Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Friday, March 21, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Disney Channel will premiere Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream, a short-form reality series about the Jonas Brothers band from spring 2008.  Living the Dream will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Jonas Brothers’ life on- and off-stage, including their parents and brother Frankie.

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group launches three new mobile websites offering quick access to content for kids, tweens, teens and parents:

  • Nickelodeon’s new mobile site features kids/tween-aimed games, polls, pictures, schedule information and so on, at
  • .  Coming soon to the new mobile site Nick, in partnership with MangoMobile, will develop additional games.  Beginning 2Q 2008, the mobile site will also feature additional mini-sites focusing on the network’s TV events, including SpongeBob SquarePants Pest of the West in April.

  • The N’s mobile site for teens is set to launch in early 2Q 2008 (  The new site will offer a mobile version of Rank and other games on, the daily N’Sider blog with reviews and news and activities based on the network’s content.
  • During 3Q 2008, parents will get their own mobile site, focusing on content from Nick’s ParentsConnect website, including daily parenting tips, activities and recommendations. The mobile site will also feature ParentsConnect’s
  • .

BBC Worldwide confirms global distribution rights for the new preschool animated series 3rd & Bird (52 episodes). Produced by Little Airplane Productions (The Wonder Pets), BBC Worldwide takes the TV and merchandise rights for the series, which is set to launch on CBeebies in fall 2008.

It’s A Big Big World will head out into the big world with the help of Contender Entertainment Group (CEG) following the company’s acquisition of the global distribution rights (excluding the US and Canada) for the environmentally-focused preschool series.  CEG will rep the show for international TV sales, home entertainment and merchandising.  It’s A Big Big World is produced by Wainscott Studios Kriegman with a 40-episode season 1 and a 15-episode season 2 currently in production for a fall debut, and 25 more episodes for fall 2009.

VizWoz, a new tween/teen-centric virtual community, launches in the UK today.  Aimed at tweens/teens 11-14, VizWoz is a subscription based service that is comprised of imaginary worlds that encourage users to use their creative freedom and features a range of game play (single and multiplayer), a 3D chat room, flash animation and so on through various technologies. VizWoz was founded by Daniel Laurence, who also created the UK sticker company School Stickers, as well as the UK school incentive/reward effort MyStickers.


Extending their relationship, the Sorpresa! Network and the Hamptons International Film Festival will continue with the Sorpresa! Youth Film Competition at the 16th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival, which will be held October 15 – 19, 2008.  For this year’s competition, Sorpresa! is looking for short films (3-5 minutes) created by kids and teens ages 17 and under that illustrate The World You Imagine through a Hispanic lens.

Beacon Media, a youth marketing agency, and JL360, a digital agency, have entered into a strategic alliance under which they plan to serve clients digital marketing needs through integrated programs.


DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. taps Alex Schwartz as Head of Development.  She takes over the position from Kristine Belson, who will produce DreamWorks’ upcoming feature film, Crood Awakening (working title).  Schwartz most recently served as Walden Media’s EVP overseeing the creative group, while herself producing and managing movies including holes, because of Winn-Dixie, among others.  Previously Schwartz toiled for Disney Studios’ Touchstone Pictures.

Entertainment Rights appoints Nick Phillips as its new CEO, per Variety.  Phillips, who was former Chairman and CEO Warner Music UK, takes over for Mike Heap who exited the company following nine years there.  There continue to be word of the company’s potential sale, but nothing official.

Continuing its reorganization efforts, Disney made a bunch of exec moves, all effective as of April.

  • Catherine Powell was named as SVP/Program Distribution, EMEA (North) to drive sales in the U.K. and Ireland, Germany, France, Nordic, Israel and Benelux, working with the company’s program sales heads and their teams in local markets. She was previously VP/Sales, U.K./Ireland, Nordic, Israel and Benelux for Disney-ABC International Television since 2004. She will continue to be based in London and report to Tom Toumazis, EVP and MD/Integrated business.
  • As the new SVP/Program Distribution, EMEA (South), Francesca Tauriello will take responsibility for Italy, Spain, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and the Middle East. She will remain based in Rome and report to Tom as well. She served previously as Disney-ABC International Television’s VP/Sales, Northern Mediterranean and Middle East.
  • Maria Kyriacou‘s new role as SVP/New Media Distribution, EMEA and Canada will entail managing new media sales and strategy within the integrated business, across channel and program distribution. Working with Catherine, Francesca and Simon Amselem, SVP/Channel Distribution, EMEA, she will be based in London, reporting to Tom. Maria is currently VP/Portfolio Development, EMEA.
  • Adam Tow has been named as VP/Business and Legal Affairs, EMEA and Canada, Integrated. He will work across all channel, program and new media distribution, reporting to Peter Wiley, SVP and European general counsel, The Walt Disney Company Ltd. Adam is VP/Business & Legal Affairs, Disney Channels EMEA.
  • Simon Taylor, Disney-ABC International Television’s current VP/Business and Legal Affairs since 2006, will now become VP/Business and Legal Affairs, Disney Channels EMEA.

Leslie Sepuka joins Common Sense Media, the media literacy and advocacy organization, as Director of Corporate Communications, next month.  Sepuka will be responsible for heading all press and communication efforts for the organization, as well as serving as a member of the senior management team.  Based out of the company’s San Francisco headquarters, Sepuka will report to CMO, Kellie Krug.  Sepuka joins Common Sense Media from BBC Worldwide.

Scholastic new hires and promotions:

  • Joanne Ruelos joins Scholastic as Sr. Editor/Licensed Publishing. She was most recently a Sr. Editor at McGraw Hill.
  • Chelsea Donaldson has signed on with Scholastic as Design Assistant/Trade Hardcover.  She had been with Jager Di Paola Kemp Design.
  • Simon Tepas is named as Backlist Sales Manager, which is part of Scholastic’s national account sales group.  He had been Coordinator in Scholastic special markets department.
  • Lillie Mear is upped to Designer, Trade Hardcover. She was previously Design Assistant.
