Cynopsis: Kids!
03/30/12

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 30, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Nelvana acquires Chorion‘s Silver Lining Production Limited‘s interest in the preschool property Max & Ruby. Nelvana now holds the complete worldwide TV production and merchandise licensing rights to the brand. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Max & Ruby features a popular book series by author/illustrator Rosemary Wells, and an animated TV series based on the books. The Max & Ruby TV series can be seen in the US on Nickelodeon and in Canada on Treehouse, with new episodes currently in production. Max & Ruby DVDs from Nickelodeon Home Entertainment have sold 2.9+ million units in the US, and KOBA Entertainment recently completed a North American tour of the Max & Ruby live show.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Turner Broadcasting commissions a new mixed live-action and animation series Team Toon (26×30), which it is co-producing with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and Larry Schwarz and His Band for Cartoon Network EMEA and Asia-Pacific. Targeted to K6-11, Team Toon follows the toon-infused adventures of Dylan, Sam, Iko and Ash, the creators of an animated online series called Psycho Squirrel, which plays at the start of each episode. When trouble strikes they let their imaginations run wild as Team Toon, racing around in their trusty talking Animobile solving mysteries and battling evildoers, they blur the line between reality and cartoon. FME will manage the worldwide distribution of the TV series (outside of EMEA and Asia-Pacific) and will also handle all global ancillary rights. Team Toon joins FME’s portfolio of kids’ properties that currently includes CGI animated action-adventure series Max Steel, the tween-targeted live-action comedy Really Me, and hybrid concert footage, live-action sketches, and animated series The Aquabats Super Show.

Canada’s Breakthrough Entertainment options celebrated author Margaret Atwood’s storybook book series Wandering Wenda & Friends, which it will develop as an animated preschool series. Breakthrough acquired the option to the storybook series from Toronto-based publisher McArthur & Company. Atwood has penned 40+ books, including fiction, poetry, and critical essays, as well as kid’s books.

Teletoon Canada and Radical Sheep Productions enter into a development deal for a new animated comedy based on the book Bagel’s Lucky Hat by the noted cartoonist/fine artist Dave Cooper (a.k.a. Hector Mumbly). Aimed at K8-11, The Bagel and Becky Show is an 11-minute comedy that follows the adventures of Bagel and Becky, a brother and sister who happen to be a dog and a cat.  Each day Bagel and Becky leave home  but rarely end up where they were headed. The series is being developed by Radical Sheep producer Michelle Melanson and creator Dave Cooper in association with Jam Filled Entertainment (Camp Lakebottom, Crash Canyon).  Ken Cuperus (Mr. Young, My Babysitter’s a Vampire), Adam Rotstein and Doug Hadders (Sidekick, Almost Naked Animals) are attached as showrunners/writers. Look for Radical Sheep at MIPTV next week.
