Good morning. It’s Friday, March 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Alloy Digital, the digital media company that owns and operates top YouTube channels such as Smosh and Clevver TV, has landed $30 million in a Series A investment from ABS Capital Partners. “This funding will allow us to rapidly add relevant properties and talent appealing to the tastes and shifting consumption behaviors” of consumers aged 12-34, said Matt Diamond, CEO of Alloy Digital. And cultivating the younger crowd is crucial. “These kids are growing up as a generation that has never known traditional TV like their parents. They don’t know what it’s like to wait around until 8 or 9pm to watch something, and that changes their behavior. Now, you want media on your terms and on the platform that you’re comfortable with.”
Alloy also says it will also invest in product development and other tech advancements. Alloy’s YouTube channels reach 12 million subscribers in total.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Live daily show What’s Trending is partnering with Samsung for the second year in a row to provide streaming coverage of SXSW Interactive  which starts today – from the Samsung Techset Blogger Lounge. Daily programming, which will run on YouTube from 1pm to 6pm ET, will feature interviews with celebrities such as Shaq, Jeremy Lin, the cast of Yahoo’s Burning Love, Fred Armisen, Marc Maron, Charlie Todd of Improv Everywhere, and Randi Zuckerberg.

Time Warner Cable’s TV Everywhere app, TWC TV, is now available on Roku devices. The app currently offers authenticated access to 300 live TV channels. Time Warner says support for features like on-demand and subscription content will be added later this year. The app is available for all Roku devices, except for the Roku 1.

Amazon Studios, the production arm of Amazon, has green-lit a test pilot for Sara Solves It, an original children’s series co-developed by WGBH and Out of the Blue Enterprises. Created by Emmy-winner Carol Greenwald (Arthur, Curious George) and Emmy-nominee Angela C. Santomero (Blue’s Clues), the show will follow a brother and sister as they try to solve mysteries “that spring from the questions young children encounter in their daily lives.” Each show will feature interactive math-based puzzles that viewers can solve alongside the characters. This brings Amazon Studio’s test pilot program to 12, all of which will be available on Prime Instant Video for users to watch for free and give feedback. The feedback will help Amazon determine which shows get picked up for full seasons.

The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) has unveiled a new section to its annual festival program called Storyscapes. The section looks to celebrate new trends in digital media and “recognize filmmakers and content creators who employ an interactive, web-based or class-platform approach to story creation.” Curated by the TFF Programming team, Storyscapes will present five selections via an interactive installation at the Bombay Sapphire House of Imagination in NY, from April 19 to 21. The five selections are: A Journal of Insomnia; Robots in Residence; Sandy Storyline; Star Wars Uncut; and This Exquisite Forest. Duopoly has launched a new comedy series, House Sitters, on the iThentic YouTube channel and on Funny or Die. Starring Canadian comedians Mark Little and Morgan Waters, the show follows two “hapless co-habitants” who decide to start a housesitting business together. Created by Mark Satterthwaite and comprised of 18, five-minute episodes, the show is currently competing for Independent Production Fund financing in Canada. In Canada, Hollywood Suite has licensed a 90-minute version of the show, while iThentic will distribute the episodic version.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Video ad tech start-up Innovid has raised $11 million in Series C funding from Sequoia Capital, Genesis Partners, and T-Venture. New investor Vintage Investment Partners also contributed to the round. The new funds will be used to support the company’s existing video ad serving capabilities across PCs, smartphones, and tablets, as well as to expand to new screens such as gaming consoles, connected TVs, video-on-demand, and broadcast TV. Innovid offers a range of tools to create, deliver, and measure video ads, from pre-rolls to interactive units. The company was one of the winners of the recently announced IAB Digital Video Rising Stars, and its video ad server is currently being used by the companies including Toyota, Sony Pictures, T-Mobile, and Best Buy. The Series C round brings the start-up’s funding total to $27.6 million.

Epoxy, a video start-up that builds “tools for professional video channels and networks,” has received $2 million in funding led by GRP Ventures. Other investors include Greycroft Partners and Allen DeBevoise of Machinima. The company offers tools that help online video channels optimize publishing in order to grow audience, boost engagement, and drive monetization. They’re meant for the YouTube original channel programmers, multichannel networks and “the digital divisions of Hollywood Studios and brands that utilize video channels.” Epoxy will use the funds to expand its engineering team and continue building its product suite.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

TubeMogul is now offering advertisers the ability to programmatically buy interactive video ads for smartphones and tablets. With access to mobile video inventory from numerous private and public ad exchanges, the company says its media-buying platform for video ads now features 94.4 million pre-roll impressions per day for smartphones and tablets in the US. All the video ads appear as full-screen units, and can appear before a video, when the app is launched, or in-between game levels. On the interactive front, marketers will have the option to add buttons such as “Click-to-Download,” “Click-to-Calendar,” “Click-for-Showtimes,” and “Click-for-Location” to drive engagement.

CoxReps, the national ad sales arm of Cox Media Group, is realigning its Cox Digital Studios (CDS) business and partnering with data-driven multi-screen ad solutions company Collective to better reach consumers across devices. Going forward, CDS will discontinue its legacy network platform business and focus on premium local solutions and audience-centric advertising. CoxReps’ partnership with Collective will provide the sales org with a nationally scalable ad platform to reach audiences via data-driven video, mobile, rich media, and display ads. These are apparently just the first steps in what CoxReps says is an expected “transformation” in the way its business units deliver personalized ad experiences. FYI: “We’ve seen an industry shift toward converged solutions,” said CoxReps President Jim Monahan. “We plan to be one step ahead of that trend.”

NY-based digital media consultancy Prohaska Consulting is partnering with VeNA to help US businesses manage their digital video investments and inventory in the Asia-Pacific region, where VeNA operates a premium video ad and technology network.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

EXPO, a video platform that allows brands to distribute product videos across brand-owned, social, and retail websites, has signed an expanded agreement with CPG company Reckitt Benckiser Group (RB). Per the deal, RB is bringing five additional brands (Cepacol, Clearasil, Delsym, Rid-X, Veet, and Mucinex) to the EXPO platform, for a total of 11. To date, EXPO has collected 785 independent consumer review videos for RB. These videos are accessible via more than 100 point-of-purchase product pages on the websites of big retailers like Walmart, CVS, Target, and Walgreen’s.
