The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, gets a director. Lionsgate officially announces director in France Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine, Water for Elephants) as the director of its feature film adaptation of Catching Fire, the second book in Suzanne Collins’ book trilogy. Jacobson’s Color Force is producing the film in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Production is slated to begin this fall 2012, and the film will be released on November 22, 2013. Reprising their roles from The Hunger Games are Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, and Woody Harrelson.

9 Story Entertainment appoints CafePress.com as the official E-commerce partner for its popular animated TV series Almost Naked Animals. The agreement was brokered by The Licensing Shop, and is one of several announcements set to be announced in the coming weeks as 9 Story unveils plans to develop a full digital platform for the Almost Naked Animals’ website for fall 2012. In addition to plans to create the official AlmostNakedAnimals.com store, CafePress.com has already launched a print-on-demand storefront at http://shop.cafepress.com/almostnakedanimalstv, where fans create their own designs on a range of products (e.g. apparel, bags, drink ware, among others).
Turner Broadcasting is set to launch Cartoon Network‘s newest Ben 10 animated series, Ben 10: Omniverse, around the world in fall 2012. Simultaneously, master toy licensee Bandai will launch its Ben 10: Omniverse toy line featuring action figures, role play items, vehicles and play sets due to hit retail this fall.
The Hub will offer viewers a special behind-the-scenes look at Universal‘s upcoming new movie Battleship (PG-13) with the premiere of the new special Battleship: Battle Stations! on Friday, May 11 at 7:30p. The Hub’s half-hour original special is produced by Hasbro Studios. Battleship (www.battleshipmovie.com) opens wide on Friday, May 18.
In other programming news, The Hub will offer a sneak preview of its new action-adventure animated series Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters tomorrow, May 5 8:30a. The series will officially launch on the network on Saturday, June 5, 2012. From Hasbro Studios, Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters is s a re-imagination of the popular Duel Masters property developed by Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. In addition to the animated series, featuring art direction by David Colman, the Kaijudo franchise includes a Battle Game the also debuts tomorrow on Kaijudo.com (www.kaijudo.com), as well as a new trading card game (TCG) that will release this June 26.
Entertainment One‘s animated preschool series Peppa Pig welcomes the Queen of England, or at least an animated version of her, this summer to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This special Peppa Pig episode, entitled The Queen, is the first time that the series will feature a human character. The Queen special episode will premiere in the UK on Monday, June 4, at 8:15a, which this year is the official Jubilee long weekend national holiday, on Channel 5’s milkshake! (UK) block. Also on that day, a Peppa Pig costume character will be in the studio with Jen for a special on-air Jubilee party. This special episode kicks off 13 new Peppa Pig episodes on milkshake! weekdays at 8.15a. The Queen episode will also broadcast on Nick Jr. on June 4 at 6p. Nick Jr. will be celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 60-year reign on-air with a special Princesses Weekend, Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3 from 12-6pm, during which it will feature royal-related episodes of some of its series. Prior to the TV debut, The Queen will be released on DVD on May 21, 2012. Additionally, Ladybird publishes a book based on the episode entitled Peppa Meets the Queen this week. Finally, to coincide with the Jubilee holiday weekend, www.peppapig.com will also feature range of free downloadable party ideas and activities.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) greenlights a third season of the CGI animated preschool series Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Bitty Adventures. The new third season of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Bitty Adventure will include 13 new episodes and is set to debut in spring 2013. The series is currently in its second season on The Hub, where it airs daily.
Teletoon Canada reveals the Canadian launch date for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim is set for July 4, 2012. Support leading up to the July launch will include Cartoon Network programming blocks featured on Teletoon (Canada) on Saturdays (11:30a-1p), beginning tomorrow Saturday, May 5, and Teletoon Retro (Canada) on Saturdays from June 2 (7-9p). Additionally, Teletoon at Night will provide viewers with a weekly Adult Swim block beginning Friday, June 1 (10p-12m). During these promotional blocks: Teletoon (Canada) will showcase The Amazing World of Gumball, Regular Show and Dexter’s Laboratory; Teletoon Retro will feature Dexter’s Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Codename: Kids Next Door, and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy; while Teletoon at Night will feature The Venture Bros., Squidbillies, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
CBBC‘s (UK) long-running series Blue Peter will hit the road later on Saturday, May 26 to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics in the UK. Blue Peter’s Big Olympic Tour will feature live programs (9×30), broadcast from nine UK locations around the route of the Torch Relay, which will be followed by special free public events at those locations. The programs, featuring Blue Peter hosts Helen Skelton and Barney Harwood, and events will be chock full of facts about Olympic sports and interviews and master classes with past and current Olympic stars. There will also be premieres of all new ancient Olympic themed Horrible Histories sketches, celebrity guest stars and versions of some of the famous moments from the modern Olympics. Targeted to kids and families, the local events will be run by BBC Learning and feature a number of activities and the chance to try out some Olympic events, investigate the science of sport, try being a sports commentator, and so forth. Distribution360 has licensed the format rights to the first season (1×26) of its K8-12 targeted physical game show series Splatalot to Dutch pubcaster TROS for its kid’s channel Z@PP. The channel will create a localized Dutch version of the series using much of the original footage from the series and using shooting its own hosted segments, featuring recognized personalities Ron Boszhard and Vivienne van den Assem, to wrap around the existing footage of the castles and defenders. With production underway, the series is set to debut this summer 2012.
