Cynopsis: Kids!
11/19/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Junior will make its way to Canada as Astral’s Playhouse Disney re-brands its English and French-language networks as Disney Junior in May 2011.  Just as it will in the US, Canada’s Disney Junior will expand its educational efforts to focus learning on social values, the environment and healthy living choices.  The multiplex channel will launch with several new preschool series including Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Disney Poetry Shorts and Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps.  Disney Junior will also feature new episodes of existing series such as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso, Jungle Junction and Imagination Movers, as well as original Canadian series Franny’s Feet, The Secret World of Benjamin Bear and new episodes of Stella and Sam.

Canada’s The Alliance for Children and Television unveils its name change to Youth Media Alliance (YMA) during its annual Media-Jeunes conference currently being held in Montreal.  The reason for the name change for the 35-year-old association is to better reflect the YMA’s mission and the various screen-based content available to kids and teens across multiple platforms.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Denis Leary is in discussions to join Columbia‘s new Spider-Man movie, per THR.  Leary would take on the role of police captain George Stacy, father of Gwen Stacy who will be played by Emma Stone in the Spidey movie reboot.  Directed by Marc Webb from a script by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent, the cast already includes Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man), Rhys Ifans as the evil Dr. Connors (aka The Lizard), and Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Peter’s uncle and aunt Ben and May Parker.  The movie is expected to being production this December.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sprout celebrates the season with a range of holiday programming.  The network begins the celebration by featuring Sesame Street’s Elmo to The Sunny Side Up Show on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 9a-12p.  Elmo and show hosts Kelly and Chica the Chicken will take viewer calls, ready birthday greetings, and send out holiday wishes to viewers.  Additional December on-air plans for the preschool network includes a different holiday movie each Friday, and special Christmas Eve and overnight programming.  Sprout will also feature December Friday movies (1p) including Elmo’s World Happy Holidays, Barney’s Christmas Star, Caillou’s Holiday Movie, and Bob the Builder: A Christmas to Remember.  Christmas Eve on Sprout begins 1-6p with Elmo’s Movie Merry-thon, a movie marathon hosted by Elmo, followed by the annual Snooze-a-Thon (6p-6a) featuring hosts Nina and Star from The Good Night Show sleeping on set, and featuring clips of other famous characters snoozing away awaiting Christmas morning.

Thanksgiving will give all week on Nickelodeon beginning Saturday, November 20 and running through Sunday, November 28, 2010, which will include the premiere of the Victorious special Freak the Freak Out, and the behind-the-scenes special 7 Secrets with Victoria Justice, as well as five back-to-back premiere Nicktoons episodes, and on Thanksgiving Day, a sneak peek at the new Power Rangers Samurai series during a daylong movie marathon.  Additionally, Nickelodeon’s programming blocks and networks go all out for Thanksgiving too:

  • Nick at Nite will run a marathon of Thanksgiving-themed episodes on Saturday, November 20.
  • Nick Jr. continues to mark We are Thankful month with a marathon of preschool programming on Sunday, November 21, including premiere episodes of Toot & Puddle and Olivia.
  • TeenNick gets in the holiday spirit on Friday, November 26, with a The Thanks, Bro! Marathon, featuring back-to-back episodes of Drake & Josh, and for the first time on the network, Malcolm in the Middle.
  • Nicktoons gets in the action with premiere episodes Rush Zone: Guardians of the Core and Dragon Ball Z Kai, as well as an encore of the sneak peek of Power Rangers Samurai.

The Gruffalo, a mixed model/CGI animated half-hour special, will make its US premiere Thursday, December 9, at 7p on ABC Family, as part of the network’s annual 25 Days of Christmas on air event.  Produced by Magic Light Pictures and animated at Germany’s Studio Soi, The Gruffalo is based on the kid’s picture book of the same name by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The film’s voice cast features Robbie Coltrane, Helena Bonham Carter, Rob Brydon, James Corden, John Hurt and Tom Wilkinson.  Directed by Jakob Schuh and Max Lang, The Gruffalo was produced by Michael Rose (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run) and Martin Pope (The Heart of Me, Lawless Heart) through Magic Light Pictures.  The special made its UK premiere on BBC1 on Christmas Day 2009.

Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil will feature special guest stars Henry Winkler, Alyssa Milano and Tiffany Thornton on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25 at 8:30p on Disney XD.  Winkler will lend his voice to the school principal, while Thornton will voice the popular TV actress Teen Sometimes, and Milano as the stunt double Scarlet Rosetti.

Correction: In the Disney Junior item in yesterday’s edition should have read that the new Disney Junior basic cable and satellite channels will debut in the US in 2012.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Chapman Entertainment (Fifi and the Flowertots, Roary the Racing Car) signs William Lamb Footwear and International Greetings as new UK licensees for its preschool property, Little Charlie Bear, which is set to launch on CBeebies (UK) in January 2011.  William Lamb will debut a line of Little Charley Bear footwear (shoes, sandals, trainers, slippers, 3D slippers, boots, wellingtons and jelly shoes) in fall/winter 2011. International Greetings will introduce its line of Little Charley Bear products (e.g. art packs, poster art sets, chunky crayons, coloring wheels) in spring 2012.  Chapman Entertainment produces Little Charley Bear with Annix, a CGI animation studio based at Pinewood Studios.

Friday Fun Fact:    Scientists say that pigs, unlike all other domestic animals, arrive at solutions by thinking them through. Pigs can be – and have been – taught to accomplish almost any feat a dog can master, and usually in a shorter period of time.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:   What kind of animal is Zooboomafoo?  SPECIFICALLY, A LEAPIN’ LEMUR!  Kudos to: Joel Schwartzberg-PBS News Interactive; Tina Waganer-Tina and Friends/MD; Jeff Grant-Turner Broadcasting/Atlanta; Keith Manzella-Eastwest MG/NY; Carole Roeder/Lucasfilm Ltd; Kelly Winger-Centennial College Children’s Entertainment Program/Toronto; Kristen McGregor-Sinking Ship Entertainment/Toronto; Kyle MacDougall-Jam Filled Entertainment/Ottawa; Judith Handelman-Philanthrokidz/Toronto

Today’s Trivia Question:   What is the name of Little Bill’s hamster?  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
