Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/21/08

Good morning, it’s Friday, March 21, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Despite all the pre-auction hype that Google was gunning for wireless spectrum, telcos AT&T and Verizon Wireless emerged as the big winners of the FCC’s license-mart, which raised a record $19.6 billion in proceeds. Verizon paid $4.7 billion for the C-block spectrum, giving it the space to launch a national wireless network the FCC says must be open to accommodate third-party applications. Of course, this was the caveat that Google wanted all along.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

MySpace launched a new version of its mobile web site accessible through web-enabled phones at http://m.myspace.com/ , allowing users to update profiles, receive messages, view photo albums and post comments on others’ pages. The social networker also announced a new deal with Sprint in the U.S., giving all its web-enabled users free access to the new MySpace Mobile site. Until now AT&T and Helio users had to pay a subscription fee to access MySpace Mobile. The MySpace/Sprint tie-up also gives Sprint users access to content from other Fox Interactive Media properties including FoxSports.com, IGN and Photobucket.

Online casting has begun for VH1‘s how-to dating series The Pick-Up Artist, slated to premiere in Q4. Guys can go to PickUpArtist2Casting.com to post a 1-minute rundown of why women will find them irresistible. One bachelor will be chosen online by VH1 users, but the show producers say they will be perusing the site regularly to look for other suitable fellas.

The NHL‘s free on-demand video service launches on Hulu.com today. Catch a full-length “game of the week,” a full-length classic match up or highlights and features on individual players or teams.

Apple is issuing iTunes store credits for TV show season pass subscribers who saw their seasons shorted because of the Writers Strike. Subscribers can chose between partial refunds or video credits, depending on the situation.

The second downloadable casual game Fashion Solitaire is now available on MyLifetime.com, asking players to match costumes with models. The $19.95 download is also for sale on gaming portals RealGames, Shockwave.com and BigFishGames.com.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

LoftCity.com launched as an online film studio and distribution house, providing a networking hub for filmmakers and a production management center for active productions. Filmmakers, editors and composers from remote locations can use the site’s production tools to collaborate on a project. LoftCity also offers to securely showcase finished films to production companies.

Provider of “social advertisements” SplashCast raised $4 million in Series A funding. The Portland, OR-based start-up creates video applications that deliver ads to leading social networking sites including MySpace and Facebook.

YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim launched an investment fund called Youniversity Ventures with Slide VP/Business Development Keith Rabois and Xoom Corp. co-founder Kevin Hartz, reports PE Hub.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

DirecTV successfully launched a new satellite providing it with the capability to offer up to 150 national HD channels and expand its delivery of local HD channels to more than 100 DMAs, representing 84% of U.S. TV households. If only Dish Network, still playing catch up on the HD front, could be so lucky. Its satellite fell short of its orbit last week, a mishap expected to reduce the bird’s lifespan. Dish has two additional satellite launches planned this year to help it make good on its 100 HD channel capacity goal.

If at first you don’t succeed … The FCC is calling for a do-over, scheduling a second net neutrality hearing after complaints emerged that Comcast rigged the first one by stocking the room with its employees. This one will take place on the West Coast at Stanford University on Thursday, April 17.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Members of Yahoo‘s newspaper online ad consortium, made up of 26 publishers and 138 web sites, will join the quradrantONE ad alliance formed last month between the New York Times Co., Tribune, Gannett and Hearst, effectively doubling the alliance’s size. The group will target national advertisers and reach over 20 major markets, representing an aggregate of over 70 million unique monthly users. Some the larger publishers in the Yahoo consortium include McClatchy Co., Belo Corp. and Media General.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

CraveOnline.com beefed up its sales team with a couple of Fox Interactive Media veterans. Derek Rudd joins as VP/Consumer Ad Sales and Varvara Althouse takes the role of West Coast Account Executive. Both report to current CraveOnline SVP/Sales David Cohn, formerly VP of Digital Media Sales for the WWE.

ContextWeb
announced the opening of a UK office and named Ross Caveille to oversee operations there as Country Manager.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Those of you who have recently updated your computers, cell phones or TVs may want to check out myboneyard.com to make good, socially conscious use of your old gear. The site asks you to enter in the basic information of your product, then it automatically calculates a salvage value for it and sends out a free shipping label, along with a Visa debit card for the few bucks it is worth. Meanwhile Denver-based PR firm October Strategies just launched the Screen2Green recycling initiative to encourage cable MSOs to help local consumers dispose of toxic old-school TVs properly. (The site is just a placeholder for now, but the firm is working on hosting its first recycling rally in mid-2008.)
