Cynopsis: Kids!
11/18/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 18, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.

Cartoon Network acquires the TV rights to The Annoying Orange internet property.  Inspired by the viral sensation, with 850 million views on YouTube, a new half-hour TV series will premiere in 2012 as part of Cartoon Network’s original programming block.  Created by Dane Boedigheimer, The Annoying Orange TV series was developed and will be produced by The Collective, a management and production company, which also financed the pilot.  Boedigheimer co-created the TV series with Tom Sheppard (writer/Pinky and the Brain).  Conrad Vernon (director/Madagascar 3 and Monsters vs. Aliens) will serve as executive producer for the series along with The Collective’s Gary Binkow and Dan Weinstein.  The Annoying Orange has a dedicated YouTube channel and debuts new episodes every Friday.  The Annoying Orange short-form original content will continue to be produced separately from the TV series, and will be used to drive tune-in messaging.

LICENSING

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) names Mad Engine as the lead apparel partner for Spin Master’s boy-targeted property, Redakai.  Under the agreement, Mad Engine will launch a full line of boys t-shirts, fashion tops, tank tops, pullover and zip fleece, using various print applications and fabric techniques, which will launch at retail in spring 2012.  The new apparel line builds on Spin Master’s Redakai trading card game, as well as the Redakai: Conquer the Kairu TV series, a co-production from Spin Master and Marathon Media/Zodiak Kids, which can be seen Cartoon Network.  Additionally, Cartoon Network recently announced the first Redakai DVD, Redakai: Conquer the Kairu The Journey Begins will release on February 28, 2012 and will be distributed by Warner Home Video.

Peanuts Worldwide and Loud Crow Interactive enter into a multi-year partnership to produce a series of interactive digital book apps based on the popular Peanuts animated TV specials.  The first title, which launches this week, is A Charlie Brown Christmas ($6.99).  The book features original animations, voices, and musical scores from the classic 1965 TV special.  The narrator is Peter Robbins, the original voice of Charlie Brown. Other digital books such as It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown will follow in 2012 and on.  The partners say these new Peanuts interactive book apps different from traditional e-books in that the multimedia environment of the book apps allows users to interactive with individual elements, and characters and objects respond to touch and tilt gestures.  A Charlie Brown Christmas takes readers through Charlie Brown’s quest to find the true meaning of Christmas, as well as allowing readers to customize their own Christmas tree and have it integrated into the story itself.  Certain tree decorations can also be unlocked by solving a number of clues within the app. Additional content including a 12 Days of Christmas promotional update will be offered in December.  Loud Crow is making make these book apps available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android smartphones and tablets, Amazon Kindle Fire, and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color.  The Peanuts characters and related intellectual property are owned by Peanuts Worldwide, which is a joint venture by Iconix Brand Group (80%) and members of the Charles M. Schulz family (20%).

MARKETING

Xbox 360, a division of Microsoft, and the National Football League (NFL) inked a multiyear sponsorship making Xbox 360 the official console sponsor of the NFL and NFL Play 60.  Xbox 360 will work with the NFL’s youth health and wellness program, NFL Play 60, to help tackle childhood obesity by teaching kids about the importance of making healthy and active lifestyle choices, and of course that can include playing the physically interactive Kinect for Xbox 360.  Under the partnership, Xbox 360 will integrate into NFL Play 60 events and programs on all levels.  This can include donating consoles to schools as part of an NFL Play 60 Super School visit by NFL players.  Since launching in 2007, The NFL Play 60 program, the NFL and its teams have built 100+ NFL Youth Fitness Zones and organized 1,500+ Play 60 youth events.

Nickelodeon‘s preschool music group The Fresh Beat Band, and stars of the eponymous music-centric preschool series, is set to go on its first ever nationwide live tour, The Fresh Beat Band Live in Concert, kicking off February 2012.  The 15-week, 50-city concert tour features the band performing The Fresh Bean Band music from the first three seasons of the live-action series, designed to encourage music appreciation and to get preschoolers to express their feelings through movement, song and instrumental music.  Information about the tour and Fresh Beat Band party packages can be found at www.freshbeatbandlive.com . In addition, the band’s new music video and single, Just Like A Rockstar, will premiere on Nickelodeon and be available on iTunes on Tuesday, November 29.  The song will also be featured on the first The Fresh Beat Band soundtrack, which includes music from all three seasons of the TV series, and will release in January 2012.  Nick Jr. is currently debuting new episodes of The Fresh Beat Band on Fridays through December 9.  Finally, The Fresh Beat Band will appear in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 24 on the Dora the Explorer float and will perform with Jason Mraz at Carnegie Hall on November 25.
