Good morning. It’s Friday, March 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Upfront 2011:  THE HUB

The Hub announces the programming lineup for its 2011-12 season, which includes nine new original programs and ten returning series for a total of 425×30 new production.  New programming includes the kid music competition series, Majors & Minors, which promises a recording deal with RCA/Jive for the winner, Secret Millionaire’s Club, four animated specials featuring Warren Buffet’s voice as a business advisor to kids from A Squared Entertainment, The Aquabats Super Show is a music-based series from the creators of Yo Gabba Gabba, and several shows based on Hasbro properties.  Additionally, The Hub has acquired Mark Burnett’s series Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader from Twentieth Television.  The Hub, a joint venture between Discovery Communications and Hasbro, is a kid/family network that launched in October 2010 taking over channel space previously held by Discovery Kids.  The Hub is available in 60 million US cable and satellite households.  The Hub’s new and returning series/specials for 2011/12 include:

  • The Aquabats Super Show  an original offbeat comedy about the adventures real life band The Aquabats (they have five albums in release).  The series mixes concert footage, live-action skits and animation, as the Aquabats use their music and powers to go up against evildoers.  FremantleMedia and The Magic Store produce the series.
  • Blythe Loves The Littlest Pet Shop  also an original animated series based on Hasbro’s Littlest Pet Shop.  Produced by Hasbro Studios, the series revolves around Blythe, who moves to the city and finds that her apartment is where the neighborhood pets come to play when their owners are away.
  • Clue  an original live-action miniseries based on Hasbro’s game Clue.  The series follows six teens brought together when they believe they’ve witnessed a terrible crime.  Working together as a team, the teens uncover and try to solve age-old conspiracy theories and cover-ups.  Clue is produced by Hasbro Studios.
  • The Game of Life  a live-action original family game show based on the board game.  Hosted by comedian Frank Nicotero (co-host of The Sharon Osbourne Show, Street smarts, and Yahoo! TV’s Primetime in No Time), the series is produced by Hasbro Studios.
  • Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Master (working title)  the original animated program is based on the trading card game Duel Masters, and follows a 14-year-old boy who discovers a secret world where creatures with special destructive powers rule.  The boy must master his abilities in the ancient art of Kaijudo to save both their world and his.  The show is produced by Hasbro Studios.
  • Majors & Minors  the original realty competition series pits 16 young musical performers against one another to ultimately win a recording contract.  Experienced music industry artists will mentor each the contestants throughout the series.  Contestants will not be voted off the show.  Mentors include Leona Lewis, Jordin Sparks, Sean Kingston and Ryan Tedder (of One Republic). From Evan Bogart (who has penned songs for performers including Rihanna and Beyonce), and producers Tim Bogart and Gary A. Randall, the series is produced by The Boardwalk Entertainment Group in partnership with Sony Music’s RCA/Jive Label Group and BMI.
  • Rescue Bots  the original animated series is inspired by Hasbro’s Transformers brand, features a group of Autobots, who are too young to work alongside Optimus Prime and his group, are teamed with a human family of first responders.  Rescue Bots is produced by Hasbro Studios.
  • Scrabble Showdown  based on Hasbro’s Scrabble, the new game show features families working together to solve various word games and puzzles.  Hosted by Justin Willman (Hubworld, Cupcake Wars), the live-action series is produced by Hasbro Studios.
  • Secret Millionaire’s Club (4×30)  the new series of animated specials is based on the kid-targeted webseries of the same name that ran on AOL a few years back.  In the specials, Warren Buffet is a secret advisor to a group of kids trying learn about business and the world around them.  Created in partnership with and voiced by Buffett, the series is produced by A Squared Entertainment and Andy Heyward.
  • The Hub’s returning series, with new episodes, include: The Adventures of Chuck & Friends; Animal Mechanicals; Dan Vs.; Family Game Night; My Little Pony Friendship is Magic; Pound Puppies; R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series; Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures; Transformers Prime; and The WotWots.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Abrams publishing unveils Appleseed Books, its new imprint that will offer books for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers (kids birth-5 years), which is set to launch in spring 2012.  Appleseed Books will publish between 8-10 titles each season in a range of formats for younger kids including board books, novelty books, and young picture books.  The imprint’s titles will include a mix of original books, imports, and branded series.  Cecily Kaiser is Publishing Director, Appleseed Books.  The Appleseed Books imprint joins Abrams’ Abrams Books for Young Readers (school-age kids) and Amulet Books (older kids and teens).

