB board of directors last evening.  The announcement of Tomlinson’s departure comes just as the CPB board got its first look at the report from the CPB’s Inspector General, resulting from an inquiry into Tomlinson’s alleged partisan agenda concerning both the editorial balance of public broadcasting’s programming as well as misuse of CPB funds to push forward conservative programming and decisions.  Tomlinson’s exits leaves behind several other board members whose partisan agenda has been – and continues to be – scrutinized.  A statement released by the CPB said, “The board does not believe that Mr. Tomlinson acted maliciously or with any intent to harm CPB or public broadcasting, and the board recognizes that Mr. Tomlinson strongly disputes the findings in the soon to be released Inspector General’s report.  The board expresses its disappointment in the performance of former key staff whose responsibility it was to advise the board and its members.”

CBS has picked up the back half of Out of Practice (Paramount TV Network), for a full season order of 22 episodes. The show has averaged a 3.9/9 among A18-49 thus far this season.  Fox has ordered up three more scripts of Kitchen Confidential (20th TV/New Line). And finally from the WB, according to Variety the network has downgraded its order number for What I Like About You (Tollin Robbins Prods/Warner Bros. TV). The original order was for 22 episodes – that has been lowered to 18, which will bring the full complement of episodes in its four season library to just enough to go into syndication.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *Yep, as rumored earlier this week, CBS will purchase CSTV Networks for the total price of $325 million. They expect the deal to be finalized in early January 2006, which is after the Viacom split scheduled to happen by year’s end. Heading up the newly-owned CBS entity will be founder and CEO, Brian Bedol, reporting to Leslie Moonves. CSTV has 15 million cable subscribers, its companion website at CSTV.com and a network of more than 250 official college athletic website, all managed by CSTV.

Two new series launching on OLN this weekend:

  • Wanted: Ted or Alive features wildlife conservationist and lifelong hunter Ted Nugent as top dog survivalist in a new reality show for city slickers. The game is simple – do you have what it takes to survive a week in the wilderness, while competing in various survivor and outdoor competitions. The series premiers on Saturday at 5p, and airing subsequent Saturdays in its regular 10p time period.
  • Rock the Boat focuses on John West, and his crew from San Diego’s Ultra Custom Boats, as they put together custom interiors, sound systems, and a lot of posh to create high performance boats. This series debuts on Sunday, November 6 at 9p, and airing subsequent Sundays at 10p.

TV Guide Channel and TV Guide SPOT will team up with Premier Retail Networks to broadcast TV Guide programming on the PRN in-store network. The additional eyeballs will deliver 57.3 million viewers in more than 3100 retail stores, including several major chains such as Sears, Best Buy and Circuit City, as well as other PRN partner retailers including Wal-Mart and SAMs Club. The Watch This segments hosted by John Henson will air every day on PRN’s network; while TV Guide SPOT will provide a monthly segment of the best in upcoming movies and TV premieres. Additionally, the monthly TV Guide Spot pieces will be broadcast in high-def, which takes advantage of the high-def sets on display in many of the stores.

Note to self:  Whatever you’re doing, where ever you are, drop everything on Sunday night at 8p to watch the live Presidential debate on The West Wing between Congressman Santos and Senator Vinick, moderated by Forrest Sawyer. Sorkin rarely disappoints.  THEN, switch to Fox for Family Guy at 9p which will takes a no holds barred swipe at the Parents Television Council which ranked this show #2 in its worst TV show list. This is the definition of “good TV.”

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Dick Wolf‘s midseason drama for NBC called Conviction (NBC Universal TV) has cast Julianne Nicholson and Anson Mount as a pair of Assistant District Attorneys. The show focuses entirely on the young and newer ADA in the New York City DAs office.  NBC has given a 13 episode order for the new show.

MTV has ordered up a new project called Jamie Kennedy’s Blowin’ Up, according to Hollywood Reporter  Using some of Kennedy’s prankish talents, this show teams up Kennedy with Stu Stone as they attempt to break into the world of hip hop music, producing their own original music while also doing what Kennedy does best (i.e., pranks and garish behavior) all in an attempt to get their own record deal.

NBC Universal Television Studio will undergo some executive realignments. Says Hollywood Reporter, the network will bring together the cable and broadcast sides of the development process under one roof. Heading up the network and cable development team will be Angela Bromstad.  Shelley McCrory, SVP/Comedy Development and Katherine Pope, SVP/Drama Development, will oversee all the program development for the studio.  Additionally, Katherine will expand her duties to include cable dramas, in additional to broadcast TV.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Max Ramirez has been appointed to Manager/Sales and Marketing for Global Media Entertainment. Based in New York City, he will be responsible for the growth of National Sales for WAPA AMERICA Television in the UnitedStates, WAPA-TV & Televicentro in Puerto Rico. Max will report to Mr. Pedro Font, President/GME.

Anton Guitano has been chosen to succeed Dennis Swanson as EVP/Operations at Viacom Television Stations Group, reporting to Tom Kane, President. Anton was upped from CFO of the Viacom Television Stations Group and has been with the company for 27 years.

Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. has promoted Michael Clayton to GM and EVP/TV Guide Publishing Group. He will continue to report to Publishing Group President Scott Crystal. In his new role, Michael will act as the central point of communications for day-to-day operations within the Publishing Group. TV Azteca has named Adrian Steckel as President/CEO of Azteca America. Former CEO Luis Echarte will continue on as Chairman according to Variety.  Adrian will center on the network’s promotion and sales.  He was previously with the company in the 1990s but was most recently CEO of Unefon for the past 5 years.  He will continue to be located in Mexico City for the time being.

Michael Garvey has been named VP/Music Programming and Production, VH1 Classic. He will report to  Eric Sherman, GM and SVP/VH1 Classic and VH1 Digital Networks. In his new role Michael will continue to oversee VH1 Classic’s programming and development including long-form programming, and daily series and specials. In addition, he will also act as the liaison to VH1 proper and will help drive VH1 Classic’s multiplatform initiatives including VOD, Vspot and all wireless projects.

James Glasscock has been named VP/VOD for the Playboy Entertainment Group.  Reporting to Ned Nalle, Pres/Programming, James will manage all aspects of the Company’s video-on-demand business and liaise with Playboy’s distribution partners with the goal of implementing distribution, and optimizing revenue and subscriber satisfaction, specifically related to VOD and SVOD product.

MTV Networks Music & Comedy Ad Sales Group has appointed Bob Flood as SVP/Integrated Media Platforms.  Flood will report to Hank Close, EVP/Ad Sales, MTV Networks Music & Comedy Group.  Flood is charged with enhancing and expanding agency and client communications regarding the company’s digital offerings.  He will also create new advertising solutions through the development of the Affinity/Rewards programs, by partnering with units across MTVN such as MTV Enterprises and the MTV Networks Client Solutions Group.  most recently Flood served as EVP Director/Electronic Media, Optimedia International.

Friday Fun Fact:  The pyramids in Egypt contain enough stone and mortar to construct a wall 10 feet high and 5 feet wide running from New York City to Los Angeles.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1979-Followers of Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, seizing 90 hostages.  In the weeks that followed, Khomeini would seize control of the entire country.  After all non-U.S. citizens and American women and minorities were freed, the 54 remaining hostages would remain captive for 14 months, until Ronald Reagan’s inauguration.  On that day, after the United States freed almost $3 billion in frozen Iranian assets and promised $5 billion more in financial aid, the hostages were released.
