Cynopsis: Kids!
03/18/11
Good morning. It’s Friday, March 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Rumors have been put to rest as Jennifer Lawrence (20), who earned a best actress Oscar nod for role in Winter’s Bone, has been cast as Katniss Everdeen (16) in the movie version of The Hunger Games, the first booking in author Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy (Scholastic). This has not put an end to the unending discussion/debate among Hunger Games fans as to who should play Katniss (just go online). Collins appears to be happy, saying Lawrence is “just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody perfect for the role.” The Lionsgate movie will be directed by Gary Ross and produced by Jacobson under her Color Force shingle, and is set for release on March 23, 2012. This summer Lawrence will star in X Men: First Class and The Beaver, followed later this year by a co-starring role in Like Crazy. OK, so, now we want to know who will play Peeta?
Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Rob Riggle and Betty White will all lend their voices to Universal and Illumination Entertainment‘s 3D CGI animated feature film adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Based on Dr. Seuss’ 1971 book, The Lorax, the movie is set for release on March 2, 2012, and is the third movie created by Illumination and Universal. DeVito will serve as the voice of the title character of the Lorax, while Ed Helms voice the mysterious Once-ler. Efron will lend his voice to Ted, the idealistic boy in search of the Lorax, and Swift will play Audrey, the girl of Ted’s dreams. Rob Riggle will play financial king O’Hare, and White has signed on to portray Ted’s wise Grammy Norma. Chris Renaud (Despicable Me) will direct the movie from a screenplay by Cinco Paul and Den Daurio (Despicable Me, Hop, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!). Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and Janet Healey (both producers on Despicable Me) are producers for Illumination alongside Audrey Geisel, who serves as executive producer. Kyle Balda (a key creative lead on Despicable Me) will co-direct the movie. Additionally, art director Eric Guillon (Despicable Me), and production designer Yarrow Cheney will work in those roles on Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Composer John Powell (who collaborated with Meledandri on Robots, Ice Age: The Meltdown, and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!) will compose music for the movie.
GKIDS ( www.gkids.com ) announces the English-language voice cast for the French family-targeted animated feature film Mia and the Migoo (92 minutes), from director Jacques-Remy Girerd. The cast will feature John DiMaggio, Whoopi Goldberg, Matthew Modine, Wallace Shawn, James Woods, and newcomers Amanda Misquez as Mia and Vincent Agnello as Aldrin. The movie revolves around the adventures of young Mia who goes up against profit-hungry developers, while the future of life on Earth hangs in the balance. The English-language version of the movie is produced by GKIDS, a distributor and a producer of the New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF), and Matthew Modine, and will make its premiere as part of the NYICFF on Friday, March 25 at the IFC Center in NYC. Mia and the Migoo will open nationally on Earth Day, April 22, in partnership with Earth Day Network.
Turner Broadcasting in Europe has ordered a second season of the animated series The Amazing World of Gumball, ahead of the launch of the series. Featuring a mix of 2D and 3D animation in a live-action setting, The Amazing Adventures of Gumball will make its worldwide premiere with a teaser episode on Cartoon Network UK on May 2, 2011, with the full series debuting in the UK and other countries in Q4. Cartoon Network US will debut the full series beginning May 9, 2011, as part of its Monday evening comedy block. A Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe commission, the second season is comprised of 40×11 episodes (for a total of 80×11). The series will air on Cartoon Network in 166+ countries worldwide. The series is produced in London and animated at Boulder Media in Ireland, featuring 3D elements from Germany’s Studio Soi. Production on the second season of The Amazing World of Gumball is set to begin in June 2011.
Canada’s Teletoon will premiere the special two-part Star Wars: The Clone Wars season finale, in which Chewbacca makes his animated TV series debut, this month. Part one of the finale will bow on Friday, March 5 at 8:30p, preceded by a mini-marathon of the three most recent episodes of from 7p. Part two gets its premiere the following Friday, April 1 at 8:30p, following an encore of part one at 8p. Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars movie trilogy, helped recreate Chewie’s Wookiee growl for the series. The four episodes featured in the March 25 marathon will be available on-demand at www.teletoon.com on Monday, March 28.
A new Nickelodeon Home Entertainment DVD, Nickelodeon Favorites: Food with Friends, features characters from Nickelodeon’s preschool series, including Dora the Explorer, Go, Diego, Go!, The Wonder Pets!, Blues Clues, Yo Gabba Gabba!, and Ni Hao, Kai-lan, learning about all different types of food.
