Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 20, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Todobebe and Walmart team for a year-round marketing and media initiative targeted to Hispanic moms and families with kids under five across Todobebe, Viva La Familia and Blogs de Mamas properties in the US.  Under the deal Walmart will be the sole, year-round retail sponsor for the Todobebe’s multiple platforms.  The new media relationship will offer content integration, focusing on health, safety, food, child behavior and products, across all Todobebe platforms, including the Soluciones para Mama segment sponsored by Walmart on the weekly TV show, ‘¡Viva La Familia!’ airing on Univision Network. Additional integrations are being developed for moms across Todobebe and Viva La Familia radio, online, events, print, and mobile applications.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Family Channel (Canada) will premiere its new original live-action series Debra! on Saturday, June 4 at 4p.  The series will take up its regular Sunday at 4p time slot the following day, Sunday, June 5, with the debut of the second episode.  The series revolves around Debra, a teen who is on a mission to improve the world through her future business, Big Soaring Pony.  Debra! is executive produced and written by Andrew Nicholls and Darrell Vickers (Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius) and marks Cookie Jar Entertainment’s first live-action series for Family Channel. Stacey Curtis (Naturally, Sadie, The Best Years) serves as co-executive producer and Kevin May (The Latest Buzz, Naturally, Sadie) is producer.

The Hub gives its schedule the summer break once over including special summer holiday marathons of its series, a range of family friendly movies, and a new Saturday Mashup event.

  • The Saturday Mashup will feature original episodes of the network’s series in a special themed lineup in designated, kid-friendly blocks.  A preview of the new Saturday Mashup programming schedule will debut Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 28, 10a-5p, during which The Hub run two back-to-back episodes of each of Hasbro Studios produced series My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, Pound Puppies, and Family Game Night, followed by the already announced three-hour marathon of the first six episodes of the animated series Jem and the Holograms.
  • The network will celebrate the summer holidays with special programming including the Memorial Day day-long Hub of the Brave lineup featuring episodes with heroic acts, and Father’s Day and Independence Day events featuring episodes of GI Joe: A Real American Hero, GI Joe Renegades, Transformers Generation 1 and Transformers Prime.
  • The Hub Family Movie will feature titles including The Iron Giant, Cats & Dogs, 102 Dalmatians, and Gremlins, as well as the network’s world TV premiere of Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove, which stars Bindi Irwin and Beau Bridges.
  • This August The Hub will also premiere new episodes of the Hasbro Studios produced animated series Pound Puppies, featuring the voices of Eric McCormack and Betty White, as part of its Dog Days of Summer programming event that will also dog-centric movies Air Bud, Cats & Dogs and All Dogs Go To Heaven.  The second season of Family Game Night will also debut in August, along with a sneak peek of The Hub’s new original game shoes, The Game of Life and Scrabble Showdown, which will premiere later this year.

Viacom International Media Network (VIMN) inks a raft of deal for Nickelodeon‘s preschool series:

  • Deals for the mixed 2D/3D animated and live-action, math-centric preschool series Team Umizoomi: NTV7 (Malaysia) acquires the new second season of the series, while Group TVA’s Yoopa (Canada) and Teletica (Costa Rica) have picked up seasons 1 and 2 of the Team Umizoomi.  In Europe, TG4 (Ireland) signs on for season 1 of the series as has MBC (Middle East), which broadcasts as part of a Nickelodeon block deal. Also airing the first season of Team Umizoomi as part of its Nickelodeon block is TeleAmazonas (Ecuador).  Hop! (Israel) signs on for season 1 (episodes 1-20), of the series.
  • Four (New Zealand) inks a Nickelodeon package deal that includes re-licenses for Dora the Explorer seasons 1-6, Go, Diego, Go! seasons 1-4, and The Wonder Pets 1-3.
  • HK Medialink (Hong Kong) picks up Dora the Explorer season 4 along with a number of specials.
  • TG4 (Ireland) acquires Go, Diego, Go! episodes 411-420 and MBC‘s Nickelodeon block deal also includes Go, Diego, Go!, Dora the Explorer and The Wonder Pets!
  • MediaCorp okto (Singapore) takes seasons 4 and 5 of Dora the Explorer.
  • Hop! Israel has also picked up episodes 41-60 of Go, Diego, Go! season 3 and renewals on Dora the Explorer episodes 1-20, also from season 3.
  • Latin America preschool renewals and updates for Nickelodeon block deals: FETV (Panama) has signed a renewal on seasons 1-3 of Go, Diego, Go! and a Ni Hao Kai-Lan renewal on seasons 1 and 2; Megavision (Chile) renews its deal for Dora the Explorer; TeleAmazonas (Ecuador) takes season 1 of Bubble Guppies as part of its Nickelodeon block deal; Teletica (Costa Rica) signs on for several preschool animated series for its Nickelodeon package including Dora the Explorer episodes from season 6, Ni Hao Kai-Lan special Princess Kai Lan and Bubble Guppies season 1; In addition, Dora the Explorer and The Wonder Pets continue to air on TV Cultura Brazil; and Dora the Explorer season 3 and 4 continue airing under license with Televisa Mexico.

MARKETING/LICENSING

DHX Media appoints Character Options as its UK master toy licensee for its kid-targeted series Rastamouse, which premiered on CBeebies (UK) in January 2011. Character Options will launch a Rastamouse toy line this October 2011.  The line debuts with plushes followed by a plastic collection of both figures and playsets, with other products in development.

Egmont enters into a multi-territory publishing deal with V & S Entertainment to publish all book formats and a magazine based on the CBeebies HD CGI animated preschool series, Everything’s Rosie.  Egmont is set to launch the publishing line with sticker activity and coloring books and its 10 Minute Tales format this year, followed by a full publishing program in 2012, which includes an Everything’s Rosie magazine.  V & S Entertainment is set to roll out its licensing program for Everything’s Rosie this July 2011, including toys, DVDs, board games, puzzles, apparel, bedding lunchware, bags and accessories.

Kenn Viselman completes a licensing deal with Apra International and Oogielove Movie Merchandise for the family-targeted The Oogieloves.  Under the deal Apra will develop a line of perfumes, bath and beauty aid products for kids, including unique scents based on Oogielove friends, Goobie, Toofie and Zoozie.  The collection will be available simultaneous to the premiere of the new interactive movie musical, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure.  The movie stars Cloris Leachman, Chazz Palminteri, Christopher Lloyd, Jaime Pressly, Cary Elwes and Toni Braxton.

Big Idea Entertainment enters into a licensing deal with Eyes of Faith Optical for a VeggieTales by Eyes of Faith line of kid’s eyewear.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Carson-Dellosa Publishing appoints Linda Koons as SVP/Product and Digital Development.  Most recently, Koons provided independent product development and consulting services to a range of companies and organizations.  She was previously EVP and Publisher of Haights Cross Communications, and held several senior management positions at Scholastic.  Carson-Dellosa is a creator and publisher of educational media.
