Cynopsis: DIGITAL
11/11/11

Good morning, it’s Thursday November 11 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here .

Facebook is finalizing a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over charges that it has used deceptive measures when making changes to its privacy controls and settings. The social network site has agreed to include an opt-in feature for users when making any changes to its privacy settings in the future, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. By needing to receive “express affirmative consent” from a user, Facebook’s ability to get its users to adopt new features could go down, says TechCrunch, as users rarely visit their privacy settings. The agreement will also require Facebook to submit to independent privacy auditing for 20 years, which is similar to what Google agreed to this past March when it came under fire from the FTC for “falsely representing how it would use personal information.”

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Yahoo and Summit Entertainment are teaming up for a multi-faceted digital promotional campaign for the upcoming release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. Yahoo Movies will broadcast a live feed from the film’s red carpet premiere on November 14, starting at 5 pm PT. During the broadcast, fans will be able to submit questions for the stars via Facebook. Leading up to the film’s release, Yahoo’s homepage will feature a countdown clock and exclusive film content. In addition, Yahoo Movies is also enlisting its Facebook page to run a sweepstakes during the first 18 days of November to give away a variety of prizes including a car that is driven by the main character in the movie and tickets to the premiere.

Adobe has decided to discontinue plans to develop the Flash platform for connected TVs and set-top boxes. In a statement to GigaOm, the company said, “We believe the right approach to deliver content on televisions is through applications, not a web browsing experience, and we will continue to encourage the device and content publishing community down that path.” The software company hopes that it can convince developers to build native apps using its Adobe AIR platform.

Spotify users will soon be able to access their playlists on Roku players, reports GigaOm, who reveals that a channel for the music service is close to being launched. This would mark another notch on Spotify’s expansion onto the TV, as it recently unveiled an app for WD TV and Boxee.

McDonald’s USA has launched a Spanish-language Twitter handle @MeEncanta for its Latino fans as it seeks to keep pace with one of the most active groups on social media. The account will deliver news, updates, promotions, info on relevant company initiatives and other content. The handle will be managed by McDonald’s Hispanic PR team, VPE Public Relations, and will also be overseen by the food giant’s communication and social media departments.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Walmart has opened up two temporary Walmart.com stores inside Southern California malls for the holiday season, reports Reuters. It is another example of concept store experimentation from the giant retailer. It also seems to be a shot directed at Amazon as Roger Smead of Smead Capital Management tells Reuters that both companies are headed towards an eventual face-off. “This is the battle of the titans,” he emphasizes. As of now, the plans are for the two small stores to be open between November 1 and December 31.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Amazon has acquired Yap, a company that has speech recognition technology that could serve as a competitive offering to Apple’s Siri, according to AllThingsD. Yap’s servers have been used by Sprint to convert voicemails to text and the North Carolina-based company also had an iPhone app; however, since October 20, Yap has stopped offering the voicemail service, and now seems to be the exclusive property of Amazon.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

The latest SMART report from Millennial Media finds that local market targeting grew 50% quarter-over-quarter, and certain “post-click” options, such as the ability to watch video, grew by 78% in the same timeframe. Other interesting findings from the research include:

  • Local market targeting also represented 66% of all Targeted Audience Campaigns.
  • Campaigns that allowed consumers to view a map grew 27% quarter-over-quarter.
  • Finance was the top U.S. ad vertical on Millennia’s network, up from number 3 in the second quarter and having grown by 356% year-over-year. Meanwhile, Entertainment took the top spot for international ad verticals.
  • Six different ad verticals experienced triple-digit growth, including the aforementioned Finance and B2B-oriented Technology, which grew 687% year-over-year.
  • In Q3, consumers primarily used mobile phones when shopping to search for specific items and to try and find a better price.

A study conducted by mobile ad network Jumptap and comScore took a look at mobile purchases in terms of the percentage of mobile owners who have made a purchase under a certain product category. According to the results as reported on by AdWeek, daily deals and event tickets are tied for the most purchased items on mobile devices as 38% of mobile owners have bought one or the other. Rounding out the top five are apparel/accessories (36% of mobile owners); Travel and physical copies of movies, video games or books (both at 33%); and all consumer electronics except for mobile phones (32%).

A joint study from Yahoo Mobile and Razorfish finds that smartphones are now the most popular home device, and also a growing scapegoat in many social situations. In fact, 52% of respondents indicated that they are likely to use their mobile devices to escape awkward situations, with women more likely to do this than men. Other interesting (and humorous) gender-based findings from the study include:

  • Men are almost twice as likely as women to get in trouble with their significant others for checking sports news on their mobile phones.
  • Young women are the prime demo to browse for info related to what they’re watching, as 65% of female respondents under the age of 35 indicated as such.
  • Men are more likely to use a mobile device as an all-in-one tool, while women are more likely to use it as a social extension to connect with friends.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has teamed up with Technicolor to provide a second screen app experience for fans of Sons of Anarchy. Powered by Technicolor’s MediaEcho platform, the iPad app uses either a Blu-ray player with internet connectivity or audio watermarking technology to sync the tablet with the main screen. The content from the app can be used while watching the show or on its own. The app also provides the ability to purchase show merchandise through an e-commerce marketplace built by Delivery Agent.

Social recipe network Foodily has launched a free app for the iOS. Users will now be able to access to recipes their friends have liked, cooked or recommended; and will also be able to share photos of their own dishes on the network. If a user is at a restaurant, they can also take a picture of a dish, type in a few ingredients and find similar recipes on the web. And finally, the app’s “Yummify” feature enhances photos you take to make the food even more appealing.

With demand for its upcoming Kindle Fire still running high, Amazon has ordered another million units, reports AllThingsD. This order is an addition to the four million Amazon has already requested from manufacturers, and will be released before the end of the year.

BANG! , the popular Western-style card-based board game from DVGiochi, will be available for the iOS, Atom Notebook and the PC starting tomorrow. Users can access any of these platforms to play against their opponents as the game supports up to five players at any given time. The physical version of the family game has sold over 600,000 copies worldwide.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

You ever hear a quote or quip or catchphrase from an announcer and wish you could introduce it during those perfect opportunities in conversations, but alas, your voice just does not stack up? It might be just me, but there’s something to be said about creatively making your friends laugh (or annoying them, depending on the friend). For this, let me draw your attention to a new app in the Apple App Store called Your Personal Announcer. It’s as simple as you’d think; voiced by a professional announcer, the app has stockpiled numerous quotes and one-liners for you to use at your disposal, or as the app says, when you need “the big announcer voice.” Queue them up, create a list of favorites if you like, and go bother your friends. After all, why else have an iPhone? Ahem, don’t answer that.
