Good morning, it’s Friday, May 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

For all of you who TIVO‘d or DVR‘d the final episode of American Idol, Fox apologizes.  The show was originally to air from 8-10p, but being a live event with plenty of unscripted chat, the show ran over and the Idol winner wasn’t announced until three minutes past 10p.  So you recorded all but the big announcement.  Fox wants you to know that was not intentional. 

30.7 million people did tune in for the big finale, and while that’s a lot, it’s down from last year’s Taylor Hicks finale which drew 36.4 million.  The bigger question may be who will sell more records – Jordin Sparks or Taylor Hicks?  Perhaps this is telling – 609 million called in to vote during the course of this season’s American Idol, well ahead of last year’s 578 million voters.  For the final, 74 million votes were logged this year, beating last year by 4 million.

Network Evening News Ratings Update – May Sweep
Winning the May sweep, ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson came in first among total viewers and A25-54. ABC also came out on top among A18-49, W18-49 and W25-54. This makes two sweep wins in a row (Feb & May), something ABC News hasn’t done since 1996. Here is a breakdown for all three networks for the May sweep (4/26-5/23):
ABC: 7.95 total viewers & 2.0 A25-54
NBC: 7.30 total viewers & 1.8 A25-54
CBS: 6.10 total viewers & 1.6 A25-54
 
By taking the action a step further, G4 is launching a new series Cops 2.0, an interactive, updated version of the 20-year old FOX Network show. Cops 2.0 will begin May 29 and air Monday-Friday at 6p. Viewers will see original episodes of Cops with new interactive elements such as live chats, facts and trivia and expert insight into law enforcement lingo and protocol. The show is produced by Twentieth Television.

MTV Networks has advanced Carolyn Everson to EVP/Strategy and Operations, U.S. Ad Sales to manage strategic planning, operations and finance for the company’s state-side Ad Sales division. Based in New York, Carolyn will report to Hank Close, President/U.S. Ad Sales, MTVN.
 
Zuffa, LLC has tapped Michael Pine to be its VP/Sales and Sponsorships for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Based in the company’s Las Vegas headquarters, Michael will supervise all aspects of the advertising and sponsorship business.
 
Jean Wiegman joins GSN as VP/Production to manage all areas of physical production of series and specials. She will also supervise line producers, budgets and production logistics. Jean reports to Jamie Roberts, SVP/Programming.
 
Angie Wingard has been hired by WZRB-TV, The CW affiliate in Columbia, SC as Account Executive.

WEDNESDAY – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX closed the May sweep Wednesday night by winning with an 11.1/30 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC finished second with 4.5/12, and then CBS 2.2/6, NBC 1.8/5, UNIV 1.7/5, CW 0.6/2 and TELE 0.4/1. During primetime’s first two hours, the season finale of American Idol on FOX reined over the competition with 9.6/29 at 8p and an even higher 12.5/31 at 9p. Then at 10p, the last half of ABC’s Lost season finale reeled in a big win with 6.4/17.
