Good Morning, it’s Friday, March 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
In a move which was anticipated for weeks, DirecTV has made a seven-year $700 million dollar rights deal with Major League Baseball which will give the satellite operator carriage rights to the MLB Extra Innings out-of-market subscription game package. The agreement further gives DirecTV a minority ownership in the upcoming MLB Channel which will debut in 2009. Other cable operators, as well as EchoStar Communications, can still sell the Extra Innings package to their Pay TV customers if they also agree to launch MLB’s new cable TV network on their basic tiers. However, the price is considered prohibitively high for operators with much smaller footprints. If no other operators decide to offer Extra Innings, then DirecTV will have the exclusive rights.
Tonight’s Season Finale:
NBC: Las Vegas at 9p
USA Network has picked up the cable television rights to the 20th Century Fox film Borat. As reported by Variety, the deal is for a five year term, and a fee of $11 million. The film will first be available to USA in April 2009. 20th retained the right to sell a window to another cable network during the USA term.
As anticipated, CBS News has named Rick Kaplan as the new Executive Producer of CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Former exec producer Rome Hartman will be reassigned within CBS News.
Bravo will bring back Work Out for a sophomore season beginning March 20 at 11p. The series looks at the personal and professional life of Jackie Warner, owner of Sky Sport & Spa in Beverly Hills as well as her hard-working staff. Then starting March 27, the eight-part one-hour docu-series will settle in its regular time period on Tuesdays at 10p. Work Out, produced by Mentorn USA, was nominated this year for a GLAAD award for Outstanding Reality Program.
MTV will debut its latest reality series Taquita & Kaui on April 2 at 1030p. The girls, who met on MTV’s Making the Band 3 series, became best friends and now live together in Las Vegas where they hope to find fame and riches. Episode guides and photos can be found at MTV.com and previews of the show’s trailer will appear on MTV Mobile and VOD. The series is produced by Ted & Perry Company and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Betting that the real estate bubble will stay intact, A&E Network has reupped its series Flip This House for a third season starting March 31 at 9p. Each hour-long episode follows the teams that buy homes for renovation and resale in Connecticut, San Antonio and Atlanta. The series is developed for A&E by Departure Films.
Hallmark Channel has just received a boost in its national distribution to more than 80 million subscribers. Crown Media Holdings, Inc., the network’s owner and operator, has signed a new multi-year deal with EchoStar Communications Corporation for sustained distribution on the DISH Network for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel. Hallmark Channel will now be positioned on the DISH Network’s AT200 package starting next month, and the Hallmark Movie Channel will rest on DISH Network’s AT250 package increasing its distribution to more than 5 million subscribers.
And after many requests, Cyn opsis Weekender College Edition is coming back! We did this once before in November 2005 and it was wonderfully successful, so we’ll do it again on April 26, 2007. We will accept 350 word editorials from current college students all around the country and the world. The four most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written pieces will be included in a future edition of Weekender , and each winning editorial will be awarded a prize of $350. College Professors, moms and dads – encourage your students to participate! Showtime has ordered a fifth season of The L Word from Little Chicken Inc., and it’s scheduled to make its debut in early 2008.

In this new position, Scott will be responsible for editorial content for Moviefone.com and television.aol.com in addition to other features, franchises, awards information and other original content.
