Cynopsis
3/16/07
Good morning, it’s Friday, March 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. And for all of you participating in the late night “test2” email sent to Orlando, congratulations! you’ve all passed. More on that below.
If your a college basketball ball fan, and who isn’t during March Madness?, and you are one of the many still waiting in line to get on the CBS Sportline March Madness on Demand streaming video site of the games – then there’s good news for you. CBS will be offering game highlights and extra video produced by CBS Sports, CSTV and CBS Sportsline on a new Channel on YouTube – appropriately named CBS Sports NCAA Tournament Channel. Sort of an interesting move given the Viacom $1 billion lawsuit against YouTube, but nonetheless. Here’s the link – www.youtube.com/cbsncaatourney. As for the CBS Sportline streaming video site – at 4p yesterday some 800,000 people had registered and at the tip off of the Maryland vs. Davidson game, there were 189,000 waiting to get the game live.
Tonight’s Finale:
NBC: 1 vs. 100 at 8p
Tonight’s Premiere:
A&E: Intervention at 10p
(Source details and qualifications below)
~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
The season finale of Oxygen’s The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency on Tuesday night (1030p) brought in a 0.7 rating among W18-34 and a 0.5 rating with W18-49.
Bravo will air encore episodes of NBC’s Friday Night Lights each Friday and Saturday night the rest of this month and into April leading up to the show’s finale on NBC April 11 at 8p. Telemundo will offer full-length primetime on demand programming available over U.S. wireless networks for the first time. The Spanish-language network picked up this chance as part of a large deal between its NBC Universal parent’s Digital Distribution division and MobiTV. The global mobile and broadband TV and music services company’s subscribers will gain unlimited access to content on five new ad-supported channels from NBC Universal beginning in 2nd qtr this year, including some of Telemundo’s novela, daytime, sports and news programs.
Comedy Central has paid a fee of approx $10 million for cable rights to Borat (a shared deal with USA), Reno 911!: Miami, and Team America: World Police, from Twentieth Century Fox. Per Variety, the deal for Borat begins in 2010, extends for five years, and the film will ping-pong between Comedy Central and USA during that time for multiple runs. Reno 911! arrives to Comedy Central in 2009, immediately after is pay TV run on HBO. Team America comes to Comedy Central this June and has an exclusive four year deal with the network.

Showtime has a new project in development on an original idea from Steven Spielberg called The United States of Tara, a half hour comedy from DreamWorks Television, reports Variety. The story is about a mother of two teenagers who is has a touch of Sybil in her – that is multiple personalities, and how her children and husband go about their daily lives dealing with multiple versions of mom. The pilot will be scripted by Diablo Cody. No word yet on what Spielberg’s credit will be.
So you got the test2 last night (or perhaps you’re just seeing it this morning), and many of you had a great sense of humor about it, most were confused, and only a few unsubscribed. Here’s the scoop – Cynopsis was moved to a new server yesterday (faster website/no more crashing under heavy traffic). There were some real problems in being able to send emails thru the new server, problems that lingered well into last night. Our buddy Orlando at Rackspace Managed Hosting who oversees our server, was on it all day, and in an effort to make sure all went well for this morning’s email blast, he sent out a test message. That’s something he’s never done before, which explains why he mistakenly put his own name in to To: line and sent it to all our thousands of subscribers. A minor infraction given the bigger picture – you’re reading this this morning! Phew. Close one!
And all that bru-ha-ha was in preparation for Monday, our big day. It marks the launch of our new daily edition – Cyn opsis: Digital. This edition will focus on the business of digital and broadband as it relates to the television industry. And we’ll have it for you as an email (naturally), as well as a daily early morning podcast (also naturally), voiced by our own David Lawrence (also the voice behind the CynKids daily podcast). This new daily will be written by Wayne Karrfalt, Editor of Cyn opsis: Digital , who can be reached at [email protected]. If you’d like to know a little more about him and the edition, you can click here to go straight to the Digital page on our website.
