ABC News reveals new details in the Alabama hostage case that riveted the nation on 20/20, Friday, May 31 at 10p. ABC’s 20/20 will air the exclusive audio tapes of the confrontation with the bus driver seconds before he is shot; audio of the 9-1-1 call from a student in the back of the bus; and audio of the final ranting phone call from kidnapper Jimmy Lee Dykes as the standoff was coming to its conclusion.
It’s almost time for more ballet drama. The CW Network‘s Breaking Pointe, the docu-series that follows the world of ballet through rehearsals and stage performances, returns on Monday, July 22 at 9p with new dancers and a new production. The second season will focus on Salt Lake City’s Ballet West. Leading the main company, once again, is Artistic Director Adam Sklute, a former dancer with The Joffrey Ballet.
Crown Rules apparently doesn’t! CNBC has pulled the reality series, after its first two episodes drew fewer than 50,000 viewers. The show was hosted by jewelry designer Kendra Scott and NY1 anchor Pat Kiernan.
Industry buzz has been that Disney/ABC might be considering a syndicated talk show led by Robin Roberts, the popular Good Morning America co-host. Roberts, however, has nixed the rumors, insisting there’s no project in development for her or talks taking place about one.
Alec Baldwin will be the on-air host for National Geographic Channel’s weekly Night of Exploration programming block, beginning Friday, June 14 at 8p. Baldwin’s segments will appear in the United States and globally in 171 countries and 38 languages. His hosting duties kick off with new series Crossing the Ice, which follows two Australian adventurers as they attempt to become the first to tackle the perilous journey from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back.
Revision 3 has acquired Internet video icon Philip DeFranco‘s portfolio of online video channels and ventures, DeFranco Creative. As part of the deal, DeFranco will become a member of Revision3’s programming leadership team, serving as Senior Vice President, Phil DeFranco Networks and Merchandise. DeFranco is the force behind such popular shows and channels as The Philip DeFranco Show, SourceFed and The Vloggity.
National Geographic Channel has announced its June to August programming slate, which includes five new series. Battleground Afghanistan (from Markus Vernon Davies; premiering Monday, July 1 at 9p) looks inside the Afghan Conflict through the eyes of the American Marines in Afghanistan. Eyewitness War (from Karga Seven Pictures; premiering Monday, July 1 at 10 and 10:30p) follows the Army, Navy, Drug Enforcement Administration, Coast Guard and other forces through the chaos of battle with first-person footage. Inside: Secret America (from National Geographic Television; premiering Wednesday, July 10 at 10p) explores America’s most controversial issues, from guns to drugs to the paranormal. Inside the American Mob (from Left/Right; premiering Sunday, July 28 at 10p) reveals the capers and cadavers that compose the history of the mob in America. Doomsday Castle (from Sharp Entertainment; premiering in August) focuses on Brent on his 10 kids, who build a castle in the South Carolina woods that will serve as a bunker in case an electromagnetic burst results in a massive power outage.
As of tomorrow, the cable network formerly known as GMC TV (formerly the Gospel Music Channel) will be changing its name to UP. We asked President & CEO Charley Humbard to explain the thinking behind the decision, and the industry feedback so far.
How are you letting your audience know about UP’s new name?
They won’t find out until they turn on the TV Saturday morning. We’ll have a new lower bug on the screen, and the programming guides will reflect that what was GMC and is now UP. We will stress that the programming hasn’t changed.
Why did you feel a change was in order?
We had gotten one-on-one feedback from some advertisers and cable operators that the name wasn’t as clear as it could be. My instincts told me this was a good idea. Nielsen focus groups told us that it tested off the charts. So we felt like it was the right direction.
What’s been the advertiser reaction?
It’s been fantastic. When we presented to MediaVest, they broke into applause.
You have a new World Premiere Movie in July (Saturday, July 13 at 7, 9 and 11 p.m.) called Perfect Summer with Eric Roberts. We heard there was some excitement at the shoot.
Yes; Crew members saw two men who were caught in a rip current. Two of the film’s water safety patrol jumped in and rescued them.
Two years after taking home the Decade of Hotness award at the Guys Choice awards, Jennifer Aniston is set to return to this year’s show as a presenter. Aniston will present the Funniest M.F. award to her pal Jimmy Kimmel. The show tapes on June 8 at Sony Pictures Studio in Los Angeles and will premiere on Spike TV on Wednesday, June 12.
Jennifer Lopez, Executive Producer of ABC Family‘s new original series The Fosters, will participate in a live Twitter chat during the East Coast feed of the series premiere on Monday, June 3 at 9p. Fans are invited to ask Lopez questions about the series via @JLo and should include the hashtag #TheFosters in their tweets.
You still have time to submit to Cynopsis Digital’s Model D Awards, taking place this November, to honor the excellent creators and companies powering the online video content and advertising industries.

Brillstein Entertainment Partners has inked a two-year, first look deal with ABC Studios. The pact comes weeks after ABC picked up the Brillstein/Plan B drama Resurrection for the 2013-14 season. Robin Schwartz, formerly of Regency TV and the founding president of OWN, heads to Brillstein’s TV division as the new president. She replaces JoAnn Alfano, who has been named executive producer on Resurrection.
Animal Planet has renewed its most watched series, ordering a sixth season of River Monsters. The show’s fifth season finale on Monday drew a series-high 2.2 million viewers.
