Good morning. It’s Friday, March 2, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
The Hub (www.hubworld.com) TV network unveils its 2012-2013 programming slate, which includes four new original series, eight returning original series, and new acquisitions. Heading into its second year, The Hub is targeted to kids and their families and continues its strategy to present series based on well-known names and popular properties in the world of kids and family entertainment. New series headed for The Hub, as well as acquired programming and new episodes of returning series include:
- Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot – this new CGI animated series is produced by American Greetings Properties and will launch this summer 2012. Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot is set in the whimsical world where the Care Bears help kids navigate their feelings through music, love and belly-badge powers, not to mention big Care Bear hugs. This year marks the 30the anniversary of the Care Bears property.
- Littlest Pet Shop (26×30) episodes of this new animated comedy are scheduled to premiere in Q4 2012. The Littlest Pet Shop revolves around the life of Blythe and the adventures of the pets she cares for. The series is produced by Hasbro Studios.
- Kaijudo: Raise of the Duel Masters (26×30) produced by Hasbro Studios, and set to premiere this summer 2012, this new animated action/fantasy follows Ray, a young hero who has the ability to befriend and duel alongside fantastical creatures from a parallel dimension. Kaijudo: Raise of the Duel Masters features the voices of Scott Wolf (Party of Five), Freddy Rodriguez (Ugly Betty), John DiMaggio (Futurama, Pound Puppies) and Phil LaMarr (Mad TV). The series is based on a re-imagined version of the popular Duel Masters property in Japan by Wizards of the Coast (Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons) and Hasbro.
- Spooksville (half-hour series) This new live-action series from Producer Jane Startz, is based on the tween-targeted book series by Christopher Pike. Spooksville follows the new kid in town who discovers that he holds the key to a battle between good and evil, which has been in motion for centuries in a bizarre small town that is home to a range of unexplained occurrences. Spooksville will launch in Q4 2012.
- The Hub has also acquired the popular live-action series The Facts of Life from distributor by Sony Pictures Television, and Mork & Mindy and Sabrina The Teenage Witch, both from CBS Television Distribution. All three comedy series are slated to join The Hub’s programming schedule in Q2 2012.
- The network welcomes new episodes returning series including: The Aquabats! Super Show! – new episodes premiere March 3, the series is produced by FremantleMedia Enterprises and The Magic Store; Dan Vs. the series is produced by Film Roman in association with The Hatchery; Family Game Night, produced by Hasbro Studios; My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, produced by Hasbro Studios; Pound Puppies, produced by Hasbro Studios; R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series, produced by Front Street Pictures in association with The Hatchery; Secret Millionaires Club, a Hub original special produced by A Squared Entertainment; and Transformers Prime and Transformers Rescue Bots both from Hasbro Studios
LICENSING
2-dream Licensing enters into a deal with TogetherPlus for the Luv Me Buddies brand. TogetherPlus will manufacture and distribute a line of collectable figurines (10 cm) based on the Luv Me Buddies and Luv Me Baddies series of characters, created by Lavish Rights. The deal covers all European territories, with products set to be available at retail in 2013. 2-dream and Lavish will make their first appearance at Brand Licensing Europe 2012, in London this fall 2012.
Turner Broadcasting Systems (TBS) and YahLive, a United Arab Emirates (UAE) based satellite broadcasting company, enter into a deal to launch Cartoon Network Arabic channel in HD via YahLive’s satellite service. The deal will make the Cartoon Network Arabic channel available in Arabic to viewers in the Middle East and North Africa regions. The deal was inked during CABSAT, a Middle East digital media and satellite market held this week in Dubai.
Viacom International Media Networks inks Canadian broadcast deals in English and French-speaking territories for Nickelodeon properties. Telequebec picks up Nickelodeon’s preschool series Go, Diego Go! and Dora the Explorer. It has also completed second renewals on Go, Diego Go! season 2 as well as Go, Diego Go! The Great Dinosaur Adventure Special and Go, Diego Go! Safari Rescue Special. For Dora The Explorer, Telequebec has signed on for five specials including Dora The Explorer Pirate Adventure and Dora the Explorer Dances to the Rescue. Vrak TV picks up SpongeBob SquarePants season 1 and Victorious season 1, as well as HD season 1 of Victorious, Big Time Rush season 1, iCarly season 2 and episodes from season 3, Victorious season 2 and movies Best Player and The Boy Who Cried Werewolf. YTV signed on for House of Anubis seasons 1 and 2. and Nickelodeon movies Best Player, Boy Who Cried Werewolf and Fairly Odd Movie, while TVA/Yoopa picks up season 1 of Bubble Guppies and seasons 1 and 2 of Team Umizoomi.
Zinkia Entertainment and Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Net (HITN) enter team for a Ready To Learn (RTL) nationwide education partnership that will feature Zinkia’s property Pocoyo (www.pocoyoworld.com) as basis for the English Language Learning (ELL) component of Project LAMP. Through this partnership, HITN will bring Pocoyo to a series of tablet, smartphone and cloud-based programs designed to help preschool kids develop critical literacy skills in English. By focusing on English Language Learners whose primary language is Spanish, HITN aims to reach an audience of kids that have been traditionally underserved. This initiative is in keeping with the mission of the US Department of Education’s Ready To Learn program and its Project LAMP (www.projectlamp.org) effort, which supports the development of educational television and digital media targeted at preschool and early elementary school kids and their families, specifically looking to reach low-income kids and close the “achievement gap.”

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP) appoints Bettina Arff as its new Licensing Director overseeing Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Arff, who will be based in Berlin, will work to develop and maximize category expansion and property management for Viacom International Media Network’s portfolio of family-targeted entertainment franchises including Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants, as well as the music-based live-action property Victorious. Arff will work closely with NCP’s retail department. She will report to Andreas Niedergesass, VP/Nickelodeon Consumer Products North. Most recently, Arff was with Endemol where she served as Sr. Manager Business Development for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Eastern Europe. Prior to that she was Sales Manager GSA for Fremantle Media.
