Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/18/11

Good morning, it’s Friday, March 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Apple‘s new iTunes subscription program has its first big publisher – The New York Times. Beginning March 28 (the services are already available in Canada), the paper will charge $15/month for unlimited access to the site from a PC or a mobile app, $20/mo. to access it on a tablet and $35/mo. for access on any device. (Apple gets to keep 30% of the proceeds.) The plan also gives free access to all platforms for subscribers who get the print version of the Times delivered. Non-subscribers will be limited to reading 20 articles a month before hitting the paywall.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Major music label-backed Vevo is preparing to expand to the U.K. within the next few weeks, according to a Guardian report. Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff told the audience of the Abu Dhabi Media Summit that the company is planning to launch in the U.K. “imminently.” Caraeff also said that Vevo would become available in the Middle East and North Africa in the coming months, followed by Brazil, Australia and additional European launches.

VOD/digital network Exercise TV has added a selection of its video workouts to the iTunes store for the first time, for download to mobile phones, media players, iPads, laptops and Apple TV set tops. Over 30 titles are now available, starting at $1.99 for purchase or $.99 for rentals through Apple TV.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

New online video site Zediva, (which has already closed to new registrants) launched this week with a clever but legally questionable business model. As DVDs become available for retail (ie: before Redbox or Netflix gets a hold of them), the company will buy them and play them in a DVD player for virtual rental over the internet. Users have full access to DVD controls to play, pause, rewind and fast-forward as if the player was sitting in their own living room. Movies cost $1.99 each or 10 for $10. DVDs and the additional content they ship with will be available for 14 days from the day of purchase.

Chicago-based daily deal site Groupon is considering an IPO valuing the company at as much as $25 billion, per Bloomberg. The company, which now counts more than 70 million users across 500 markets, turned down a buy out offer from Google last Dec. for $6 billion.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Retail giants Wal-Mart and Target are lining up to put pressure on Amazon to begin collecting state sales taxes, according to a WSJ report. The campaign involves hiring lobbyists and reaching out to local Amazon affiliates. The web retailer has spent lavishly on legal fees and acted aggressively to avoid having to charge customers state sales taxes in states in doesn’t maintain a presence in.

In the wake of its $315 million merger with AOL, The Newspaper Guild is asking the team of unpaid writers who have contributed to the Huffington Post over the years to refrain from making any more contributions to the AOL-owned site to support “fair and equitable compensation” for journalists. Meanwhile freelance members of the California Media Workers Guild have launched a Facebook page entitled Hey Arianna, Can You Spare a Dime?

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Online media has officially passed print as the dominant source for news, according to the annual State of the Media report from the Pew Research Center, growing by 17% in terms of audience last year. Newspaper newsrooms have been cut to ribbons because of the decline, and are now 30% smaller than they were in 2000, according to Pew. As the migration to the web gathered speed in 2010, every other platform declined, including a precipitous decline of 13.7% in the cable news genre (the first time in at least 12 years the median cable news audience has declined.) Online ad revenue in 2010 is also projected to surpass print newspaper ad revenue for the first time. Revenue actually bounded back for every medium except newspapers last year, led by the Local TV space, which increased revenue by 17%.

Sometimes winning an award at a film festival isn’t enough exposure to score a distribution deal in the competitive world of independent film. Promotional video technology platform AnyClip has teamed with SXSW to allow this year’s winning films including Tristan Patterson’s much praised documentary “DragonSlayer” to be tagged and added to AnyClip’s online library of content – giving filmmakers the opportunity to promote, distribute and monetize individual scenes in their films. Clips can be embedded on any blog, fan site or social networking page and AnyClip is working to line up third party sites such as IMDB to give the clips increased exposure. AnyClip announced its first clip licensing deal with a major studio earlier this month – Universal Pictures – to index and distribute scenes from library and recent releases including “Back To The Future” and “Despicable Me.”
