Cynopsis: Kids!
03/09/12

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 9, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Nickelodeon has announced the launch of a new comedy-driven animated shorts initiative. Designed to expand on Nickelodeon’s animated comedy development slate and a new opportunity to work with new talent, the network will solicit ideas from in-house and outside talent, including artists, designers, writers and directors. In some cases, select comedians will be teamed with creatives on these new shorts. Those who want to participate in the new animated shorts program can find out more at www.nickshortspitches.com. Some things to keep in mind, Nickelodeon is looking for original, funny and character-driven (featuring one or two characters) shorts, for all animation styles and techniques (2D, digital 2D, stop motion, CG or mixed media). The deadline for entries is March 30 at 6p, PT. The animated shorts will be produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California.

MORE KIDS STUFF

News for Harry Potter fans! Pottermore.com (www.pottermore.com), the online Harry Potter experience announced in summer 2011 by creator/author J.K. Rowling and Sony promptly went into Beta with an original plan to launch in full in October, will finally debut for all fans in early April 2012. Addressing the much delayed launch, the Pottermore editor explained in the posted announcement that through feedback from Beta users, “… it became clear that our original platform wouldn’t be suitable when millions more users came on to the site. So we made a big decision: to move Pottermore to an entirely different platform set up.” The change, which will be “invisible” to users, will include the addition of exclusive content and other features, such as sounds, to Pottermore.com. Pottermore.com is expected to exclusively sell the eBooks and digital audio Harry Potter Books, as originally announced last year. There are no dates so far as to when the eBooks and digital audio books will be available for purchase.

STONE SOUP

In an effort to help bridge the “app gap,” PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) join together in a unique collaboration to provide free educational apps to Head Start centers, local PBS stations, and other groups in underserved communities nationwide. The preschool aimed apps will be downloaded onto devices that families have access to at their local Head Start centers and other community organizations. This first-of-its-kind collaborative outreach effort is part of the Ready To Learn Initiative, an early learning effort led by PBS and CPB with funding from the US Department of Education. The first apps as part of this initiative are All Aboard the Dinosaur Train! for iPad and Dinosaur Train Camera Catch! for iPhone. The apps are based on the PBS Kids series Dinosaur Train series produced by The Jim Henson Company, and are designed to help K3-5 build critical math skills. Released this week by PBS Kids, both Dinosaur Train apps are also available at the App Store (USD $1.99/each). Recent research (www.commonsensemedia.org/research/zero-eight-childrens-media-use-america) has shown there to be an “app gap,” due to the fact that “access to computers, smartphones and tablets is much less prevalent in lower-income households, limiting children’s exposure to educational apps.”
