Cynopsis: Kids!

5/25/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films have launched three new labels including Kaleidoscope TWC, a kids and family-centric label.  Each of the new labels will focus its efforts on direct-to-video releases, though may occasionally also release a theatrical movie.  The video titles will be distributed by Genius Products, which has a long term deal as TWC’s exclusive home video distributor.  Barry Gordon, TWC’s recently appointed EVP/ Home Entertainment, will oversee the new labels and work closely with the Genius Products team.  Eric Robinson, VP/Production and Development will work with Gordon specifically overseeing Kaleidoscope for TWC.

  • Kaleidoscope TWC will release family friendly movies, for kids of all ages, including theatrical releases, direct-to-video titles, TV series and specials and classic kids and family movies.  The first titles slated for release include: a CG-animated version of The Nutty Professor, featuring voiceovers by Jerry Lewis; Unstable Fables will include CG-animated adaptations of classic kids stories produced by The Jim Henson Company; Hoodwinked 2: Hood vs. Evil; Igor; and Escape From Planet Earth, a CG-animated picture.  The label will offer a conglomeration of new productions and acquisitions, and titles from RHI Entertainment and Classic Media libraries.
  • The Miriam Collection will restore and release classic movies, contemporary classics and foreign films, many of which will include added extras.  The first Miriam Collection DVD release will be El Cid (1961).
  • Dimension Extreme will offer movie releases of horror films, thrillers, sci-fi adventures and comedies of the more bawdy variety

MORE KIDS STUFF

The first of 26 episodes of Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes, a new mixed 2D and 3D animated half hour series, will premiere on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at 9:30p. This is the precursor to the Fox and Marvel Studio’s live-action movie, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which releases June 15.  The new TV series is a continuation of the newly-produced four-episode Fantastic Four show that debuted on Toonami in September 2006, and is a co-production of Moonscoop, M6, Cartoon Network Europe and Marvel Studios.

Disney and CanalSat have inked a deal under which two new VOD channels, Disney Cinemagic and Disney Cinemagic +1 (a one hour shifted channel) in France in September 2007.  A localized version of the UK’s Disney Cinemagic, the VOD service will offer a range of Disney and Disney Pixar movies. Disney and CanalSat are also in discussions to a Disney branded SVOD service that would offer kids programming.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Spider-Man Merchandising L.P. is set to launch licensing and merchandising programs in support of the upcoming Spider-Man animated series, tentatively titled Spectacular Spider-Man, which is slated to bow Saturday mornings on Kids’ WB! on the CW Network in early 2008.  Produced by Sony Pictures Television’s Culver Entertainment, Spectacular Spider-Man picks up the story as Peter Parker enters his junior year in high school, where in addition to dealing with the pressures of homework and a social life he must conceal his identity and newly-found powers.  Spider-Man Merchandising is a limited partnership between Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc. and Marvel Entertainment, Inc.

Ubisoft is developing a video game based on the upcoming Paramount and Shangri-La Entertainment feature-film Beowulf.  Ubisoft expects to release the Beowulf game in conjunction with the movie’s release, which is currently scheduled for November 2007.  Chock-full-o’ celebrities, the movie is directed by Robert Zemeckis, from a Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary screenplay adapted from the epic poem, Beowulf.

New York’s Univision 41 (WXTV) will kick off today its Sal Con Los Solecitos campaign designed to get kids up and out of the house this summer.  Every Friday throughout the summer Univision 41 will host local community events, featuring Salvador (Sal) Cruz, a weekend sportscaster on Univision 41 news, and kid musical group Los Solecitos (the little suns).  The animated Los Solecitos have been featured on Univision 41 for the last several years.  They begin in the morning when they help kid viewers wake-up, and at night they sing them off to bed. Throughout the day the characters encourage kids to exercise in animated musical interstitials.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Tomy Corporation has named Kaz Sugiyama as President.  A 20-year Tomy veteran, Sugiyama most recently served as Tomy’s Chairman in the UK and prior to that was its head of global business in Tokyo.  Additionally, Tomy has upped Laura Yoshioka to Director/Consumer Software Division and appointed Ron Kushner as National Sales Manager.  Yoshioka, who had been Sr. Marketing Manager, will now oversee Tomy’s Consumer Software division including Marketing, R&D, Sales and Operations.  Kushner will head Tomy’s product line, which includes the i-SOBOT.  Most recently, Kushner was National Sales Manager for the US division of Sunco Products.

Arturo Rodriguez has been appointed Atari’s temporary CFO.  Rodriguez, who will maintain his regular day job as VP and Controller, takes on the responsibilities that had been overseen by Bruno Bonnell, Founder and CEO, Infogrames.  Bonnell announced in April that he would exit the company.   The company is actively searching for a permanent CFO.  This move comes as the Board of Directors has given the go-ahead for a restructuring that will result in layoffs.
