Good morning. It’s Friday, March 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
CBBC orders up two new seasons (24×30) of its original kid’s series The Sarah Jane Adventures, a spin-off of Doctor Who. Created by Russell T Davies and featuring one of Doctor Who’s most famous companions, Sarah Jane Smith, The Sarah Jane Adventures is produced by BBC Cymru Wales. The fourth season of the series, again starring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane, is set to premiere this fall 2010. The series heads back into production in Cardiff later this month, with producer Nikki Wilson stepping up alongside Davies as executive producer and new producer Brian Minchin joining the team. The fifth series will go into production in 2011 for air later that year.
Disney-ABC International Television (DAIT) Asia Pacific inks a multi-year deal with PT Media Nusantara Citra Tbk (MNC), an Indonesian media company, to distribute Disney animation, preschool programs, live action series and original movies on MNC’s two national free-to-air TV networks, RCTI and TPI, across Indonesia. Under the deal Disney’s programming will run in four branded kid/family-targeted program blocks. RCTI will start airing Disney Clubhouse, a 90-minute, weekly preschool animation block, beginning Saturday, March 6, 2010, featuring shows such as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Einstein’s and My Friends Tigger & Pooh. The channel will also air Disney live-action series including Hannah Montana (season 1) as well as its original movies like High School Musical (the first one) over the coming months. TPI premiered in a 2-hour marathon of Disney Club on February 14, 2010. The Disney Club block, targeted to K5-14, airs in the afternoons. RCTI and TPI reach 50+% of all homes in Indonesia.

Peep and the Big Wide World, the animated preschool science series, will be available to Spanish-speaking and bilingual preschooler for the first time when it debuts weekday mornings on V-me ( www.vmetv.com ) beginning this month (Monday-Friday, 9:15-9:30a). Peep is produced by WGBH and 9 Story Entertainment in association with TVOntario and Discovery Kids. A Spanish section of the Peep and the Big Wide World ( www.peepandthebigwideworld.org) is launching simultaneously. The site will offer animated Peep stores and related live-action videos featuring real kids playing the real world, as well as providing additional online educational activities and the like in Spanish for parents and caregivers. Major funding for Peep is provided by the National Science Foundation, with additional funding is provided by the Northrop Grumman Foundation.
MarVista Entertainment acquires the worldwide distribution rights to the feature film Mandie and the Secret Tunnel, which is based on Lois Leppard’s kid-targeted novel of the same name, from Lost World Pictures. Under the deal, MarVista will license the rights to movie worldwide, and also maintains the option to acquire the remaining four movies for which Lost World’s Producer/Director team Owen Smith and Joy Chapman own the rights. The second movie in the series, Mandie and the Cherokee Treasure, is currently in development and will be completed this year. Mandie and the Secret Tunnel will debut to the international market at MIPTV. By the way … there are 40+ titles in the Mandie book series, which are set in the early 1900s and follow Mandie on her mystery solving adventures with the her friends and cat Snowball.
The new animated series Pink Panther & Pals will premiere on Cartoon Network this Sunday, March 7 at 7:30a. Co-produced/co-financed by Rubicon Studios and MGM, this is the first new Pink Panther TV series in 17 years. Each half-hour show is comprised of 2×7 episodes featuring a teenage Pink Panther and his friends, along with one short of the classic Ant & the Aardvark characters. Pink Panther & Pals is based upon the animated Pink Panther character created by David DePatie and Friz Freleng and the Pink panther films of Blake Edwards.
Turner Broadcasting inks an exclusive three-year deal for the rights to Tiger Aspect‘s animated series Mr Bean (26×30) for its Boomerang channel in the UK. In the animated series the great Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as Mr Bean. Created by Atkinson and Richard Curtis, the Mr Bean character of TV/film/cartoons celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Mr Bean is produced by Tiger Aspect in association with Richard Purdum Productions and Varga Holdings.
The Jonas Group, which represents the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and Jordin Sparks, enters into a partnership with the American teen musical group Savvy. Under the deal, The Jonas Group will guide the careers of the six-member Savvy group, whose new TV series, The Wannabes Starring Savvy ( www.thewannabes.tv ), premieres on ABC3 (Australia) this Sunday, March 7 at 7:10p. The 26 episode series, which follows the ups and downs of six high school kids at an upscale performing arts school with each episode featuring an original Savvy music video, is expected to subsequently rollout in other countries. The TV series is produced by Ron Stern and Christine LeMaire of Stern-LeMaire Productions.

Stone American Licensing announces that Alexander Doll Company (Madame Alexander Dolls) is named as the exclusive manufacturer for StinkyKids ( www.stinkykids.com ) soft-bodied dolls. Alexander Doll Company’s immediate plans including expanding the current StinkyKids line at FAO Schwarz, Nordstrom’s and Nordstroms.com for summer 2010. It will also extend the program to additionally specialty, mid-tier and mass retailers for holiday 2010. Launched in Q4 2009, the StinkyKids are a collection of 10 diverse characters that learn about making good choices by making mistakes.
Ty Inc, the folks behind Beanie Babies, names Animax Entertainment to manage the online efforts of its Ty Girlz brand. The partnership launches this week with a new online ad supported “freemium” free-to-play model in the kid/tween-targeted virtual world ( www.ty-girlz.ty.com ), which features new virtual goods, games and activities and support for a micropayments and new loyalty program. Additionally, original entertainment, licensed merchandise, online media and extensions to mobile devices and other social network platforms will also be implemented. Since the Ty Girlz brand launched in spring 2007 with tween-targeted fashion dolls and a virtual world, the line has expended to three dozen dolls and apparel, accessories and pet product lines.
Scholastic is launching a new Clifford the Big Red Dog publishing program to support its Be Big campaign, which encourages kids to make the world a better place by following Clifford’s Big Ideas (share, play fair, have respect, work together, be responsible, be a good friend, help others, be truthful, be kind and believe in yourself). Ten Clifford titles by author Norman Bridwell that correspond with each of the ten big ideaswill be re-packaged and reissued beginning in May 2010. The first four titles to be released in summer 2010 include Clifford the Big Red Dog, Clifford Goes to School, Clifford the Firehouse Dog and Clifford’s Good Deeds. Followed in fall 2010 by the release of Clifford’s Family, Clifford at the Circus and Clifford’s Manners, and in spring 2011, Clifford’s Birthday Party, Clifford Takes a Trip, and Clifford’s Day With Dad. An additional twelve readers and eight board books will be released over three years with newly added Be Big branding. Clifford is celebrating its 10th anniversary on PBS Kids this year.