The third season of preschool series Waybuloo will premiere in the UK in the Cbeebies Bedtime Hour on April 4, at 6p.  Waybuloo is produced by The Foundation, part of Zodiak Kids, and Decode Entertainment for the BBC.  Zodiak Kids, the kid’s production/distribution unit of Zodiak Media Group.

Moonscoop completes signed a TV deal with Channel One in Russia for the preschool series Chloe’s Closet and Dive Olly Dive 2.  Chloe’s Closet is produced in HD 2D animation out of Moonscoop’s LA office in association with Wales Creative IP Fund, KI.KA/ARD (Germany), Trickompany FilmProduktion (Germany), European Film Partners, and Telegael (Ireland).  Dive Olly Dive! is a co-production of Mike Young Productions Limited (MYP), Flying Bark Productions (Australia), KI.KA/ARD (Germany), Telegael Teo (Ireland), Atlantyca Entertainment (Italy) and GDC (China).

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) inks deals for two Nickelodeon TV movies, Gym Teacher and Spectacular!, with Vrak TV (Canada).  Additionally, MTVNI will be at MIPTV where it will launch three new TV movie titles for international syndication: A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner!  A mixed live-action and CG animated TV movies based on Nickelodeon’s animated series The Fairly OddParents starring Drake Bell (Drake & Josh), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), and Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm); Best Player  a new live-action TV movie starring Jennette McCurdy and Jerry Trainor (both of iCarly); The Boy Who Cried Werewolf  a live-action TV movie starring Victoria Justice (Victorious) and Brooke Shields.

Indie distributor Echo Bridge Entertainment will launch the 10th season of Degrassi (44×30 or 22×60) next month at MIPTV 2011 in Cannes.  Season 10 of Degrassi shifts to a new telenovela-style format.  The season hit new series and network highs for the for TeenNick in the US and Much Music in Canada.  Broadcast premiere partners include ABC Networks, Nickelodeon (Australia and New Zealand), Much Music (English speaking Canada), VRAK TV (French speaking Canada), Direct Star (France), IBA Broadcasting Authority (Israel), Noga Communications (Israel), LAPTV (Spanish speaking Latin America), Globosat (Brazil), Canal+ Cyfrowy (Poland), TV Norge (Norway), Kanal 5 (Sweden), Antena 3 (Spain), and worldwide through the US Military on the AFN (American Forces Network).

Beyond Distribution heads to MIPTV where it will introduce its new K4-7 targeted live-action series Tati’s Hotel (26×15). A comedy, Tati’s Hotel is described as Faulty Towers for young kids and features Tati, an 8-year-old girl who welcomes all sorts of guests to her magical hotel.  The TV series is produced by Machine Productions in the UK and Screen Door Productions in Canada. Tati’s Hotel is commissioned by and set to launch on ITV Breakfast and CITV Channel in May and September respectively.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Toys “R” Us stores nationwide will introduce the exclusive Rio merchandising program beginning this April.  The line of products is based on the upcoming 3D animated comedy adventure movie Rio, from Fox and the makers of the Ice Age movie franchise, which opens April 15, 2011.  Together Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, Toys “R” Us stores and Toysrus.com/RIO ( www.toysrus.com/rio ) will offer consumers a first look at the family-targeted movie through a range of movie-based products including: toys from ToyQuest (poseable mini figures, plush pals, talking plush, beanies among others); a Rio video game for Xbox and Wii from THQ releases April 12  consumers buying the game then will receive a special limited edition DVD featuring never-before-seen sneak peeks at the movie, with a PlayStation 3 version of the game coming with a free Blu-ray version of the special content and featurettes; in the book publishing category the retailer will offer storybooks from HarperCollins, color and activity books from Modern Publishing, and a Look-and-Find book from Publications International; Toysrus.com/rio will also launch a microsite featuring movie trailers and exclusive downloadable coloring pages from the Modern Publishing coloring books.

BabyTV enters into a license deal with Ansaldo, an importer/distributor of licensed products for infants and toddlers, for Chile and Peru.  As a BabyTV licensee, Ansaldo will develop products including nursery toys and games (e.g. play gyms, mobiles, rattles, soft cubes, block and stacking toys), as well as melamine products and sets and other accessories, such as bibs, teethers, and night-lights.  The first products are set to launch in Q4 2011. This deal with put together by BabyTV’s agent P&L Global Network Corp.
