Cynopsis: Kids!
11/12/10
Good morning. It’s Friday, November 12, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney Channel gives the go ahead on the new live-action comedy series A.N.T. Farm (13×30, working title), which is set to begin production early next year. The series stars 12-year-old China McClain (House of Payne) as middle-schooler Chyna Sparks, a music prodigy accepted into a gifted program, Accelerated Natural Talent (A.N.T.), at the local high school. Chyna and the other ANTs do their best to make their way through high school as the very youngest students there. The series also features Sierra McCormick (Ramona and Beezus), Jake Short (Dexter), Stephanie Scott (Flipped) and Zach Steel. The pilot for A.N.T. Farm was penned by Dan Signer (The Suite Life on Deck) and directed by Bob Koherr (Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place).
What happens when the rides and attractions at Disney theme parks come to life? We’ll find out in Disney’s movie Magic Kingdom, which is looking like it will be directed and further developed by Jon Favreau, per Deadline. An initial draft of the script was written by Ron Moore (Battlestar Galactica) based on his own pitch, but a new writer will be brought on to work with Favreau. As many have pointed out online, author Ridley Pearson’s young adult book series Kingdom Keepers, published by Disney’s Hyperion, deals with this same premise. No word on if the Kingdom Keepers series will be part of the further development of the movie?
Entertainment One enters into a three year US broadcast deal with Nick Jr. for its animated preschool series Peppa Pig. The series will debut on the Nick Jr. channel in the US in early 2011 in half-hour episodes. So far there are 156 episodes of Peppa Pig, with an additional 52 set to be produced over the next two years. Peppa Pig has been running on Nick Jr. and Channel Five’s Milkshake in the UK since 2004, as well as in other parts of the world. Once the series launches in the US eOne will develop a branded licensing and merchandising program for North America. Outside the US the merchandising program is currently valued at about US$242 million annually.
Cartoon Network will premiere the third season finale of the animated reality Total Drama franchise, Total Drama World Tour, on Monday, November 15 at 9p. Viewers can also log onto www.cartoonnetwork.com that night and view an alternate ending.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth, the fifth book in author Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, sold 375,000+ copies on its first day, November 9, 2010, on sale in the US to become the bestselling title in the series. Wimpy Kid publisher Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, reports the new title sold 50% more than the last book in the core series, Dog Days, which was published October 12, 2009.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Nickelodeon and Budge Studios are partnering to develop and publish interactive story book apps for iPhone and iPad based on the network’s series, including Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants. The first app under the deal, Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure, which is based on the TV special, will launch for iPhone and iPad on December 1, 2010. This first Dora story book app for these devices will feature holiday-themed original songs and interactive mini-games, as well as teaching Spanish, colors, reading and the concept of sharing.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) names Michelle Raimo-Kouyate as its new President/Production. Raimo-Kouyate will take over the reins from current SPA President/Production, Hannah Minghella, who is moving over to her new position at Columbia Pictures as President/Production. She previously was SVP/Production Paramount Pictures and then Nickelodeon Movies, and began her movie career with Miramax Films, beginning as an assistant and eventually making her way to SVP/Development and Production. At Miramax Raimo-Kouyate worked with Bob Osher, President/Digital Productions, Sony Pictures Entertainment, to whom she will now report. Discovery Networks International (DNI) creates a new production and development unit that will focus on developing global content across the division for Discovery’s networks worldwide, which will be led by Luis Silberwasser under his new title EVP and CCO. Silberwasser will report to Mark Hollinger, President and CEO, DNI.
