Good Morning. It’s Friday, March 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. At the McGraw-Hill Media Summit yesterday in New York, Leslie Moonves, CBS’ President/CEO indicated the company was ready to make some large transactions and said “we’re in a very good position financially to do some things.” CBS, according to Moonves is eyeing content companies, broadcast networks and new media properties, and specifically said The Weather Channel could be a focus if the price was right. However, Moonves said CBS would not be pursuing Facebook if the asking price was in the $15 billion range. Tonight’s Premieres: Saturday’s Premiere: Sunday’s Premieres: AMC: Television’s Best Story

Television’s Best Story “AMC is poised to wrest the gold standard Mad Men | Returns Summer 2008 ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
ABC ordered a pilot from Rob Thomas for Cupid, a revamped version of his short-lived 1998 ABC comedy series of the same name about a man who thinks he’s been sent by Zeus to unite 100 romantically-challenged couples. The project is from ABC Studios and Sony Pictures TV. This is the second project picked up this week for Rob Thomas, the other being the new Beverly Hills, 90210 for The CW. Paris Hilton returns to reality TV as MTV ordered a 10-episode series for fourth quarter called Paris Hilton’s My New BFF (wt). In the series, Paris will search for a new best friend among twenty wannabes who will live together in a house to compete for her attention with the winner getting the chance to go to parties and business functions with her. Produced by independent production company Ish Entertainment, the series will be paired with an online voting site ParisBFF.com which launched this week. Production is set to start in Los Angeles this spring. The CW handed an eight-episode order to 13, a nonscripted horror-themed series from Sam Raimi and Jay Bienstock, who will both executive produce along with Robert Tapert, Raimi’s Ghost House Productions partner, says Variety. Casting is currently happening to find the show’s thirteen contestants. NBC is reportedly looking at a pilot project starring Christian Slater in what would be his first television series, reports THR. From Universal Media Studios and writer/producer Jason Smilovic, the story revolves a perfectly normal, middle class husband and father, who realizes he is also an international spy. Ken Burns will continue developing documentaries for PBS through 2017. The Corporation For Public Broadcasting (CPB) made a ten year deal to fund projects which include an update of his Baseball series, one on prohibition, biographies of two Roosevelt presidents and another on the Vietnam war. CPB also granted funds for three documentaries from Harvard professor and African American studies expert Henry Louis “Skip” Gates Jr., The Faces of America premiering in 2010; Searching for Our Roots: The History of the African American People slated for 2011; and African American Lives III: Reclaiming Our Past for 2012. Twentieth Century Fox made a two-year deal with Rob McElhenny, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, the creators of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The deal includes a comedy pilot called Boldly Going Nowhere to be shot this fall. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: AOL bought its way into the social networking revolution, acquiring UK-based Bebo for $850 million in cash. Current President Johanna Shields will remain at the helm of Bebo, known in the entertainment world as the home of interactive web drama Kate Modern, currently in its second season. Time Warner sees the deal as a chance to combine AOL’s industry-leading AIM platform with Bebo’s content and younger-skewing 22 million unique user base to create a more compelling play for advertisers. (Like widgets, instant messaging has yet to generate much ad revenue thus far.) The deal comes just one week after AOL’s launch of Open AIM 2.0 initiative and the announcement by Apple of a downloadable AIM application for the iPhone. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The kids’ TV ad sales upfront season got under way yesterday morning as the Nickelodeon & MTVN Kids and Family Group held its annual presentation at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. Nickelodeon’s upfront focused on the business and brand’s ability to be “virtually everywhere kids are,” across all media platforms, products and its newer ventures into music, with new partner Sony/BMG Music Entertainment, and hotels, cruises and a new theme park. In addition to showcasing its new and returning series, specials and projects, the network also recognized and welcomed its early audience, who grew up in Nick’s kids only or them vs. us era, who now have families of their own. Nickelodeon also introduced the new incarnation of Big Help, its pro-social initiative that is now more focused on the green effort. Feeling strongly about the upfront season again this year, the network says it has had early interest from non-traditional kid advertisers including the auto industry, retail and those reaching for demos (kids, young adults, parents) independently as well as the family as a whole. Full edition: CYN KIDS. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: It’s official. Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) has made an offer to acquire all issued shares of the Netherlands’ 2waytraffic. The initial cash offer is for 114.3 million pounds and at this point 2waytraffic’s Board has recommended that shareholders accept SPE’s offer. The deal, of course, is subject to shareholder acceptance and regulatory approval. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL. ~ RATINGS ~
