Cynopsis: Kids!

05/27/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 27, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Turner Broadcasting picks up the UK TV and licensing and merchandising rights for the preschool series Chloe’s Closet from Moonscoop.  In addition to airing around the world, Chloe’s Closet (52×11) is set to debut this summer on Turner’s preschool channel Cartoonito ( www.cartoonito.co.uk  ), which is available in the UK via Sky 619 and Virgin Media 706.  Bandai America has already signed on as the global master toy licensee, and along with its international affiliates will roll out a series of playsets, role-play toys, and activity and craft sets initially in the US, Spain, the UK, France, Benelux and Germany.  Additionally, also on board is Dragon d’Or Editions (Editis Group) to publish a set of small story books in France, joining other licensees for the territory: Sun City (apparel); TM (bags back-to-school and permanent) and Evasion Communication (character costumes). El Ocho has been appointed Spanish licensing agent.  Chloe’s Closet is produced in HD 2D animation by Mike Young Productions, in association with Moonscoop, Wales Creative IP Fund, KI.KA/ARD, Work Out Factory, and Telegael.  The production received funding from European Community “Media 2007” Programme.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Chorion finalizes new licensing and retail deals for Mr. Men and Little Miss in Brazil through its licensing agent in the region Exim Licensing.  New Mr. Men and Little Miss license pacts include: retailer C&A will introduce junior and young adult tops across its 170 stores from the August; beginning this August Foroni will launch notebooks at specialty stores/hypermarkets/small retailers; Duraplast is developing a line of flip-flops for kids/young adults in eight new designs for retailers/hypermarkets this August; in June, Xeryus will debut four new handbag styles for young adults, followed by six new backpacks in August; meanwhile Buba recently introduced a range of collectible figurines at gift shops.  Mr. Men and Little Miss celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, which will also see the introduction of a new character, Little Miss Princess, a new confectionery line, among other things.

Coolabi appoints The Joester Loria Group as the exclusive licensing agent for the preschool property Poppy Cat for North America.  The Joester Loria Group will launch an integrated licensing and merchandising program for Poppy Cat with adventure and fantasy play themed products for North America in categories including toys, games, and apparel.  Based on the books by Lara Jones, this fall 2011 the animated Poppy Cat series will air in the US on Sprout and in Canada on TVO, SCN and Knowledge Network.  The series recently made its international debut on Nick Jr in the UK, and will now begin its global roll out across Australia, Europe, the Middle East and Far East.  Golden Bear is the master toy partner for the property in the UK.

Rocket Licensing launches a new European licensing Dr Seuss campaign at an event at the London Zoo this week, where Dr Seuss Enterprises and UK publishers Harper Collins and Random House also spoke about the brand’s existing success and further potential.  Rocket plans to bring a new focus to the licensing program of the Dr Seuss brand, which will address the cross-generational appeal of creator of The Cat in the Hat and resulting in licenses for young readers and Dr Seuss fans of all ages.  With a plan to have a strong retail presence in 2012, Rocket expects to have new deals in place across a range of categories soon.  Licensees already part of the program include Fabric Flavours, Five Mile Press, Hype and Roger La Borde.

Kid-targeted DVD distributor NCircle Entertainment celebrates its fifth anniversary with plans to launch a new consumer marketing effort next month with the tagline, Entertainment That Educates.  The initiative, which is targeted to parents, caregivers and teachers, will feature the new tagline in all advertising, as well as on its website and on packaging and other materials.  Over the last 12 months, NCircle has released more non-theatrical kid video titles than any other studio, per DVD & BlueRay Release Report.  NCircle recently acquired the rights to distribute the animated short film The Gruffalo, which it will release later this summer, and the domestic distribution rights to the Australian series The Fairies (includes about 80 hours of TV programming and nine direct-to-video specials).
