Good morning, it’s Friday, March 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The jury is still out on whether or not users will be willing to pay to subscribe to e-magazines and newspapers in high volume, but advertisers are already placing bets on Apple‘s iPad. Major brand advertisers including Toyota, Unilever and Fidelity have bought units on iPad apps launching on April 3 from Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and Time for rates ranging from $75k to $300k, per the NYTimes. The paper says the WSJ app is slated to cost a handsome $17.99/month, compared to its current offer of $1.50/week or $6/month for its iPhone app.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced funding for a major journalism initiative designed to increase original local reporting capacity in seven regions around the country. The centers, to be based in the Southwest, The Plains, Upstate New York, the Upper Midwest, Central Florida, the South and the Northwest will form teams of multimedia journalists, who will focus on issues of relevance to each region. Reports will be presented regionally and nationally via digital platforms, community engagement programs and radio and television broadcasts. 
 
Discovery’s Planet Green destination is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 by highlighting innovators at the forefront of the sustainable living movement. In addition to new on air programming throughout the month, including new documentary The Age of Stupid starring Pete Postlewaite, TreeHugger.com will honor “green heroes” who have dedicated their lives to advancing environmentalism.
 
ESPN launched its 5th local site near its own backyard, ESPN New York, featuring a daily localized online version of SportsCenter. Yankees fans may want to try out a new app that allows you to build an historical dream team cherry picking players from each era. An ESPNNewYork.com mobile web extension can also be found at http://espn.mobi/ny. Former New York Daily News and Newsday Sports Editor Leon Carter is managing the site.
 
YouTube superstar Fred will star in a made-for-TV movie on Nickelodeon produced by Brian Robbins’ Varsity Pictures and written by David Goodman (Family Guy), per Variety.
 
Fireworks International has acquired the multiplatform rights for youth-targeted SciFi thriller Valemont from MTV Networks International, with plans to distribute the series across MTV and Viva channels in more than 150 countries online and linear. The deal includes rights to the show’s 35 short form episodes, an Alternate Reality Game, prequel episodes and extra videos for online, plus 5 half-hour episodes and a 100-minute TV movie.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Indie online video portal Blip.tv says its has doubled its video views to 85 million in the past year and managed to attract a plethora of brand advertisers with its new interactive ad formats, per Videonuze.
 
Video site Dailymotion debuted a new Slideshow editing tool that allows users to create video messages, greeting cards, invites or presentations from still photos they upload. The template allows you to choose different borders, add music and view the results immediately.
 
Revision3 has picked up a second season of Texas geek show Web Zeroes.
 
San Francisco-based anime site Crunchyroll has received a $750k strategic investment from Japanese network TV Tokyo, a supplier of licensed content to the site.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
New media producers EQAL (lonelygirl15, Harper’s Globe), has partnered with Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Paula Deen launching a Real Women of Philadelphia online community and cooking competition. Contestants are encouraged to submit videos of themselves cooking dishes in 4 categories using Philly Cream Cheese to compete for a trip to Savannah, GA.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Google continues to lose Chinese partners after its decision to divert search traffic from mainland China to Hong Kong. Media company TOM Group Ltd., popular Chinese portal Sina Corp. and online forum Tianya.cn have announced plans to stop using Google search on their sites.
 
Microsoft has completed an integration with location service Foursqure. Users will be able to use Bing Maps to see where their friends are checking in on Foursquare as well as what badges they have accumulated. (“Badges? We don’t’ need no stinking badges.”)
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
As DVD revenues decline studios are seeking new platform to replace their chief bread winner but a single robust revenue stream is unlikely to emerge, according to the new Online Video Now report from N.Y.Times Co. subsidiary Baseline Research. Instead, studios should begin to cultivate revenue from a number of new categories, which will collectively help make up for the decline including Streaming to PC, VOD to PC, Live Streaming, and Set top Box-based content delivery. The report profiles 20 major players in these 4 major distribution areas, examining strategy, milestones and long-term prospects. For instance, live broadcasting service Ustream may be best served by purchasing acquiring a high-value content producer to help bring brand advertising into the fold.
 
Apple’s App Store is the clear leader in preferred mobile app stores in the U.S. and, combined with the dedicated AT&T Application Store, devices running on the AT&T network have the most popular stores, according to Nielsen‘s new App Playbook report. Smartphone users were generally using applications more than feature phone users – only 12% of feature phone owners have downloaded an app in the past 30 days while 46% of smartphone owners have ­ with app usage driven mostly by the iPhone and Android devices. The App Store and the Android Market Store also led in terms of consumer satisfaction. Feature phone users have downloaded an average of 10 apps vs. 22 apps for smartphone users. Interestingly, BlackBerry users have only downloaded a total of 10 apps on average.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Netflix has begun distributing free discs enabling Watch Instantly movie streaming from broadband-connected Nintendo Wii consoles. Users will have to load the disc each time they would like to download a movie (selected through Netflix’s online interface.) Also, the Wii will not support HD streaming.
 
Verizon Wireless confirmed plans to open a V Cast Apps store on March 29, launching with about 300 apps from multiple third party developers, the cost of which will be added to users’ monthly phone bills. Verizon also completed its integration with Skype, enabling users to place Skype-to-Skype voice calls for free and receive unlimited instant messages with other Skype users from across the globe over the Verizon Network.
 
The PeeWee Kit is a new $30 USB software bundle that child proofs any computer. Customized for low-cost netbook computers, the USB drive loads age appropriate entertainment and educational software, games, and a security suite into a child’s computer to accommodate Pre-K, Early Elementary, and Upper Elementary levels.

Ad agency Media Storm has hired former Carat New York executive Jeremy Cornfeldt as Managing Director/Digital, a new position. He will report directly to Media Storm’s co-founders and Managing Partners, Craig Woerz and Tim Williams.
 
Meredith Corporation has upped Lee Slattery to VP, Publisher of Fitness magazine. She will continue to be based in Meredith’s New York office.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
The web has long been a place to indulge in guilty pleasures so it makes sense that Spike TV’s Ultimate Fighter franchise now has a proper home online. The network has relaunched a new ad-supported site at UltimateFighter.com, combining elements formerly available on UFC.com and Spike.com and offering full episodes of the reality show/mixed martial arts competition for the first time online. In addition to Facebook and Twitter integrations and weekly video previews, fans will have access to 10 past seasons of bone-crunching episodes for free, (although they will have to wait for the upcoming season 11 to end before being able to view new episodes.) Following on the heels of SouthParkStudios.com and ColbertNation.com, the robust cable TV video site is the latest example of MTVN building out its businesses online without worrying about cannibalizing its core product. A collective realization seems to have been reached that additional platforms only serve to whet the appetite of hardcore fans – assuming Viacom can reap a full share of the ad revenue. (Daily Show and Colbert episodes were recently pulled from Hulu when MTVN’s contract with the joint venture came up for renewal.)
