Cynopsis: Kids!

05/28/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 28, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

HIT Entertainment unveils an internal restructuring into four new divisions falling under two new lines of business, all of which is designed to refocus the business on its brands.  The two new lines of business are Thomas & Friends with the other focusing on HIT Global Brands (e.g. Angelina Ballerina, Barney, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Pingu and Rainbow Magic).  The reorganization will see Peter Byrne, EVP/International Consumer Products and Home Entertainment exit the company. HIT’s Finance, Legal, HR and IT groups will remain centralized staff units supporting both new lines of business.

  • The Thomas & Friends business will comprise three divisions: the NY-based Thomas Americas headed by Pam Westman (which will focus on North and South America); the London-based Thomas EMEA led by Rick Glankler; and the Hong Kong-based Thomas Asia, focusing on Asia including Australia and Japan, which will be headed by Antonio Huab. Westman, Glankler and Huab will all report to Sangeeta Desai, HIT’s COO.
  • The HIT Global Brands business will be managed London-based Jon Owen as one global division.  Owen will oversee staff based locally in NY, London and Hong Kong.  Owen will also report to Desai.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Thomas E. Dooley has been promoted to the newly created position of COO/Viacom.  Dooley, who had been SEVP, CFO and CAO, will continue to report to Philippe Dauman, Viacom’s President and CEO.  Under his new agreement, Dooley extends the term of his deal for another five years taking him through December 2016.  His previous deal was to expire in December 2011.  Viacom’s divisional CEOs will continue to report to Dauman.  Dooley will continue to serve as Viacom’s CFO, a role he has held since 2007, until a successor is named

Classic Media‘s Andrew Kerr, currently EVP/International Marketing & Consumer Products, is set to depart the company to launch his own endeavor.  Taking over the reins from Kerr is Nicole Blake, who has been upped to EVP/Marketing & Consumer Products, which includes the UK and rest of the world.  Kerr, who joined the company two years ago, will continue in his current role through the end of next month, and then serve as a non-exclusive consultant for Classic Media.  Additionally, London-based executives Claire Shaw and Mat Way will increase their responsibilities.  Shaw, VP/Consumer Products & Retail, expands her role to drive all licensing, retail development and promotional activity for Classic Media’s brands in the UK.  Way adds international consumer products to his current global live entertainment responsibility and has been upped to VP/Consumer Products & Live Entertainment, International. Both will continue to be based in London and report to Blake.

Friday Fun Fact:
Q-TIPS Cotton Swabs were originally called “Baby Gays.” In 1922, Leo Gerstenrang, noticed his wife wrapping a wad of cotton around a toothpick for use during their baby’s bath. He developed a machine that would wrap cotton uniformly around each blunt end of a small stick of carefully selected and cured non-splintering birch wood, package the swabs in a sliding tray type box, sterilize the box, and seal it with an outer wrapping of glassine. The phrase “untouched by human hands” became widely known in the production of cotton swabs.
