Cynopsis: Kids!
05/21/10
Good morning. It’s Friday, May 21, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
The chase is on … again … for Looney Tunes fastest, and unlucky, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote in three new 3D animated shorts (3-minutes each) for the big screen. Warner Bros. Animation will attach the all-new animated shorts to the top of three of its new family 3D movies this year. The first short will be shown ahead of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, which opens on July 30; the second with Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, opening September 24; and the third with Yogi Bear, releasing December 17. By the way, this is the first time that Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote have been presented in 3D.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
MTV and MGM are joining to co-produce a 1-hour TV series based on the 1985 movie Teen Wolf (12×60). Set to begin production this summer, the new updated thriller/love story Teen Wolf series comes from Jeff Davis (creator, Criminal Minds) and Rene Echevarria (exec. producer, The 4400). The series stars Tyler Posey (Maid in Manhattan, Brothers and Sisters), as the newly bitten werewolf, Dylan O’Brien as his best friend, Crystal Reed as the mysterious new girl in town, and Tyler Hoechlin (Road to Perdition, 7th Heaven) as the older and possibly quite dangerous werewolf. MGM holds the worldwide distribution rights outside the US to Teen Wolf and will showcase the pilot at LA Screenings.
Callan McAuliffe (15) is cast in DreamWorks feature film, I Am Number 4, which begins filming in Pittsburgh next week. Produced by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, and directed by D.J. Caruso, the movie is based on the young-adult sci-fi book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. McAuliffe will play Sam, the best friend of Number 4 that will be played by Alex Pettyfer. The movie is slated for a February 2011 release. Later this year McAuliffe will also star in Rob Reiner’s movie adaptation of Wendelin Van Draanen’s young adult novel Flipped, which Warner Bros. will release on August 6, 2010.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Olympusat‘s Sorpresa, the Spanish-language kid’s channel, and Latele Novela Network, a telenovelas network not aimed at kids, have joined Claro TV‘s basic satellite TV package in Puerto Rico. Targeted to kids/tweens 3-14, Sorpresa aims to entertain, educate, and connect viewers with their Hispanic heritage in a culturally relevant environment. Claro TV is the nest telecommunications product from Puerto Rico Telephone Co., which has 1 million telephone and broadband customers throughout the island.
Looking to battle boredom this summer, YTV (Canada) will launch its traveling interactive road show, Wow! tour ( www.ytv.com/wow ), on Saturday, June 5, and which will make its way across Canada through Labor Day making stops at festivals and attractions. Presented by YTV, Hasbro and Kraft, the tour will feature a range of activities for kids including: Hasbro’s Camp Nerf: Operation Training Day; Hasbro’s Beyblade: Metal Fusion Battle Zone based on YTV animated series Beyblade: Metal Fusion; and Hasbro’s Cuponk, a cup and ball game. Kraft will also be offering samples of its cheese snake Kraft KD Crackers, as well as inviting kids to show off their dance movies and get their picture taken for the Wow! KD Cheesy Wall of fame, which will be posted live on YTV.com throughout the summer. Additionally, the Wow! tour will offer families a sneak peek at upcoming YTV programming.
Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, unveils the release date for the fifth Diary of a Wimpy Kid book will be Tuesday, November 9, 2010. From author/creator Jeff Kinney, the new Wimpy Kid book cover will be purple; the previous covers were red, blue, green and yellow. As for the title … well … we’ll have to wait until July to find that out. The publisher will showcase the book next week at BookExpo America ( www.bookexpoamerica.com ) in NYC, which will include a signing with Kinney on May 27. This summer will see the release of a 16-month Wimpy Kid wall calendar. The second live-action movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, is set to open March 23, 2011.
