CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

05/26/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 26, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Nintendo revealed yesterday that the cost of its newly unveiled Wii next-generation videogame console will carry a price tag of less than $250 in the US, which of course is much less than Sony’s upcoming PS3 models ($500-$600) as well as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 models ($300-$400) that debuted in November 2005.  Nintendo plans to ship 6 million Wii systems to retailers worldwide between its 4Q 2006 launch and the end of the company’s fiscal year on March 31, 2007.  Nintendo expects to sell 17 million Wii game titles during this same period, and also projects an 18% growth in global sales for the year, based on continued demand or the DS handheld unit and the Wii console.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Ruff rruf ruf ruf, arf arrrf ruf.  What is it girl? You are starring in a new movie?  Okay, Lassie didn’t really call me but there is a new Lassie movie and it is being released in theaters nationwide by Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films on September 1.  Additionally The Weinstein Company and Genius Products recently acquired the DVD and TV distribution rights for the movie.  Written and directed by Charles Sturridge (Fairytale, Longitude, Shackleton), the new Lassie movie stars Peter O’Toole as the Duke of Rudling, Samantha Morton (Sweet and Lowdown, Minority Report) as Sarah Carraclough, Peter Dinklage (Elf) as Rowlie and Jonathon Mason Lassie’s young owner, Joe Carraclough.  Set in England just before WWII, the movie is based on Eric Knight’s classic story, Lassie Come Home, first published in 1938. It was first adapted for the big screen by MGM in 1943, starring Roddy McDowell as young Joe, along with a tremendous cast including Elizabeth Taylor, Nigel Bruce, Elsa Lanchester, Edmund Gwenn and Donald Crisp and many others.  The Lassie property is managed by Classic Media, which also holds the trademark.

A casting change for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as Helena Bonham Carter takes on the role of The Death Eater. That role was originally cast with Helen McCrory, but she has bowed out due to her pregnancy, according to the web source of everything Potter, The Leaky Cauldron.  In other casting for the movie CBBC Newsround reports that Professor Grubby-Plank will be played by actress Apple Brook, with Jason Piper cast as Bane, the Cenatur.

In other Harry Potter news

  • Bloomsbury Publishing Director, Liz Calder said in an interview with Daily India that, “The next ‘Harry Potter’ book is likely to come out in 2007.”
  • But possibly my favorite Potter story of late is that researchers on both sides of the pond are theorizing and laying out plans for how they might create a cloak that could make one invisible, like the one Harry Potter dons.  In case you are curious it is a unique manmade material that would be used to create such a cloak.  That said, physicists do believe that creating a cloaking device truly is possible.

MTV has tapped Mainframe Entertainment to create the logo, branding and original animated segments for this year’s MTV Movie Awards, which air on the network June 8.  The elements of category intros and opening and closing segments will feature a mix of 2D and 3D animation.  With this project Mainframe takes another step into branding and commercials using its CGI design experience.  Mainframe Entertainment recently entered into a development agreement with The Weinstein Company for the animated feature film Escape from Planet Earth, and is set to release a new animated Tony Hawk feature on DVD with skateboarder this fall.

MORE KIDS STUFF

ESPN Deportes has inked an exclusive deal with the International Domino Federation to televise the annual World Domino Championship as well as national and regional tournaments in the Americas through 2011.  ESPN Deportes aired the 2005 World Domino Tournament, which by the way will run in English on ESPN2 from June 12. The International Domino Federation’s World Domino Championship is scheduled for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2007 and Orlando, Florida in 2008.

DISCOP 2006 is approaching.  Breakthrough Entertainment Inc. has announced its programming offerings at the Eastern and Central European market.  The slate includes Atomic Betty (78×30 and 1×60 – Christmas Special), Cradle of Lies (1×90), War of the Wheels (12×60), Paradise Falls (78×30), Design Match (13×30), Between the Sheets with Rebecca Rosenblat (10×30) and Skooled (16×30).

The animated short form series Star Wars: Clone Wars Volume 1 (chapters 1-20), produced by Cartoon Network Studios, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Director/Animator Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory), debuted on iTunes yesterday.  Star Wars: Clone Wars Volume 2 will be available in late June.  The animated series originally aired on Cartoon Network.

Legoland California will open Pirate Shores, a $10 million expansion, which houses four new water-play related attractions.  Two new rides include Splash Battle, a pirate ship ride that cruises through pirate infested waters and Treasure Falls, a mini-flume log ride.  Additionally, there are two new play areas, Swabbies Deck for little kids features pop-up water jets, fountains and squirt cannons, and the other Soak-N-Sail.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Starbucks Hear Music and Listening Library, Random House’s audiobook imprint, will co-release audiobooks of The Velveteen Rabbit and The Night Before Christmas available at Starbucks stores from August 29 and November 7 respectively.  Out of print for 10+ years, both audiobook titles are narrated by Meryl Street, feature music by George Winston and Mark O’Connor and come from The Rabbit Ears Collection.  Each audiobook will be packaged with an illustrated storybook and will be available exclusively at Starbucks US retail stores and at www.starbucks.com/hearmusic for four months, after which time they will be distributed via traditional retail.  Earlier this year, Listening Library acquired the exclusive world distribution rights for the collection from Rabbit Ears founder/owners Chris Campbell and Mark Sottnick.  The Velveteen Rabbit was written by Margery Williams and The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore.

Saving Shiloh, the third movie based on the book trilogy by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, will be released on DVD this August 22 by Warner Home Video.  The movie is currently being release theatrically in major US cities including NY, LA and Chicago.  The first two movies Shiloh (1997) and Shiloh Season (1999) will also be re-released with new packaging. Additionally, WHV will release The Complete Shiloh Film Collection including all three movies on DVD.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nintendo of America inc. (NOA), promoted three key members of its senior management team.  NOA’s President Tatsumi Kimishima takes on the new role of CEO and Chairman of the Board, Reggie Fils-Aime moves up to President and COO, and Mike Fukuda becomes EVP/Business Development.

  • As CEO and Chairman, Kimishima will oversee the overall management of NOA and continue to serve on the boards of Nintendo of America and Nintendo Co., Ltd.  Kimishima joined Nintendo in Japan in 2000 and first served as CFO, The Pokemon Company and then President, Pokemon USA (2001), and then in 2002 he was named President, NOA.
  • As President and COO, Fils-Aime will head-up the day-to-day operations of NOA and continue to oversee the Sales & Marketing Division as the company prepares for the launch of Wii.  Fils-Aime had been EVP/Sales & Marketing, NOA in the US, Latin America and Canada. Prior to joining Nintendo in 2003, he served as SVP/Marketing, VH1.
  • A 12 year Nintendo veteran, Fukuda will now head-up corporate strategic planning and third-party publisher and licensing programs, while he also continues to oversee product development targeted to the North American market.  Prior to this Fukuda was SVP//Business Development.

Bejuba! Entertainment is expanding its operation by establishing an office in the UK and has appointed Karen Hunter as Head of Sales.  In addition to launching the UK office, Hunter will be responsible for selling Bejuba’s library of properties including Monster Warriors, Amazing Adrenalini Brothers and the new series Ricky Sprocket being produced with Studio B Productions and Snowden Fine, which is slated to bow next year.  Additionally, Hunter will work closely with company President Tatiana Kober in identifying properties to acquire.  Prior to this, Hunter was Deputy Managing Director/International Sales, Egmont Children’s Books and Sales Manager, Strawberry Entertainment.
