Good morning. It’s Friday, November 30, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
McDonald’s announced a multi-year deal that will make the chain the new Official Restaurant Sponsor of the NFL. As part of the deal, McDonald’s will also become the presenting sponsor of the 2013 Pro Bowl and be able to feature the NFL Shield and collective use of all 32 Team logos in its marketing and advertising. The sponsorship kicks off this December with a Chicken McNugget Pro Bowl Promotion at restaurants across the country.
“We are pleased to welcome McDonald’s to our family of NFL sponsors,” said Brian Rolapp, COO of NFL Media.”We are excited to be working with McDonald’s to bring our fans closer to the game with unique experiences during the Pro Bowl and all season long.”
On the Air
CBS Sports detailed plans for tomorrow’s SEC Championship game at 4p, pitting the Western Division Champion and No. 2-ranked Alabama against Eastern Division Champion and No. 3-ranked Georgia at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. With the winner set to face Notre Dame for the BCS Championship, Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will call the action with Tracy Wolfson reporting from the sidelines. Coverage begins with CBS College Football Championship Saturday at 3p with host Tim Brando and analysts Spencer Tillman, Archie Manning and Tony Barnhart.
FOX is going all in for UFC on FOX 5 which hits the network on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8p from KeyArena in Seattle and headlined by UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson facing Nate Diaz. UFC announcers Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan will call all bouts on FOX Sports including preliminary matches airing live on FX. Host Jay Glazer, Kenny Florian and Brian Stann will offer analysis for preliminary bouts on FX with host Curt Menefee, Stann and Randy Couture handling analysis for fights on FOX Sports. Coverage begins on Sunday with an hour long special titled UFC on FOX 5: Road to the Octagon, previewing all four fights that will air on FOX Sports’ card.
Univision Deportes hits the weekend with a bevy of soccer, including the finals for the 2012 MLS season and the 2012 Liga MX Apertura season in its Weekend of Finales. In addition, the channel will offer fans a first ever Spanish- and English-language simulcast of the second leg of the Liga MX finals on December 2. The game will see Liga MX: Toluca vs. Tijuana live on Univision for the Spanish-language broadcast while Univision Deportes Network offers the English-language broadcast at 6:55p.
StarGames and MSG Sports announced that the third season of World of Tennis Presented by BNP Paribas will debut next week with the first of seven episodes premiering on Tennis Channel at 7p on Wednesday, Dec. 5. The network will then run a new episode of the magazine show every other Wednesday through Feb 27, which will preview World Tennis Day, featuring BNP Paribas Showdown events in New York City and Hong Kong on March 4.
NBC Sports Network will air Still Standing: The Earl Campbell Story on Tuesday at 11p. The documentary takes a look at the famed running back and his story since retirement. After wrapping up his career in the NFL, Campbell faced five spinal surgeries, two knee replacements and an addiction to pain pills and alcohol. He was confined to a wheelchair for six years before undergoing a successful spinal surgery and is now walking again.
BTN is offering extensive coverage of the Big Ten Championship Game in Indianapolis starting today with the Big Ten Football Championship team press conferences starting at 3:30p. Mike Hall later hosts Big Ten Football Report Championship Preview at 7p with Tony Banks and Rosevelt Colvin from the Chicago studio. Game day coverage begins live from Fan Fest with #BTNLive at 11a before returning for the Big Ten Championship Pregame Show at 6:30p. On Sunday, the network will feature the Big Ten Bowl Selection Special at 9p.
Golf Channel is poised for growth, asking the city of Orlando for financial incentives designed to create 75 new media and telecommunication jobs at the network next year, according to the Orlando Business Journal. In addition, the company is looking to expand its local headquarters and invest $1.9 million in construction and equipment.
FUEL TV announced that the channel’s audience-growth streak is alive and well with November marking 11 straight months and 48 consecutive weeks of viewership gains for the network, according to Nielsen. The channel’s November 2012 Total Viewers rose 150% while M18-49 were up 125% vs. November 2011.
Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky made it official, announcing the additions of Middle Tennessee State University and Florida Atlantic University into the league beginning no later than July 1, 2014.
Tonight’s edition of The Association: Brooklyn Nets will feature Brooklynites Spike Lee, Rosie Perez and Albert King in a discussion about choosing sides between the Nets and Knicks as well as a pass into the recent game between the two teams at Barclays Center. The episode runs on NBA TV tonight at 6:30p.

Las Vegas will see the grand opening of SCORE! on Wednesday, Dec. 5, featuring a multi-sport interactive exhibit and sports fantasy experience at the Luxor Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The exhibit will feature memorabilia from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Hockey Hall of Fame, Boxing Hall of Fame, U.S. Soccer Federation and more with more than 300 pieces housed in eight galleries including items dating to the early 20th century. Items include the 1999 Women’s World Cup trophy, the 1981 Heisman Trophy awarded to USC tailback Marcus Allen, championship rings, World Series trophies, Jim Brown’s 1957 MVP trophy and a collection from the Pro Football Hall of Fame that includes the shoulder pads won by Walter Payton when he set the career record for rushing yards in 1984, and more.
Rookie Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Grififn III now boasts the top selling NFL jersey, according to the league, based on sales from NFLShop.com. Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who slipped to second, followed by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Giants’ Eli Manning and the Patriots’ Tom Brady.
Hitachi announced that the company will serve as the primary sponsor of Helio Castroneves‘ No. 3 car for nine races during the 2013 IZOD Indy Car Series season. Hitachi will serve as the primary sponsor for the season-opening race at St. Petersburg, on March 24, as well as for races in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Detroit, Iowa Speedway, Pocono Raceway; Toronto and Sonoma, Calif.
Stewart-Haas Racing inked extensions with four of its partners through 2013 for a total of 10 races on the No. 39 Chevrolet car driven by Ryan Newman in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Sponsors will include WIX Filters, Outback Steakhouse, Aspen Dental and Code 3 Associates, who will all return as primary sponsors, joining Quicken Loans.
Digital Fields
ESPN is offering the first-ever Baseball Tonight digital series for the Baseball Winter Meetings from December 3-6, at 12:30p daily. The 10-minute live shows will incorporate news and analysis from ESPN MLB Insiders Buster Olney, Tim Kurkjian and Jayson Stark and posted to a special page on ESPN.com.
IndyCar and its teams and partners locked in a three-year technical partnership with Autodesk, to provide broad access to Autodesk software offerings, including Autodesk Product Design Suite, Autodesk Simulation 360, Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suite and Autodesk PLM 360. IndyCar’s engineering and operations group will use Digital Prototyping applications such as Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD software “to design and engineer product innovations for chassis, parts and components.” The group also plans to use Autodesk Simulation 360 to digitally simulate the performance impact of proposed design changes.
