New summer dating series The Choice will debut on FOX with six one-hour episodes starting June 7 at 9p.  The premise of the show has contestants participating in blind auditions before four celebrity judges who are seated in spinning chairs.  The celebrities will audition their potential love interests from among attractive contestants though the network has yet to reveal the celebrities involved.  In a twist, five of the episodes will feature male celebrities with female contestants and one episode will have female celebrities and male contestants.  Cat Deeley is set to host The Choice adding this hosting gig to her current job as host of So You Think You Can Dance this summer.  Mike Darnell and A. Smith & Co. are producing The Choice.

The CW renewed three series for the 2012-2013 season: Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and 90210.  These three dramas join already renewed reality series America’s Next Top Model.  The pickups give Supernatural its eighth season; a fifth season on tap for 90210; and a fourth season for the network’s highest-rated show The Vampire Diaries.

Comedy series How to Be a Gentlemen starring Kevin Dillon and David Hornsby is getting a reprieve from CBS as the network will air back-to-back episodes, #4 and #5 specifically on May 26 at 8p and 830p.  The series originally made its first season debut late last September though posted A18-49 ratings at 33% lower compared to $#*! My Dad Says the previous year.

New wilderness series Mountain Men debuts May 31 at 10p on HISTORY.  The eight-episode series follows Eustace Conway, who has lived more than 25 years off the land in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and other mountain men who have chosen to live off the grid and follow a wilderness lifestyle.  Conway does his own lumbering, tanning and blacksmithing and lives primarily on what he can grow, fish or hunt.  The series also profiles Tom Oar who lives on the Yaak River in Montana and Marty Meierotto who lives in the northern range of Alaska.  Mountain Men is produced by Warm Springs Productions for HISTORY.

On the heels of airing the season one finale of Million Dollar Listing New York on Wednesday, a second season was ordered by Bravo Media.  The finale episode delivered the highest rated episode of the season among all key demos as well as 1.1 million total viewers.  Million Dollar Listing New York is produced for Bravo by World of Wonder.

Later this month, a second season of romantic comedy series Single Ladies, from Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment returns to VH1’s schedule starting May 28 at 9p.  Single Ladies is the network’s first one-hour scripted series and it stars LisaRaye McCoy as Keisha and Charity Shea as April along with new addition to the series, Denise Vasi playing Raquel.  Queen Latifah who serves as EP will also appear on the series.

This Sunday, Smithsonian Channel reveals the inner workings of huge sea vessels when Mighty Ships premieres its second season at 8p.  The six-episode series airing on consecutive Sundays through June 10 explores today’s super ships from major cruise liners to Navy destroyers.

Coinciding with Memorial Day, Lifetime will air new episodes of its docu-series Coming Home, showcasing US armed forces service members’ surprise family reunions.  The show will air on a new day and time, Wednesdays at 9p beginning May 30.

STARTZ hits the high seas by approving a straight-to-series pirate project titled Black Sails (wt) from EP Michael Bay.  The new STARZ Original series centers on Captain Flint and his crew, one of whom is named John Silver, with action taking place twenty years before Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island.  STARZ okayed eight episodes for season one that is slated to premiere in 2014.  Similar to the network’s Spartacus franchise and Magic City, Starz will hold all domestic and international rights to the drama series encompassing television, home video and digital.  Production is set to begin later this year at Cape Town Studios in Cape Town, South Africa.  Bay will serve as EP along with his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.

Two scripted pilots were ordered yesterday by AMC.  The first project is titled Low Winter Sun and is described as a modern-day story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption set in Detroit with the plot revolving around the murder of a cop by a fellow detective.  The pilot is based on the 2006 two-part British miniseries written by Simon Donald and starring Mark Strong.  The original series was produced by Tiger Aspect Productions an Endemol Company and AMC’s version will have Chris Mundy on board as writer, EP and show-runner.  Jeremy Gold, head of creative affairs for Endemol Studios will oversee the project along with Greg Brenman, head of drama for Tiger Aspect.  Project two is referred to as the Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project described as a legal thriller involving political, personal and ethical morals.  The plot centers on a District Attorney who uncovers new evidence that sparks the reinvestigation of a sensational murder case.  The project is from writer/EP Richard LaGravenese (The Fisher King, Water for Elephants).  Tony Goldwyn (Justified, Damages) will direct and be an EP; Andrew Sugarman will also be a co-EP.

Lifetime’s upcoming Original Movie The June Carter Cash Story (wt) tapped singer/songwriter/actress Jewel to play the lead role of June Carter Cash, the legendary country music artist and wife to Johnny Cash (Matt Ross).  The original movie is based on John Carter Cash’s narrative about his mother’s life titled Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash.  The project is produced by Asylum Entertainment and filming begins early this summer in Atlanta and the movie will premiere later this year.

Casting Call:  CENTRIC from BET Networks is hosting auditions for the new original series, Apollo Live.  Comedian/actor Tony Rock is hosting the show which is inspired by the Apollo’s famous Amateur Night.  The show will feature judges including R&B producer/artist Michael Bivins and hip-hop star Doug E. Fresh.  The first auditions will take place this weekend, May 5 and 6 in New York at the Apollo Theater between 8a and 4p.  Other upcoming auditions will happen on May 8 and 9 in Washington, D.C.; May 11 and 12 in Chicago; and May 19 and 20 in Atlanta.  Contestants should visit for the full rules and eligibility requirements.  Apollo Live is a BET Production with EPs Jamie Foxx, Marcus King and Don Weiner.
