We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

The Hub is adding four new series and two original movies, and renewing nine shows for the coming year. The net’s new programming lineup takes it further into live-action waters. On the slate are the new original-to-The Hub Spooksville, another “spooky scary” entry for the network based on the tween book series from Christopher Pike; and popular U.K. adventure-fantasy Wizards vs Aliens, from executive producer Russell T. Davies, of Doctor Who and Torchwood fame. Rounding out the new additions are animated Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch, voiced by Ashley Tisdale, and the acquired series SheZow, about the superheroics of a thrill-seeking boy. Also coming down the pike are two original animated movies: Stan Lee’s Mighty 7, starring the legendary superhero creator himself, and Transformers Prime Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising, which wraps up the series’ final chapter.

While not an entirely new tune for the network, Sprout is making a push into music like never before beginning with the Monday (25) debut of Sing It, Laurie! The animated musical preschool series was co-created by children’s recording artist Laurie Berkner and Little Airplane Productions’ Josh Selig. The series also stars Grammy-nominated recording artist Lisa Loeb, who performs the roles of twin sisters. Sprout is also introducing a variety of music videos into its afternoon block, 12-4 p.m., featuring other popular children’s artists and will launch a music microsite on SproutOnline.com where preschoolers and their families can watch full-length videos and play games on a special video player.

Programming Picks

In its own Upfront of sorts, CBeebies has announced two new series-its first game show and a groundbreaking new show about starting school-plus the return of several of the network’s most popular shows. Swashbuckle is a new pirate adventure offering where participants seek to return precious jewels stolen by pirates by playing physical games. Time For School is a live-action look at real children as they start readin’ and writin’ for the first time, following them through their first days in documentary style. Also returning to the channel are Gigglebiz with a third series, and an eighth season of Nina And The Neurons, focused on science.

Free on-demand kids network Kabillion on April 4 will launch the original animated series The DaVincibles. Season one includes 26 half-hour episodes, which will also debut throughout Kabillion’s online network. “The in-your-face, quirky, comedy adventures of the The DaVincibles is the perfect complement for our online program offering,” says Shea Fontana, director, digital media at Kabillion.  Produced entirely in hi-def 2D Flash animation, The DaVincibles is a co-production of Kabillion parent Moonscoop, Zodiak Active, Rai Fiction, SLR Productions, Telegael, Big Animation, Verve Communications, Agogo Entertainment, and Top Draw Animation.

Hallmark Channel yesterday unleashed its plan to gather the family at holiday time. The network will debut its first-ever original holiday movie, “Christmas With Tucker,” starring James Brolin, as part of its new Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas franchise.

9 Story Entertainment’s new animated comedy Camp Lakebottom is getting some international exposure. The series has been acquired by Canal+ for Canal+Family (France), Teletoon+ (France), ABC (Australia) and Noga (Israel). Produced by 9 Story for Teletoon Canada, the series also has been licensed to Super RTL (Germany) and Luk International for Spain and Portugal.

Digital Update

As the name might imply, Oceanhouse Media’s latest Dr. Seuss digital book app I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today! and Other Stories features some zany tales–three of them in fact. Available for iOS and Android at $3.99, the app includes the title story, King Looie Katz and The Glunk that got Thunk.

The Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network’s (HITN) Early Learning Collaborative is releasing two new tablet-based Pocoyo PlaySet apps designed to help preschoolers develop English language, reading and math skills. The mission of this project is to help close the achievement gap between economically advantaged and disadvantaged children. The apps, featuring popular international character Pocoyo, were developed in partnership with Pocoyo creator Zinkia Entertainment and funded in part through a Ready to Learn research grant from the U. S. Department of Education.

Trends & Research

Just how much violence is in the television programming we consume? On Wednesday, The Parents Television Council released answers to that question through a one-month study it conducted from Jan. 11-Feb. 11, 2013 of all primetime broadcast programming. During the study period, PTC examined 392 shows and reports that 193 contained violence and 121 shows contained violence and guns.
“The results of our research demonstrate that Hollywood continues to be deaf to the cries for ending a media culture awash in blood,” said PTC president Tim Winter in a statement. Winter said CBS, CW and Fox had the highest percentage of programs with gun violence at 54%, 48% and 29%, respectively. 

Prime Time for mobile: Consumers are not only watching more TV in primetime: it’s also when they spend the majority of their time playing mobile games and social devices via their devices, weekdays from 8-10 p.m. According to a new study by Arbitron Mobile during fourth-quarter 2012, five activities dominated weekday smart-phone usage: voice calls, messaging, browsing, social networking, and gaming.

Lisle International will tout its property The Trash Pack directly to parents at the consumer Mums Show Live, May 16-19 in the U.K. Lisle is teaming with web site UKMums.tv to exhibit a selection of the licensed collection, and talk up recycling as a lead-up to the launch of a summer marketing campaign for the property, including a fully branded activity on UKMums.tv for National Recycling Week June 17-23.

Totally Spies is getting the royal treatment for the kickoff of its sixth season. Marketing partners Marathon Media, TF1, Hachette Jeunesse and Paperbox Magazine are hosting a press junket May 29 at none other than Versailles.
