Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 1, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Fallout of a Theatrical Flop: Anyone even remotely wondering whether content is king is directed to DreamWorks Animation’s fourth-quarter results, announced this week. The studio posted a quarterly net loss of $82.7 million and an $87 million write-down on the film “Rise of the Guardians,” its biggest theatrical failure and its swan song with distributor Paramount. DreamWorks also reported $20 million in write-offs on projects in development. For 2012, the company reported a net loss of $36.4 million.
Layoffs and the shifting of upcoming release dates are already in the works as the company seeks to “meaningfully reduce our overall cost structure so that our business can perform at the best possible margins even when our output levels fluctuate,” CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told analysts. “This means that many valuable members of the DreamWorks Animation family will be leaving the company within the year.”
350 to be exact: that’s the number of staffers that DreamWorks expects to shed, all related to major adjustments to its release schedule. For instance: Much-touted Mr. Peabody & Sherman has been pushed to next year, and Me and My Shadow is off the books for 2014. “Guardians” has earned more than $300 million in worldwide box office, according to Rentrak, but it cost an estimated $250,000 million to make, and box-office is split between studio and theater owners. Its this pale performance that sealed the coffin on DreamWorks’ distribution pact with Paramount. The studio has 12 films set for release through 2016 with distributor Twentieth Century Fox.
Any silver linings come primarily from outside the U.S. DreamWorks plans to open three theme parks in Russia and one in China. It opened animation studios in India and China, and is planning several co-productions with the Chinese under the newly formed Oriental DreamWorks. The studio is also opening its content and distribution gates with a new deal to develop the first original children’s series for Netflix, based on the upcoming movie Turbo.
Meanwhile, in Disney-land, Walt Disney Pictures announced yesterday comedian Dane Cook will be voicing lead character Dusty, described as “a plane with high hopes,” in animated Cars spinoff Disney’s Planes, scheduled for release Aug. 9. Comedian Cook is best known for his appearances on Comedy Central and HBO specials, and his comic films.
UBM Tech’s Game Developers Conference surveyed 2,500 North American game developers about the state of the gaming industry. Here are some key results:
- Indies Are on the Rise: 53% of respondents identified themselves as “indie developers” and of those, 51% have been an indie developer for less than two years. Additionally, 46% work within companies of 10 people or fewer, only 24% worked with a publisher on their last game, and just 20% are doing so on their current projects.
- Smart Devices, PCs Dominate Development: 38% of developers released their most recent game for smart phones and tablets collectively, but 55% are making their current games there. More than half – 58% – plan to release their next games on these platforms. 34.6% of developers released their last games for PCs/Macs, 48% are developing their current games for the platform, and 49% planning their next games on PCs/Macs.
- Nintendo Wii at Bottom of Barrel Among Game Consoles: In terms of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the survey found Microsoft is at the top with 13.2% respondents currently developing for the Xbox 360 and close to 14% planning their next game on the 360. For the Sony PlayStation 3, 13% are releasing their current game for the console, and 12.4% their next game. Only 4.6% of developers are making a Nintendo Wii U game, and just 6.4% are making their next game for the console.
Programming Picks
Tax day? Bah humbug… After an initial bow in the U.K., animated series Henry Hugglemonster will make its U.S. debut on Disney Junior April 15. The series, based on a children’s book by Irish Children’s Laureate Niamh Sharkey, revolves a family of fun-loving monsters very much like yours and mine and features the guest voices of Geri Halliwell, Brenda Blethyn and more.
