Cynopsis
03/24/06
Good Morning. It’s Friday, March 24, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The WB‘s newest drama series The Bedford Diaries hasn’t even debuted yet, and it’s already gathering attention for potential indecency. Following a handful of very expensive FCC fines levied last week, The WB has asked producers Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana and Julie Martin to cut two scenes from their final cut of the show, set to debut on Wednesday night at 9p. One of the scenes features two girls kissing, the other a girl unzipping her jeans. The WB has said it is reacting with “an abundance of caution” in asking the producers to re-cut the show. Levinson says he doesn’t blame the network and says “… the network is very fearful of what the FCC has been doing recently. They’re intimidating the networks and levying these fines, so the networks are not sure of what they can or can’t do.” The WB has put the full un-cut episode on its website, where you can see it now.
Tonight’s Finales:
WB: What I Like About You at 8p, and Living with Fran at 830p
* MORE GOOD STUFF *Joining the NBC schedule on Thursday, June 8 at 10p is the drama series Windfall starring Luke Perry, about 20 people who jointly win a $386 million dollar lottery, and how they subsequently deal with their new found fortunes. Windfall is from Regency Television and executive producer Laurie McCarthy.
Rumors abound of a new daytime talk show for Buena Vista Television with Patricia Heaton and three other ladies, discussing home and hearth, rather than topical news of the day. The show would be targeting the morning time period between BVT’s Regis & Kelly at 9a and The View at 11a. Heaton is also cast in a comedy pilot for Touchstone and ABC, and if it gets picked up along with the daytime syndicated series, she plans to do both.
Fox has ordered up a second season of Bones from 20th Century Fox TV, and has given it a 22 episode order. Other series also upped for next season include House, Family Guy, The Simpsons (of course) and King of the Hill.
Speaking of the Simpsons, if you’re a fan of this show – make a note: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson are coming to life when a new live-action main title sequence is unveiled on The Simpsons, this Sunday at 8p on Fox. The classic Simpsons opener remains the same in every detail, down to the couch gag closer, but performed by real actors who want people to think they look like the Simpsons. The live action opening comes from a British team commissioned by the UK network Sky One as part of its p.r. campaign for the show.
Millions wanted to find out if Chef was really back on South Park Wednesday night. The 10th season premiere at 10p on Comedy Central finished as the number one ad-supported basic cable show of the night with a 2.2 A18-49, and 2.3 million A18-49 viewers. It was also the top-rated show on the network so far this year among A18-49. With South Park as its lead-in, the season premiere of The Mind of Mencia at 1030p was the #2 show of the night on basic cable, earning a 1.4 A18-49, with 1.4 million viewers.
CBS and Yahoo! Inc. are partnering to bring 60 Minutes video content and news packages to Yahoo!’s media properties. The content will be available this fall on Yahoo’s News, Sports and Entertainment sites, as well as on a newly created “microsite” on Yahoo! dedicated to 60 Minutes. Starting Sunday, get a free preview of the video, featuring an interview with Tiger Woods.
Following in the steps of Tribune Broadcasting and Raycom Media, Sinclair Broadcast Group has now signed to carry The Tube Network Television on its 58 stations beginning this summer. The Tube provides stations with music video programming, which the viewer may chose to purchase either thru the station’s website or by telephone.
* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Three unscripted projects on the CBS development slate you may not have heard of before:
- Reality series The Jokes on You with Wayne Brady is a hidden camera series, from Pottle Prods and Hallock and Healey Entertainment.
- Guess Who’s Coming Over is similar to the trading wives idea, only this is a family who will host a polar-opposite guest for a period of time; from Endemol US
- Tuesday Night Book Club is described by the network as a docu-soap where women come together once a week for their book club and chat about their lives. This one could make it to the CBS schedule by this summer. The project is from Jay and Tony Prods and Pottle Prods.
Casting notes …
CBS‘ drama project Shark from Spike Lee has added Jeri Ryan to the cast that stars James Woods. Ryan will play Woods’ boss. Shark is from 20th and Imagine.
And CBS has signed Tom Cavanagh for its comedy pilot My Ex Life in the lead role; project is from 20th.
Casting Call: Contestant submissions are open now through April 20 for Above the Line: America’s Next Music Video Director. The show’s winner will get to shoot a music video for a major recording artist and a one-year contract with a music video production company. All 14 contestants will live together in the Hollywood Hills from May 20 to August 20. More information can be found at www.nextmvdirector.com.
Maybe that casting call doesn’t suit you … how about this one?
Casting Call: NorthSouth Prods is looking for a guy, between the ages of 25-35, who is not only intelligent, attractive and athletic, but also has martial arts skills and some on-camera experience. The gig is to host a documentary travel series. They need you to send a tape, and if you don’t have one, then get your camcorder out and tell/show them your hosting skills and talk about your martial arts skills. Then send it asap (must get there before March 29), along with a headshot and resume, to: NorthSouth Productions, Attn: Casting, 134 West 26th Street, Ste 710, New York, NY 10001. Questions? casting@northsouth.tv. Good luck!

1989 – The Exxon oil-tanker Valdez runs aground in Alaska’s Prince William Sound. Within a few days it spills 11 million gallons of oil into the sound. In January 204, a federal judge orders Exxon to pay $6.75 billion in punitive damages and interest to the 32,000 fisherman, landowners, municipalities, and small businessmen affected by the spill. Exxon Mobil vows to appeal.
