Cynopsis: Kids!
03/26/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

It is official The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort ( www.universalorlando.com) will open its doors to the public on June 18, 2010.  Based, of course, on JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books and the movies, the attraction invites visitors to explore Hogwarts Castle and its many nooks and crannies, including Dumbledore’s office, Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom (where you get to meet Harry, Ron and Hermione), Gryffindor common room, and the Room of Requirement.  Fans will also get to fly with Harry over Hogwarts, get into a Quidditch match and more with the three distinct areas within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter:  Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (the central area and the beginning of the visit); Flight of the Hippogriff; and Dragon Channel.  The new Potter attraction is described as a “360-degree theme park experience” that combines “live-action, advanced robotic technology and innovative filmmaking,” for the adventure.

Nickelodeon will present the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, with the Big Help Award during Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards tomorrow (8-9:30p).  The award recognizes the First Lady for the work on her recently launched Let’s Move! ( www.letsmove.gov ) initiative, which encourages kids and family to make healthy lifestyle choices and combating childhood obesity.  The award is designed to recognize people that look to better the world, and whose impact on their community inspires kids to get involved as well.  This weekend also marks the launch of Nickelodeon’s The Big Help  “Millions on the Move” the 2010-11 campaign to inspire a kid-led movement of positive change.  The efforts is broken down into four specific areas and time periods for action that will be supported by the network and offer messaging to kids: environment (April-May 31, 2010); Health and Wellness (June 1-September 25, 2010); Education (September 7-December 10, 2010); and Community Service (December 11, 2010-March 26, 2011).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Mattel is developing a new ocean dwelling alien civilization themed toy line that will simultaneously be developed as a feature film, according to New York Magazine’s Vulture blog.  Mattel selected the property from five different projects developed by its designers as potential concepts that could be adapted as a TV series, movie or game.  Mattel has also partnered with producer Neal Moritz (the Fast and Furious franchise, I Am Legend, among many others), and are now seeking screenwriters for the project.

Paul W.S. Anderson will direct a new 3D feature film version of the classic character Buck Rogers, which became hugely popular in 1950s, from a script by co-writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man), per VarietyParadox Entertainment, which is planning a Conan movie as well, will produce the movie.  Paradox together with Incognito Entertainment and Randall Emmett/George Furla Productions acquired the rights to the property from the Dille Family Trust.  Producers on the movie include Lawrence Abramson, Jeremy Bolt and Fredrik Malmberg, with Furla, Anderson and Flint Dille serving as executive producers.

Angela Bassett will play government agent Dr. Amanda Waller in Warner Bros.‘ feature film Green Lantern, per Variety.  Based on the DC Comics series, the Green Lantern cast already features Ryan Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong.

Clarification: The reality series, Mystery Hunters, has also been running on Discovery Kids since June 2003.
