Cynopsis: Kids!

05/07/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 7, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

CBeebies is preparing for summer and is looking to get preschoolers up, outside and active with the premiere of two new series (premiere dates are TBA):

  • Mighty-Mites (25×14) – hosted by Sarah-Jane Honeywell and a puppet named Go-Joe, the series aims to encourage kids to try out new activities/sports.  Each episode Sarah-Jane and Go-Joe and two kids head outside the studio/home to try something new, everything from go-karting to flying a kite.  The at home audience is also urged to get involved in various activities and take part in interactive quizzes.  Mighty-Mites is produced by Wish Films.
  • Big City Park (26×15) – set in a pretty and busy park in Belfast, the series focuses on outdoor adventures and discovery of nature in parks through all four seasons, and thus all weather.  Also a mixed live-action/puppet series, the show features a park ranger, caretaker, a streetwise city fox, and badger and lots of storytelling, game play, and imaginative play.  Big City Park is a co-production of CBeebies Scotland and Northern Ireland’s Sixteen South Television.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox is going for the “cold” with a fourth Ice Age movie, Ice Age: Continental Drift, which will be, of course, in 3D, according to Variety.  The Studio has tentatively set the release date for the 3D animated movie for July 13, 2012, which is pretty much smack dab between Sony’s new Spider-Man movie on July 3, 2012 and Batman 3 from Warner Bros. on July 20, 2012.

Tim Gunn, of Project Runway fame, is going to “make it work” on film as he takes on a role Columbia‘s new mixed live-action/animated movie The Smurfs in 3D, per Variety.  Don’t worry – he won’t be one of the little blue folks, not that they aren’t fashionable or anything.  Gunn will play an executive assistant at a cosmetics company in the movie.  Directed by Raja Gosnell and set for an August 3, 2011 release, the cast of The Smurfs movie is chock full of celebrities including Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria, they’ll be in human form, while the voice cast will feature Katy Perry, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Anton Yelchin, Alan Cumming, Jeff Foxworthy, Wolfgang Puck, and the great Jonathan Winters.  Gunn will also appear in the Sex and the City 2 movie, which releases later this month.

Elizabeth Perkins trades Weeds for grass (the kind bunnies eat anyhow).  Perkins who is exiting the Showtime series Weeds after five years, where she played a mom, and has been cast as a mom in I Hop, the mixed live-action/CGI animated feature from Illumination Entertainment and Universal, per THR.  Directed by Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks), I Hop already stars James Marsden as a jobless slacker that accidentally injures the Easter Bunny, who is voiced by Russell Brand, and then must care for him.  Perkins plays Marsden’s Mom.

ContentFilm International acquires the worldwide rights to the mixed live-action/CGI animated feature film The Dog Squad 3D, which will be directed by Les Mayfield (Flubber), per THR.  The project features a script by Steve Carpenter (Blue Streak, The Man, Soul Survivors), and is being produced by Rick Benattar (Ironclad, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Lost Boys: The Tribe).  Production on the kid/family movie begins this summer in Canada.  No word on casting – but there will be a bunch of dogs.  ContentFilm will showcase the movie to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Television International India will launch its new kid/tween-targeted music-driven drama series, Ishaan, on Saturday, May 15 at 10a on Disney Channel, per Business of Cinema.  The series follows the adventures of a boy who makes friends, discovers who he is and a sense of belonging through music, which includes joining a school band.  The series features a soundtrack with 11 original songs.  Created by writer Jaydeep Sarkar and directed by Iqbal Rizvi, Ishaan is produced by the production arm of Red Chillies Entertainment, which is run by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan.

Family Channel (Canada) will premiere the new original TV movie Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam on Friday, September 3 at 8p, the same day and date of the US premiere on Disney Channel.  Ahead of the Canadian debut, Family Channel will debut new music videos, featuring the cast performing songs from the movie, on select Friday evenings beginning tonight.  Additionally, throughout the summer the network will run The Road to Camp Rock 2, offering short behind-the-scenes segments from the movie, including interviews with the cast.

Bob the Builder debuts in China for the first time under a deal with state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), which acquired the series 1-16 from HIT Entertainment.  Beginning this week, episodes of Bob the Builder will air seven days a week (twice daily) on CCTV’s kid-targeted CCTV-Children channel.  Consumer products based on the property will be available in China simultaneously to TV debut, including storybooks, activity books and a monthly magazine from China Children’s Press & Publication Group (CCPPG) and toys from Learning Curve.  Promotional Factory (China) Limited (PPGL) has been appointed as the master licensee for Bob the Builder in China.  Under a previous deal between HIT and CCTV, HIT’s Thomas & Friends has been running on CCTV-Children and CCTV-1 since last year.

MTVN International (MTVNI) completes program sales of several Nickelodeon live-action series across Asia, Europe and Latin America:

  • Digital-Alb (Albania) picks up iCarly and True Jackson, VP
  • iCarly has been acquired by SMG (China), 365 Media (Iceland), TV Seven JSC (Bulgaria), Teletica (Costa Rica), and City TV (Colombia) episodes 1-52, and TV Hondurena (Honduras)
  • Additionally, Mediaset (Italy) takes Zoey 101, and Telelmedi (Georgia) acquires The Troop.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BRB Internacional appoints 4Kids Entertainment as the licensing agent for its new HD animated series Suckers (104×2) for the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland.  The non-verbal short-form comedy is targeted to K6-12 and their families.  Suckers launched Disney XD US in February, and in Spain last month, and will debut on Disney XD channels across the rest of EMEA soon.  4Kids will showcase Suckers at Licensing International Expo next month in Vegas.

DQ Entertainment International (DQE) enters into an exclusive licensing deal for its new animated TV series The Jungle Book with publisher Hachette Livre for French language titles worldwide.  Under the deal Hachette will publish books based on the series in six book categories – storybooks, activity books, novelty books, workbooks and home learning, chapter books/novelization, and ebooks.  Hachette Livre is a unit of Lagardere Media, which in turn is a division of Groupe Lagardere.

A new release for Nickelodeon and new deals for Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP):

  • Nickelodeon releases its new SpongeBob SquarePants app, SpongeBob’s Krusty Komics, for iPhone/iTouch in 85+ countries and featuring digitized and interactive SpongeBob comics and games.  The app offers one comic and one game for download, with additional comics and games available for purchase individually or in bundles.  There are currently a total of 13 comics available in English, German and Japanese, three of which are created exclusively for the app.
  • NVCP enters into a pan-European deal with Holland-based Upper Deck for SpongeBob SquarePants branded Spongi, Upper Deck’s new play compound that bounces, and stretches and can be molded (and dried).  Under the deal the SpongeBob branded Spongi will available in Benelux, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Iberia and the UK from fall 2010.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jimmy Horowitz has been promoted to President, Universal Pictures.  Horowitz will work with Chairman Adam Fogelson, Co-Chairman Donna Langley and Vice-Chairman and COO Rick Finkelstein to craft and implement domestic strategic business initiatives and help manage day-to-day business operations.  He will report to Fogelson and Finkelstein. As President, Horowitz will also oversee Chris Meledandri’s Illumination Entertainment and Universal’s relationship with Relativity Media.  An 18-year veteran of Universal, Horowitz previously served as Co-President/production and EVP/Universal Pictures since 2006.
