opsis: Kids!

05/13/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 13, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon UK will produce a UK version of the reality series, Camp Orange (6×30), which will launch this July as part its summer vacation programming line up.  Focusing on teamwork, friendship, trust and fair play, Camp Orange is based on Nickelodeon Australia‘s Camp Orange format series, currently in the midst of production on its seventh season.  Camp Orange for the UK will be co-produced with Nickelodeon Australia and is set to go into production later this month in New South Wales at a secret location in the Australian Bush, where the teams will have no contact with the outside world.  Nickelodeon UK’s hosts, Jamie Rickers and Anna Williamson, serve as Camp Directors, for four teams of best friends competing in messy and physical challenges that test their brains and friendship.  Denise Lewis, Olympic gold medalist (UK) in the Heptathlon, will join the Camp Directors as a surprise guest who will help mentor the kids and encourage them to stay focused.

MORE KIDS STUFF

American Greetings Properties (AGP) has begun production on season two of the CGI animated preschool series Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures and has inked new international deals for the series.  The new season (13 episodes) of Berry Bitty Adventures is set to debut in fall 2011.  In addition to The Hub (US), picking up the girl 2-5 aimed series is Cartoon Network for Pan-Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and Disney for Latin America and Spain.  AGP has also signed a home video deal with Magna Home Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand.  The series is based on the Strawberry Shortcake property, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Cartoon Network acquires the TV rights to Chinese film studio’s Tianjin North Film Studio‘s $12 million stereoscopic 3D animated movie Legend of a Rabbit for Australia, New Zealand, India and Taiwan, per Variety.  Legend of a Rabbit is slated to release across major Asian markets in late July, with Cartoon Network set to air the movie six to eight months later.

Disney Channel will officially premiere its new series A.N.T. Farm on Friday, June 17 at 8:30p.  The debut simulcasts on Sprint TV and MobiTV, and immediately following its premiere the episode will be available via DisneyChannel.com.  The comedy revolves around Chyna Parks, a middle school musical prodigy that joins the A.N.T. (Advanced Natural Talents) program at a local high school.  Beginning May 27, DisneyChannel.com will launch the A.N.T. Farm super site, featuring the game, Find Your Inner A.N.T., which offers four mini games based on the talents of characters in the series and where users can also test their wits with the Weekly Brain Teaser.  Created by Dan Signer (The Suite Life on Deck, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody) and executive-produced by Signer and Stephen Engel (The Big Bang Theory, Mad About You, Dream On), A.N.T. Farm is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions.  Promotional support for A.N.T. Farm includes:

  • Sunday, May 22  a full preview episode (9:45p)
  • Monday, May 23  a preview episode will be available via Disney Channel on Demand, DisneyChannel.com, and Disney Channel Mobile on Demand, which includes AT&T U-Verse, Sprint TV, Verizon VCast and MobiTV.
  • Tuesday, May 31  the preview episode will be available via iTunes, Sony Playstation and Xbox Live.
  • Friday, June 3  the preview episode will air 9:45p
  • Friday, June 10  the series premiere episode can be viewed on Disney Channel on Demand, including AT&T, Cablevision, TimeWarner and Verizon.

One more reason for your kid to keep hanging onto your iPad.  This week PBS Kids releases its free PBS Kids Video app ( http://to.pbs.org/pbskidsvideoipad  ) designed specifically for the iPad, which provides users with access to 1,000+ videos from PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go! series including Sid the Science Kid, Sesame Street, The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That and Wild Kratts.  The app also offers lots of interactive educational content and tools for parents, such as access to local PBS station TV schedules and additional information about the TV series (e.g. target ages, learning goals etc.), and social network sharing opportunities.

Apple made the decision to pull iAd advertisements served in the kid-focused iPhone app Dex ( http://clickablebliss.com/dex/ ), described by developer ClickableBliss as a Pokemon browser. (The app sources data from popular online pokedexes including Bulbapedia, Serebii, Marriland and Smogon.) “Currently, our advertisers prefer that their advertising not appear in applications that are targeted for users that are young children, since their products are not targeted at that audience,” Apple’s iAd Network support explained to ClickableBliss as posted in a blog post ( http://blog.clickablebliss.com/ ).

Cartoon Network launches its augmented reality (AR) application for its animated series Generator Rex in Asia.  Kids can reach the AR 3D game, which allows kids to test themselves for “nanites” (in the series they invade every living being), in two ways, either log onto the Cartoon Network website or via the Cartoon Network Facebook page to start “the scan”.  Users can then share their videos on YouTube or Facebook.  Total Immersion developed the Generator Rex AR application.  In Asia Pacific the application is available online now ( www.cartoonnetworkasia.com), and is planned to further extend on mobile and on-the-ground over the next few coming months.  Augmented reality is the term for a camera-enhanced view of a physical real-world environment, where virtual elements are merged with the real-life scene, creating a mixed reality of virtual elements and the real world. Users of Cartoon Network’s application will need a computer, webcam and speakers.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Coolabi completes several deals for two of its properties.

  • Coolabi has inked an outerwear deal for Poppy Cat with Silver-Knit (dresses, skirts, tops, trousers and knitwear). The new apparel will launch across the UK and Ireland in 2012.  This comes on the heels of last week’s appointment of Golden Bear as master toy partner for Poppy Cat, simultaneous to the show’s debut on Nick Jr UK.
  • For the tween/teen girl-targeted Scarlett & Crimson, Coolabi signs a license deal with Beauty Works for electrical beauty accessories (hairdryers, straighteners, manicure sets, mirrors and clocks).  Scarlett & Crimson continues its existing hair and beauty products deals with Rudolf Stein, Grace Cole, SLG Beauty and Japonesque.  Additionally, Wild Pumpkin is appointed as licensing agent, representing all licensing and merchandising for the property, across Australia and New Zealand.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Penguin appoints Graham Sim as Creative Director/Penguin Children’s Division UK.  Sim will lead the kid’s marketing and publicity team and work closely with editorial group on brand strategy for the division.  He is charged with shaping the creative direction of specific campaigns, as well as creating new connections with readers and exploring new business models to strengthen the division’s position.  Additionally, Sim will work on Penguin’s new transmedia strategies.  Sim will report to Penguin UK CEO Tom Weldon and Penguin Children’s MD Francesca Dow.  Sim, who joins Penguin in July, is currently Group Marketing Director at HMV.  Prior to that he was Group Marketing Director for Monsoon and Accessorize, and held senior marketing positions at Jaeger and Viyella, Mulberry and Clarks Shoes.
